The reviews on this place are amazing. It offers a beautiful atmosphere and very fresh food. That being said.....
On Christmas Day my family has a tradition of wearing PJs all day and ordering Chinese. We chose this restaurant based on the wonderful reviews, so we ordered and I happily went in to pick up our Christmas dinner in my pajamas.
The restaurant was packed, standing room only. I didn't know where to go for my carry out, so I kept walking until I hit the end of the bar. A very friendly server let me know Carry out was located in the back. So off I went and found the carry out section in the back. The cashier was very friendly and even gave me a great pair of chopsticks for Christmas. Our food was ready to go and nice and hot.
We get home and dive into our meal. Now I ordered an egg roll along with the beef and broccoli with fried rice. My chosen heat level, based on reviews, was a 3.
I started with my pork egg roll and found it disappointing. It was soggy, bland and inedible.
Then I opened the fried rice and dishes it out. Fried rice??? It ended up being dried out brown rice with what I assume to be lumps of mashed potatoes. Ok then, moving on.
Upon opening the beef and broccoli, I found it nice and hot with plenty of brown sauce. It contained water chestnuts and a plethora of other vegetables. Oh yes!!! It also contained 2 whole pieces of broccoli. Hmmm....... It did have plenty of beef, so I dove right in.
Now level 3 heat isn't really supposed to be hot, based on reviews of course. However, upon the first bite entering my mouth..... The reviews lied!!
My tongue quickly felt the heat of spice and my lips shortly became chapped. I couldn't distinguish any other factor, no flavor at all. Just spicy heat.
My husband's naked chicken dish with fried rice and egg roll were exactly the same. A soggy lump of an egg roll and spicy hot, level 3, chicken with dried up brown rice.
Now based on how popular this restaurant is and how fresh the vegetables and meat were, I'm thinking this wasn't a normal experience with their food.
A lot of Chinese restaurants are packed on Christmas Day, so I do understand if the food isn't at its absolute best. They have to crank out an unimaginable amount of food every year on this one day. That being said, I do think if they had slowed down just a little our food may have been what we expected.
So I'm still in search of the best Chinese food...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOkay so the first time I had this place It was on a whim. I was working at one of our satellite campuses and they popped up for noodles on doordash. I got chicken lo mein, the dasher couldn't find the building ended up arriving late and the noodles were still scalding hot. I quickly shoveled 3 bites in before having to return to work. Immediately I thought wow this place is delicious. Then this past year I stopped by the booth at cincy Asian food fest and was sad they didn't have lo mein, but my 6 year old won a tshirt and the owner was sweet and let our 4 year old pick out a prize too. So fast forward to my birthday this past weekend and my partner and I found ourselves leaving a show and craving Chinese food. I looked up Chinese near me, and was thrilled to see kungfood pop up and that they were open. It was close to closing time so we rushed over the river. We were seated immediately, service was quick and personal. The atmosphere was very cute and we both commented on how much we loved the hand painted kung fu characters on the chairs. We got hot sake, a first for us both and it was surprisingly drinkable. Then we each got an egg roll the big Bertha for me and the spicy dragon one for him, and an order of the good pot stickers. The egg rolls are huge and served with plenty of sweet and sour. The dumplings are also giant, the stuffing is tender, perfectly wok fried and the dip?!? THE DIP I would pay top dollar for any day. So flavorful, has a little kick but I was spooning it into my dumplings and egg roll like crazy. I once again got the chicken lo mein which is a hearty serving and the best lo mein I've had anywhere. I ate the leftovers the next day and still want more. And my partner ordered the generals chicken at a spice level 10. Which the waitress/presumed co-owner graciously warned him would be Extra spicy (habanero chili flakes and ghost pepper I believe) he being a spicy food conisseur ordered it anyways. The burn was real but he also was left thinking how freaking good the flavor was itself. And so naturally we are ordering more today, albeit slightly less spicy for him š . 100/10 excellent service, very laid back and eclectic atmosphere, and the food is phenomenal, leaving you want more and more....
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWhat can we say. We were all excited about experiencing a new restaurant. It was my birthday celebration and what could go wrong. Everything!!!! So there were just two of us. We sat at the window bar where you could seat yourself, and we were greeted by a nice server named Alyssa. She was great until she wasn't. We ordered an appetizer as well as our food. We received our appetizers fairly quickly.
There was a table of seven that was seated after us, and they were served their appetizers and food before we received our food for two. We asked our server where our food was, and she advised that it should have been out already. She never came back to our area. Instead, she provided the table of seven of their food, and not once did she come back to give an explanation on why our food was delayed.
So we we opted to leave so we can actually eat. We patiently waited on Alyssa to come back so we could pay for our appetizers, and then she came back with our food. We explained that we do not wish to have the food we would like to pay for what we ate and leave. Alyssa then said but" it's not my fault. I was nice to you, people." With that being it would have been nice to know why were didn't have our food to begin with. So then she went to a overbearing bully of "management" to tell us that the ticket ran out and that's why we didn't get our food.
The manager then tried to make it seem as if we wanted to skip on the check. I explained to her that I wanted to pay for what we ate but I was not going to pay for food we did not receive. After trying to guilt trip, make up excuses and call us broke, she told us just to go. I refused to pay with my card because I did not trust that she would charge for only what we received. I wish our server would have just explained the reason we were not receiving our food before the party of 7 that came after us. Instead they made a point to make us feel as if we were trying to get over on them. Privilege at is finest constantly...
