Interesting place. Based on appearance, no one would ever eat there. Upon entry you arectrested to the sight of a long defunct bar or atleast what appeared to be one piled high with a variety of items. Some them clearly associated with a restaraunt and from the cleaning supplies and tools scattered haphazardly, some clearly associated with a the rooms if a custodial service. The actual dining area was lean, if completely utilitarian. A large screen TV showing a very bad Chinese movie in Chinese lent ambiance and served to entertain the wait staff. Although they watched the movie obsessively, they were able to look after my needs and wants adequately without demonstrating any significant amount of charm. The food was surprisingly quite good. Have the sizzling cubed ribeye steak, somewhat expensive, but a nice sized serving and very tasty. Egg rolls were standard and ok. Excellent tea was served almost immediately and included in the price if the meal. Meal completed, a trip to the toilette was in order. If the entry was surprising, the toilet was a shocking nightmare. Starting with a circle of grime about two feet across centered on the door knob, it went downhill from there. If you go there, just eat the tasty good and look out the nice...
Read moreWe were visiting my godmother (not fairy-godmother, but close) and she had a few recommendations for lunch. We decided on a Pho place, ended up on wrong street because the address I put into G-maps was address for the 2nd recommendation....but surredipity has a way of jumping to conclusions and we ended up at Tasty Kitchen Chinese restaurant on F St. Very pleasant, nothing fancy friendly staff. We ordered family style: 1/2 Peking duck, mixed mushrooms & beef w/ black pepper sauce, honey walnut shrimp and salted chicken fried rice.
We go many Chinese restaurants and order different dishes just to try them out, but my (not fairy) godmother is sensitive to spicy food, so we ordered safe dishes. While not spectacular in any sense, all dishes were freshly prepared had good taste and portions were good sized. There were only 3 of us and we ate until we were almost bursting and still had a good amount of take home.
Very enjoyable experience, good, filling food, well-prepared and served by friendly staff - definitely recommended 👌 and we...
Read moreTasty Kitchen offers a family-style dining experience, which is great for a big group. We went with 8 people on a weekend night and were seated right away. No reservation needed. The restaurant has a casual vibe with lazy susan tables in the center of each booth, perfect for sharing dishes.
However, the service was a bit of a letdown. Since it wasn't busy, the staff seemed relaxed to the point of inattentiveness. We frequently had to flag them down to order or ask for the bill.
The food itself was decent. We ordered a variety of dishes like egg fried rice, orange chicken, chicken chow mein, cashew nut chicken, Mongolian beef, and kung pao beef. Most dishes were okay, but a little on the generic side. The orange chicken, a classic, was a bit too heavy on the sweet and sour sauce. A couple of us enjoyed the Mongolian beef, which had a nice savory flavor.
Overall, Tasty Kitchen is a decent option for a casual family-style meal, especially for a...
