They illegally charged the tip on our check twice without mentioning it. The first time happened on a weekend when we got a check with the tip included. At that moment we asked the waitress why and she said it was a new practice. We were skeptical but we accepted it. Next weekend we visited the restaurant again and I personally asked three people if the tip was charged to their checks. All of them said no, their bills didn’t include the tip. We sat on a table and ordered food. At the end we got again the check with the tip included. As soon as we got the check I saw a couple leaving their check on the table and I asked them about their check. They showed me their bill and the tip was not included. I got very angry at that moment for two reasons. First, they were imposing the tip on the check only to us. And second, I realized that the waitress lied to us the first time by saying they were imposing the tip to everyone. We talked to the manager and he said that sometimes they do that but they always ask the client beforehand. But they did not ask anything to us any of the two times they imposed us the tip on the check. My husband sent an email about this situation to the customer service of the restaurant. We received a reply from the owner Leonardo Spencer where he apologized for the incident and offer us a $50 gift card to give the business another chance. We were grateful and we accepted it. However, he went further and replied to my husband’s review here on Maps. His reply looks more like a justification for tips’ impositions than an apology for illegally charging tips on clients’ checks. He asks us for “understanding” that the “etiquette” is to leave a tip of “20%”. But Tips are not etiquette, they are a voluntary donation for a service. The percentage of tips is only a reference but by no means is an etiquette, obligation or something that should be included on the check. The same owner is asking his clients to “behave” and have the “etiquette” to leave 20% as tip. I invite him to have the business “etiquette” to pay a fair salary to his servers. The 20% should be paid by his business. Clients are not responsible for his business costs. Servers are his labor, not ours. If he should rise prices to pay a fair salary he should do it and “the invisible hand” will decide for his business. But that money should not be by any means translated into a “costumer etiquette”. The only etiquette of business is to pay the agreed price for a service, and that price is agreed on the menu. Tips are not (legally or morally) an agreed price. If you want to be obligated to pay an etiquette of 20% then go to this place, if not then you should avoid it. Even if we receive the $50 gift card we are not coming back. We don’t want to feel obligated (morally or legally) to leave 20% of our check so restaurant owners can continue to evade servers costs by imposing them on clients. For the record, I want to mention that we have always left at least 15% which is the percentage we consider is fair for the service we receive. But evidently they didn’t like our 15%, they consider it “the European way of round up the spare change”. Customers, don’t forget that we are not obligated to leave anything, not even the 10%. It is illegal in the state of Texas to charge the tip on the check without customer consent. And don’t get manipulated by the classic excuse of “serves make few money”, their low salary is not our fault or responsibility, the restaurant industry is the only...
Read moreWe visited here for the first time based upon the google reviews and was super excited. We ordered the Parrillada Tizon and Bistec Pepito Torta.
Pros: Black bean soup is very tasty and free! Great patio and service was pretty fast Portions were big Complimentary topping caddy provided with tasty sides to add to your meal
Cons: The meat was super bland. I had the dish that had a sampling of every street taco meat. The only one that had any sort of flavoring was the pastor (pork) taco. The rest has ZERO flavoring ie no salt, pepper or spices. I guess they wanted you to add your own flavor with the complimentary caddy that has onion, cilantro, salsa and limes. My husband ordered the steak torta and said the beef was also unseasoned and bland. His dish came with jalapeños and he added some of the salsa to add flavor to the dish.
Overall, we were severely disappointed because we thought the meat would be seasoned prior to cooking but I guess it is just the style of their cooking. I’ve asked around to my friends of Mexican heritage to ask their opinion and they said that some authentic places have seasoned meat and others add very little seasoning to their meat.
This place is very popular so there definitely is a market for this style of cooking but my palate likes more seasoning. The waitress was very nice but spoke limited English. Have fun if you go but don’t expect seasoned food or maybe we ordered the...
Read moreWe've tried this place a couple of times (6 months apart), and the service was good both times; however, the food wasn't both times.. On our first visit the server didn't speak English at all so we did a lot of pointing at the menu, and we knew some Spanish.. On our second visit the server was bilingual... They don't serve rice and beans like a lot of other Mexican restaurants, only black bean soup; nor, do they automatically serve chips and salsa... We ordered guac and chips to start (no flavor at all, only avocados blended together (not the traditional ingredients: tomatoes, jalapeños, etc)). The cost of that was $9 and they only give you a handful of chips... We drink imported beer, so we paid $12 for 2 Pacificos... We also noticed they charge a TABC tax which we had never seen before at other restaurants we have ordered alcohol/beer/wine from... Attached is the receipt from our visit... We will not be returning, and we only visited this location a second time to give it another try before saying no way... 2 stars is for the servers that were nice on...
