I will begin by saying this place serves fresh, tasty food and it comes out fast. But if you're looking for value-priced food, friendly, personable service and comfort while dining, this is not the place.

A group of us from the office arrived to this trendy spot in downtown on a Wednesday afternoon about 11:45am. There were six of us & we were expecting a sit-down lunch, only to find this place a tiny, narrow place with a very few tables in the back & a crowded counter in front to retrieve your order. Directly across from the counter are about 3 kiosks to place your order. I don't mind admitting I'm a bit of a food snob, but I will always give a place a try. I might have given more stars if:

  1. Someone would have acknowledged us when we entered - there were tons of staff in there & they were moving at a steady pace - not rushing.
  2. Someone would have walked around from the counter or at least shouted - place your order on the kiosk! Sure, they're right there in your face, but someone like me is not used to being forced to place my order this way, so I didn't even notice them.
  3. Would have been great if someone would have - dare I say - come out from behind the counter other than to place to-go orders on the rack. Tell us where our food will come out & where we go next. Actually tell us when we enter whether there is seating.

After the big disappointment in ordering, we decided to take it to go and drove back to the office. I snapped a couple of photos of my food but due to the fact that a few people walked in right after us, we felt rushed to get out of there (is that the owner's preference, that no one dine there?), so I didn't take any photos of the place.

I don't eat ramen (shocker, lol), so I ordered chicken thigh on steamed buns. Ingredients on their website menu: steamed bun filled with your choice of protein, greens, pickled vegetables & hoisin. On the kiosk, I thought I saw red onions & tried to remove it, but there was no option to get it the way I wanted. And the website informs you that you'll receive (2) but I didn't see that on the kiosk. All that time waiting I thought I paid $8 for one, ha. I have to admit it was delicious, so 5 stars for that. The meat was fresh and not greasy, the buns were light and great. I loved it.

My co-worker ordered - Signature miso $14.50 Website menu listed ingredients: creamy pork broth seasoned with sweet & nutty soybean paste, topped with pork belly, bamboo shoots, corn kernels, bean sprouts & green onion. She didn't want the bamboo shoots but there was no option to remove them. She's ordered from this place before, so she knew what she was getting and loved it.

I love downtown and the little hole-in-the-wall places but I wish the person who selected this place would have done a little more research - it's definitely not a place to sit down & enjoy your lunch with 5 other people, but rather a place to order delivery from. Which is fine, since the...

Yeah, never again. Food is disgusting but looked so good. The customer service is non existent and no one acknowledges or explain anything to you. When you walk in you’d think to make eye contact or a welcomed greeting from the employees…..none at all.

Food has potential but they have this ridiculous policy that I did not see at all. I spent time trying to figure things out and not one person cared to offer guidance. After all I am walking into your establishment as a first time guest. Not everyone knows the system to your business. I paid $5 tip and I didn’t even have utensils given to me, nor napkin & chopsticks. I got up from seat three times because of that. Also, they’re not afraid to put ghetto signs instructing you not to eat at the bar if you order from the kiosk, but nothing noting how I’d receive my order? They called out numbers and I didn’t even know where they were getting it from. Again, I had to figure it out that the last 3/4 digits of your order number is what they called. SOOOO CONFUSING!!!

Then there’s no way of knowing who ordered what? Yall don’t have an expo monitor or something? I ordered an iced tea and no one gave it to me. I assumed I had to go up to the bar and when I asked for it he gave me a price. I rebutted “I paid for it already”.

I’ve been to holes in the wall 100x better than this. In fact, I could’ve just warmed up instant noodle and been more happy with it.

If you want mediocre Ramen, horrible service, & to dine at a place where you have to serve and do everything yourself…this is your place!

If you want actual customer service, good food and a welcoming environment then SKIP. FAST.

I’ll be dammed if stepped foot in here again. You’ll see the before and after of my bowl. I really tried eating it but my stomach kept turning.

& Let’s face it NO SERVICE IS BAD SERVICE.

Absolutely going to dispute this with my bank especially leaving a tip and not one person cared if I...

BEWARE OF THIS PLACE!!! SHADY AF!!!

the past 3+ times i have eaten there, the price of my food has changed days AFTER already paying? make that make sense. i know this because one time i came in to eat, ordered at the kiosk, specifically remembered my food being $49 and some change with tip, yet two days later i get a notification saying the price of my food from oni ramen changed from $49 to $53 and some change. then it happened again. and again. yes it may only be a few dollars but there is no reason why the price of my food should be changing days later especially when i’ve already included tip initially.

im a server myself so i have a hunch whoever is working there is adding additional tips to the receipts (servers/staff manually put in tips after you pay when dining in somewhere). i’ve gone to eat at restaurants, received a notification on my phone of the charge on my card, a day or two later have seen the price increase because of tip. which i have been okay with because im the one who put that tip there. but why is this constantly happening to me here at oni ramen when ive already included my tip? multiple times? i have no explanation besides this one.

i’ve even tried calling this place multiple times on multiple different days to resolve this issue effectively and privately with no answer. they either need to fix their phone or learn to answer it because it just rings and rings or you get sent to voicemail immediately !

it’s sad because the food here is actually pretty good. but between the lack of customer service (you literally serve yourself. no, literally, they don’t even bring your food to you when you dine in. it gets put on an expo window where you grab it yourself) and literally every other thing ab this place besides the food, you’re sure to always slightly regret your purchase here at oni ramen !

hats off to the chefs who make the food here though, yall are the only thing saving...

Once you enter, it is a narrow restaurant layout. If you do not plan to sit at the bar, must order at kiosk and seat yourself. If you do want to sit at the bar, you order there. Keep your ticket from kiosk, and when order is ready, they’ll call your ticket number. Mine was the last three digits on my order number. I ordered the rich tonkotsu and chicken karaage. Broth had lots of flavor, and you can pay for spice if you want to make it spicy. It will be a chili paste that you add yourself. Noodles were good and chewy. Had an abundance of them in my bowl! The piece of protein that comes with it was thick and flavorful. They were also not stingy with the bamboo shoots and mushroom. The portion for the price is very reasonable. The karaage was fried to perfection and was juicy! It is well seasoned and might be too spicy if you are ordering for kids. There is also a self-served ice water station if you do not want to order beverages. Overall, I would definitely return for the food! Good ramen place in Deep Ellum that is worth a try if you are in the area.
