My boyfriend is absolutely in love with Sam's! Every week when he visits me, he suggests Sam's for lunch. I've never seen him so in love with a restaurant!
Both their chicken and beef schwarmas are delicious. Especially when served with both sauces. Everyone has their own preferences on what sauce they want and each sauce goes better with one than the other. Because I'm terrible at making life choices, I went with both sauces on my schwarma.
Their baklava is yummy too! It's flaky but not TOO flaky, sweet but not TOO sweet. Yum! (:
Almost forgot about their fries! They serve the french fries with some kind of spice powder sprinkled all over it, giving it a bit of a kick. They're not spicy though!
Lastly, the food here is ALWAYS fresh. The french fries always come out crispy and stay crispy on the drive home. The schwarmas are warm, and the baklava isn't ever stale when I get it.
Their hours need to be updated! I feel like they sort of open and close whenever they want.. Their sign said open at 11AM and the last time I went, the doors didn't open until 11:40AM. I waited in line for 40 min! Then another 10 min to order and get my food ): Good thing the cashier is super friendly and polite, all is...
Read moreIt's hard to describe the magic that is Sam's. Sure, it's the best shawarma & falafel I have had anywhere in the world (including the middle east). Or the fact they seem to find ripe tomatoes in the winter. Sure, their personalized service means that they always remember to include 3 x the hot sauce (homemade, scrumptious) with my order.... But the true beauty really comes down to Sam himself, and his children. When my husband, my two kids and I walk in to the restaurant, we honestly feel like cherished friends & family- Let me tell you, as someone who is far from home, this is invaluable. I know I'm not alone... Just scroll through his facebook page of UCD students and profs who feel the same. Even my octogenarian parents insist on visiting Sam every time they are in from Canada. Sam never fails to spoil us, and always greets my kids with a wink and a joke. Sam says he is lucky to have all of these friends and customers ... The truth is... It is we who are lucky to have him, his children, and his establishment. But seriously... Try the falafel and hot sauce. And the lamb. And the pita. And the hummus.... (For bonus points, check out videos of Sam dancing &...
Read moreThis restaurant has gone down hill steadily after moving to their current location. A decade ago, the food was fresh and homemade but that is not the case anymore.. The “shawarma” served is not shawarma and seems to be some sort of frozen processed product that is warmed up then chopped up to try to mask this. I would bet that there is no shawarma spit in the kitchen at all. The fries are pretty clearly frozen store bought and do not taste fresh at all. Pretty bad sign if you can’t cut up potatoes and drop them in the fryer. Food has continuously become more expensive over time while quality has declined. The food is mostly store bought and then assembled in the kitchen. It is certainly edible but hard to justify the cost for most people in yolo county for what it is. The food at east Med chain fast food restaurants like The kebab shop is much...
