Walking in: Actual aesthetic of the place is nice, appeared tidy. No foul or musty smells upon entrance.
Greeting: We were greeted in a rushed overwhelmed manner, as if no one knew what was actually going on..my husband and I also noticed no continuity in their attire (staff had on miss matched street clothes, jeans tee-shirts of all colors & designs). This should have been an indication of things to come. The person that was walking us into the open dinning room (left room adjacent to hostess stand) told us to "Go ahead and sit anywhere"..we choose a booth and once we sat down for about 3 min or so a older man wearing a chin diaper (aka mask down your chin instead of around your nose & mouth)..exclaimed "why you sit over here" I said "we were told to sit anywhere" he barked back "ohh okay ok whatever, get up let me clean it"..so he pulled a rag from his apron and wiped off the table (same rag that has most likely been everywhere prior to our arrival because we watched it go everywhere during our experience). After "cleaning" our table we sat down (I wanted to leave then because my gut said run but my husband wanted to try them out).
The approach: We sat for about 7 mins until someone walked over..this polite woman in bubblegum pink 90s full house attire comes over and says "do you know what you want" we replied "this is our first time here so we don't know yet"..she returned with menus.. We agreed on egg rolls, dumplings, duck, BBQ pork ribs..just to sample somethings. We asked for the items to come out all together but they didn't.. He asked for a Sapporo beer (he got it within 5 mins of asking) and I asked for Asian pear martini (which took 20 mins to arrive despite the restaurant only being 25-30% full).
The Food & Drinks: Whewww hunnay!! This was actually sad..my husband and I sat in disbelief at what they are serving people. The egg rolls were very old tasting as if they had been reheated several times (imagine 2-3×). The BBQ pork was several days old, very tough chewy mealy texture (imagine beef jerky texture slathered in BBQ sauce..it was inedible, unattractive, & unappetizing). The duck was abhorrent..from the poor presentation, the off smell, to the God awful old tasting meat..it was an epic failure (the duck was actually missing the breast and they substituted it for cilantro as seen in the picture). The duck looked like one of the abandoned homes you see on road trips along the deep south..with trees growing up through the floor boards and portions of the roof and floors caved in. The duck was a disaster, just the way they desecrated its body was enough to make me think about going back to being a vegan..
The older gentleman came over and said "ohh you must not like the food because you barely ate anything"..we kindly & politely explained that this wasn't good and we hoped it was just a bad day (trying to be nice)..he scoffed "everyone like our food, this real authentic Chinese szechuan food".. (More like Poopinese food..because we know good Asian food and this just isnt it). Their pompous attitude was actually the most off putting secondary to the duck...
Overall: We left hungry, unhappy, & weirded out by the experience....maybe they have issues with quality control..or maybe they are overusing the microwaves we spotted in the kitchen.......which explains alot! Either way they need alot of work.
We absolutely love Asian food but this is a disgrace to their culture and poor representation of their otherwise fabulous food.
10/10 WOULD NOT RECCOMEND at all
Resolve: We ditched the idea of taking the doggy bags they offered us..why take the crud they served us (was going to use as bait for fishing but my hubby said it would not fair to the fish)..and so...we instead, happily drove the distance to 5 spice Asian Street Market (never disappointed there, consistent good food try them..the duck & their roast...
Read moreUsed to visit this restaurant before COVID a lot. This was my first time back in a couple of years. Sad to see the deterioration. It's a beautiful building and atmosphere to dine and the service is good and everyone is friendly. But, that's about the only thing that has not changed. It goes downhill from there.
I sympathize with the challenges of COVID and how difficult it is to even survive right now in the restaurant biz. But, the answer is not to dumb everything down and go "cheap" and "low end" on all the food and then raise your prices. Most people will pay a premium for quality. The alternative is to simply not dine out at all.
The food was awful. I've bought better sauce in the supermarket. I wound up in the bathroom the rest of the night disposing of it in multiple dumps when I got home. Many of the dishes and appetizers that I used to order are unavailable and off the menu and when I asked to customize the order by steaming the vegetables and adding the sauce on the side, I was told there were no such options anymore.
This leads me to believe that nothing is cooked to order and they just pre-cook a volume of low end food, much like they would have a large tub of soup in the kitchen and the servers just scoop up a bowl, as needed, which is fine with soup. But, not your main course meal.
As for the portions, my main course of large shrimp with vegetables was $19.95 and about the portion size of an appetizer. Add an iced tea, tip and tax for $30.00 for an appetizer, basically, and a drink. I'm not complaining about the cost, but, the value and the food was awful!
As for the end of the meal, I could not believe I was in a middle to a high end Chinese restaurant and I was handed the bill without a fortune cookie! I asked where my fortune cookie was and I was told that they no longer offer fortune cookies. NO FORTUNE COOKIES IN A CHINESE RESTAURANT?
A complete unfulfilling waste of money. Charge more money, if you have to, but, don't provide an inferior product and charge so much for it.
What I received was the equivalent of an appetizer, not a main course, of low end food quality drowned in horrible sauce. Something worth about $10 from a low end bottom grade restaurant or low end take out.
I gave it a 2, but, that was mostly because the service was quick and the staff was nice and I didn't have the heart to complain.
Not much they could have done to fix it if you now offer low end quality food, small portions and you no longer have a lot of things you used to have on the menu and you can't customize by asking someone to put the sauce on the side.
Very very...
Read moreGrowing up in a City had an ample size Chinatown, we consider ourselves to be somewhat of Chinese food officinados. That being said we were very happy to see this Szechuan style restaurant open up in Coral Springs. Our first 4 dining experiences there were excellent both in service as well as their food. Their decor is probably the nicest as far as S. Florida Chinese restaurants are concerned. However, the reason for only giving them 1 star is that our last 3 consecutive visits have been less than satisfactory. Last week we called to make a reservation for six people. The man that answered the phone told us that he was the Manager. I orderded the the Peking Duck from him giving them more than the 24 hours notice that they need to prepare it. When we arrived for our meal not only did they say that they had no reservation for us but that they were out of Peking Duck as well. We were all very disappointed but decided to stay for dinner anyways. They didn't seem very apologetic or caring whether we stayed or not. Yesterday, I called in and spoke with the same gentleman who still maintains that he is the Manager and ordered the Family style Won Ton soup with noodle. He said to give him 20 minutes to get it prepared. I got tied up and arrived there in 30 minutes later. The soup still wasn't ready. After another 10 minutes I asked the Manager how my soup was comming along and he said that he would go back to the kitchen to get it himself. When I got home and and sat down with my wife to eat the soup we could see that it was packaged very well. The won ton, pork and noodles were packaged in a container and the soup broth was by itself in seperate containers for us to mix together. It was very apparant by both of us to see that the broth was almost as clear as water. We tasted the broth before adding the other ingrediants and much to our horror the broth tasted as bad as it looked. It obviously wasn't cooked yet or ready to serve. My wife called back the Manager and told him about it and his response was "that is how their soup is made" and that they don't refund any money. My wife said that she was not looking for a refund but perhaps the broth wasn't fully cooked yet and that might have been the reason for our long wait. She asked if we could bring back the broth and have it exchanged for another. They weren't very accommodating and my wife is non confrontational so my wife said "good bye" I called up Red Ginger and ordered a delicious soup from them. I will never return to the Mainland Bistro. I get the feeling that their preference is to...
