Only Columbus Would Dare This Citywalk

Update: Downgrading 1 star. So Ive been there twice since. Sat outside once, inside once. I was surprised with how dirty things are. The inside needs a cleaning. The inside is very small, the line gets long at times (out the door). Please relocate the online order rack to a different area for both general customer convenience and safety. There is 1 egress, and there is alot bottlenecked by the door (self-serve water, area where customers take the used tins after eating, a rack for online orders, and a line of people). The downgrade though is the cleanliness which was not acceptable in my view. If the patron area looks like that, the backrooms look like what. Original: Small place with around 16 seats, really smokey inside. Energetic loud little deli with delicious sandwiches and sides, but on the pricey side. I got tuna sandwich with a pea pesto salad and edemame slaw salad sides. Fellow diner got a 1/2 sandwich - I think thr pick 2 deal where you get half sandwich and a side. The sides were very good and fresh - slaw tastes of smokey sesame oil and fresh red onion. The pesto salad was a pesto pasta salad and was pretty good. My tuna sandwich was much better than most sandwich shops in the immediate vicinity such as katzinger. They load it up with tuna salad (if anything too much, but thats a personal preference really) and a good amount of other fixings that make it taste fresh, give it some texture and its not greasy. Ill be back for sure. I think Id rather get a sando and go to the park, personally, as it was cramped and smokey, but it wasnt bad or anything just not my jams inside.

Oh Brown Bag….like a spurned lover I always return to you only to be disappointed. This place has so much going for it: great location, cute shop, and a decent variety of tasty sandwiches. But the timing and execution of the food is always lackluster. I don’t typically like to place online orders, but when ordering from here I always do since I do not have 40 minutes to an hour on a weekday to wait for one sandwich (which I have found is the average wait time if you place your order in person). While they are undoubtedly tasty when made properly and the quality of ingredients is good, the sandwiches are never consistent and almost always have some sort of issue. My last club sandwich was so burnt I couldn’t finish it, and my “Molly’s favorite” from today was so wet and greasy that the bottom piece of bread disintegrated before I could get home to eat it , and the grease soaked completely through the wrapper and bag. I want so badly to continue supporting this place, as they seem like good people and I know it is a difficult time for small businesses everywhere. But until they get some crisper pickles, implement better quality control, and figure out how to accommodate a lunch rush I’m not sure I can continue spending money here.

First and last time ordering here. My docs had a retreat scheduled for 12pm and wanted Brown Bag. The online ordering for delivery does not open up until 11a so I waited until 11a exactly to order. My order was officially placed at about 11:10a. Since I had a big order I put in the comments of every item names and to please label so that I know what is whos. Since I do not work there, have never worked there and have never even ordered from them, I did not know that each comment would print out on the ticket/receipt. That was MY fault and ultimately I apologized for that because this made them extremely upset and it showed. My order was supposed to be delivered by 11:56a so I called them at about 11:57a when the order wasn't delivered just to get an ETA since the retreat started at 12p. They stated that the food hasn't left the building yet. The delivery guy got there and the food wasn't ready so he left and they were not sure when they would be able to deliver it. Since the retreat started at noon I asked them if I came and got it if they would refund the delivery fee along with my tip because my tip calculation included the delivery. The lady on the phone then says "Oh, so you don't want to leave a tip?" I answered "No, not as much as I originally left because" and before I could finish my sentence the lady hung up on me. If she had waited, I would have finished to say "because that included it being delivered and I'd like to use cash now"... I get there to get my order. Not only was the lady I spoke to on the phone rude, but another lady was also rude. I asked them if I could get an updated receipt showing that the delivery fee and the tip was refunded and that made both of these women even MORE angry. I literally had 2 grown women literally YELLING at me in a busy restaurant full of people. They refused to give me an updated receipt showing these were refunded and told me that they would email it to me by 3 today. I asked them if they would at least write on the receipt they were giving me that I will be refunded these 2 fees and they refused to do that also. This entire time these 2 women were YELLING. They handed me my food, the women practically threw the receipt in the bag when I told her that I wanted it and then told me to get my own drinks and chips. And that was that.... Absolute HORRIBLE customer service and extremely unprofessional. I will share my experience with my entire building and will advise against ever ordering from...

We live in German Village and this place was a regular spot. We've recommended a lot of people to it at work (NCH) or visitors from out of town. However recently we noticed the quality has gone down yet the prices have gone up.

I was overlooking the decrease in quality yet increase in prices because it is in our neighborhood. However, this morning my family and I were walking around the neighborhood and I felt like I needed some sugar/carbs. It was around Schiller Park so we stopped by Brown Bag just to see if we could buy a cookie. I waited with the kids and my wife looked on the windows and door and didn't see any times listed or a closed/open sign. I knew we were a little early for opening, it was around 10:30am. There were a few people inside though so she tried the door and it was open. I thought oh great, maybe they just opened.

But immediately upon opening this women very rudely said "I'm sorry we're closed." from behind the counter. My wife asked if we could just by a cookie and she cut her off and repeated "I'm sorry, we're closed." It felt so rude and we felt so slighted. Especially as a favorite neighborhood spot. I don't know if this woman just works there or if she is the owner, but regardless taking the rudeness, drop in quality, and price increase into account, we won't be going to Brown Bag anymore. Honestly, with the rudeness alone we won't be going there anymore.

We walked away thinking that there were so many different ways she could have handled that. "I'm sorry we left the door open, we actually aren't open yet, but sure you can buy a cookie." or "Oh I'm sorry we aren't open yet and we can't sell you a cookie because it's illegal when we're not open" (I don't know if that's true but whatever) or "here is a cookie on the house" and then lock the door so that now one else goes in thinking the place is open.

I have to say, if you are in the Village go to Pistacio Vera, Lindy's, or Staufs instead. The people who work there are amazingly nice and there is more than one occasion were they went out of their way to make our family's time at their place enjoyable.

If you're up for a little more of a walk try Kolache Republic. The owners are so nice and the...

I have never been treated so rudely as I was at the Brown Bag Deli today. At check out, I realized they charged my card $90 for my sandwich. When I told them about the mistake, they wanted to give me the difference out of the cash in their drawer. I wanted my card credited. Language barrier with the male owner, so the female owner took over. They wanted me to write down my credit card # so they could work with my bank to revoke the charges. They couldn't understand why I had a problem with my credit card number being written down on a loose piece of paper. I waited for 15 minutes while they tried to reach the bank to eliminate the charge. They weren't able to get resolved and I had to get back to work; I relented and gave them the number. The owner said they would contact me when it was resolved. About an hour later I received a call that the charge was reversed. However, she then asked for my expiration date because they wanted to charge me for my sandwich. I already had a receipt for the purchase of the sandwich and they claimed that the bank had revoked the charge. I said that I was surprised with everything that had happened that they were going to charge me. The owner starting yelling at me, asking why I expected to get the sandwich for free and that they "don't work for nothing". She continued to berate me over the phone, and ended with saying that she would give me the sandwich for free but that I should never step foot in their deli again. Seriously???? They erroneously charge me $90 for a sandwich (thank God I caught it!), had to give my credit card # to them and God knows where the piece of paper is now, and had to wait an hour to get it resolved....and they banned me because I suggested in spirit of good customer service that they should comp my sandwich. No problem....will never step foot in their establishment again. And I've spread the word to everyone I work with and will continue to do so as much as possible. If I could give 0 stars, I would. Food may be good, but...
