I regret that it took me almost 3 years of living in Dallas before trying Mike's Chicken, because I was missing out the BEST fried chicken in town!
What stood out first to me was the price. Since it was a popular restaurant, I assumed that they would charge $13+ for a meal. Nope, they have combo starting at $9, and it's FILLING. The first time we tried it was take-out, since it was close to my cat's emergency hospital. My boyfriend stopped by at 7:40 PM, which was near closing time, so luckily he didn't have to wait long. It took 45 mins for the drive home but the chicken was still FRESH and JUICY!
I still vividly remember the first bite I took. The skin was crispy and well seasoned, and the meat was super juicy. It wasn't dry like most places, but JUICY. Dipping the chicken into their special house sauce was the perfect combo. The menu said we get only one side, but the cashier told everyone to pick two sides so I thought that was weird, but hey, I'm not complaining at all!
I tried their mac & cheese and fries, and it was good. The fries stayed crispy after a long drive, but their mac & cheese was a little too dry for my taste. You also get a honey biscuit along with your combo, making it the perfect comfort food heaven. I think my 2 legs & 2 thighs combo (1 sauce + 2 sides + 1 biscuit) was only $11-- THAT'S A STEAL! I do wish that they give you more sauce because a tiny cup is not enough for 4 pieces of fried chicken. I got creamy corn for my side the second time and I really like that. Their chicken tenders were juicy and delicious too.
Do expect a long wait if you go during normal lunch/dinner hour. I came back a week after with some friends at dinner and it took about 30 mins to get our food. The line was long and the entire restaurant was filled with people, but nobody minded the wait because it was WORTH. Customer service was great both times we visited, and there's always a person who checks on you at the end to make sure you received the best service.
If they ever open a 3rd location up in Plano, I'd probably stop by everyday because it really is the best fried chicken you...

Now I know what you're thinking. "Fried chicken is fried chicken, and this is just another fried chicken spot." But NOTHING can be further from the truth. Mike's Chicken puts their Vietnamese heritage into every crispy bite. Plus, the chicken is always made to order(with that being said, if you don't have 20-25 minutes to burn; order ahead). Ensuring that you consistently get fresh hot chicken every time!
Since this was my first time ordering, I got the half chicken, which comes with 2 sides(we went with the mac n cheese and baked beans)and a biscuit. Just to broaden our backs a little more, we added coleslaw, mashed potatoes with gravy, and Mike's dipping sauce. The chicken was divine! Deep golden brown with flecks of black pepper embedded in the crust, this chicken was perfectly cooked. It was well seasoned, juicy, and had the most satisfying crunch ever! The baked beans were really good with a tangy and slightly sweet flavor (which I love), and the mashed potatoes were good as well. Now, the Mac n cheese and coleslaw was not what was up. The mac n cheese was surprisingly bland, and the coleslaw was as well( which hurt my poor little feelings). It was almost like they forgot to dress the coleslaw. The biscuit was fluffy and tasty, and the Mike's sauce paired well with chicken.
Even though 2 of the sides we ordered were not a hit, Mike's Chicken is a solid chicken spot. So much so that when we have a hanckering for some fried chicken, the first thing out of our mouths is Mike's!

Overall, this place is a steal with the amount of food and the quality you get, all for a great price. However, I would not call it the best fried chicken I have ever had. All of the food, the chicken and the sides, are exactly what you would expect at a nice sit down restaurant, yet they are available at this fast casual place. Tried almost all of the sides and they were cooked very well, with definitely quality ingredients used. The chicken itself was consistently moist and cooked very well, not under or overcooked at all. It's really the consistency in high quality that amazed me here. Taste wise? Unfortunately, when it comes to fried chicken, I like a bit of dankness (more oily or greasy) and this was the opposite of that. The sauces could have made up for it, but I was really not a fan of any of them, they were not up to par with Ricky's Comeback sauce or Cane's sauce. The meal missed that extra oomph I wanted, but don't get me wrong, still very very solid, and I will for sure be back.
A lot of people say the spicy tenders are the best, and they were good, but I think I liked the plain, non spicy, fried chicken the most. Best sides imo are the corn and fries. Hope they open a location closer to the Fort Worth...
