This was quite possibly the worst dinner and service I've ever received.
While in Daytona for dance Nationals, we were looking forward to a nice sit-down dinner. It was myself and my two daughters (A&M) and my daughter's girlfriend(C). C works for Yard House here in Hanover, Maryland and they have excellent food and Cheddar's is affiliated with the same group so we were excited to dine here.
The hostess greeted us and sat us right away. When our server came, there was no greeting, no 'hello my name is' The first words were "what do you want to drink?" That was immediately off-putting but OK. We ordered drinks and nachos. On the menu, the cheese appeared to have meat or bacon on top. Within 2 minutes, the nachos came, delivered by another server, there was no meat on top. We were all starving so we ate them anyway. After eating the top layer of chips, the rest were broken. When our drinks came, she didn't ask how they were, just "Do you know what you want?" We kind of looked at each other, while she stood there awkwardly, we said we could be ready. Me- medium sirloin w/ half rack M- medium sirloin A- medium rare sirloin w/ shrimp C- chicken tenders w/ a half rack We also asked for more chips and one margarita. After 10 minutes, someone brought the drink- no sugar rim, we needed refills and still no chips. I saw the server at another table, tried signaling that we needed her, she did not get the hint. 5 more minutes- she came, we asked again for chips, the cheese was kind of dried up but it was the principal now. 5 more minutes later someone brought a basket of chips. 10 minutes after that, dinner came. This time it was our server. She set up the tray stand and then someone else delivered the tray. She stood awkwardly looking at the ticket and at us for several minutes, I assume she couldn't remember who ordered what. Understandable. We told her what was ours, let her know A and I should have gotten a salad (which usually came before the meal) and we refills. Everything looked pretty good until we cut into our steaks- Every single one was full of fat and gristle. I had to use my fingers and really go in with the knife to cut any actual meat out for M, She ate a little until she got fat in her mouth and was grossed out and then just stopped eating. The server never came back to check on us in a reasonable amount of time so A went and told another server what was going on and asked could they send her over. Quite a few minutes went by as we stared at our food. When she came over, she just kind of stood there, looking at us, as if not knowing what to say... I explained to her what the issue was and that all of our steaks were very fatty. She proceeded to ask did we want something else? We said that we would like to have another different steak for A and I but that M didn't want anything else. I repeatedly explained, she truly wasn't getting it and just stood there unsure what to do or say so we asked if perhaps a manager could be of assistance. The manager came over, no introduction, asked "what's going on" we told him to which he said... "So just a bad cut" Yes, a bad cut. He agreed to make us fillets and to take one sirloin off the check. He personally brought them out but could not sit them down because our server never took away any dishes. My first cut into my steak was perfect... The second cut went straight to a lump of gristle and that's when I just gave up. The manager never did come back to check in with us and by the time the server did we were completely over it and ready to leave. We asked for a box for what was worth taking... Paid our bill through the kiosk and left. It is absolutely such a shame that no one cared enough to check in with us and this server was completely clueless. Perhaps she was new but if so maybe lead with that... Especially considering she was waiting on three out of four people who have been or are servers. We knew it wasn't her fault, she didn't cut the steaks, but she also did not seem to have the knowledge of how to handle...
Read moreMy wife, daughter and I decided to try Cheddarâs in Daytona Beach last night based on my daughterâs recommendation (she had previously eaten at another location). Being a Friday around 7:00 PM, we expected there to be a wait and there was. After about 25 minutes, we were led to our table and seated in the section with the bar.
After about 15 minutes, our server (I didnât get her name) arrived with croissants and asked what we would like to drink. We gave her our drink order and she said she would be right back. We each ate our croissant and waited for our drinks. Approximately 20 minutes later, our waitress returned with our sodas and took our food order.
After giving our order of appetizers and main dishes, our waitress left. We patiently waited another 35 minutes without seeing our server or being acknowledged by any other staff. My wife contacted an employee (possibly a hostess) walking by our table and asked if she could check on our order since it had been well over a half hour. The employee walked away as if she was checking, but after several more minutes without our waitress coming by or any food being brought to our table, our level of frustration left us no choice but to leave and find a different place to eat.
From the time we were seated until we left, the elapsed time was nearly an hour and a half. Additionally, my wife and I observed other tables, who were seated well after we were, receive their drinks and food. I understand the dynamics of food service, especially during busy times or if staffing levels are low, however, the activity level during our experience was not unusually busy for a Friday evening.
I suppose it could have been just a bad coincidence of our waitress going on a break or some other easily explained reason, but since we were never made aware of anything unusual circumstance (such as a lost order or running out of an item), I am left to conclude that poor attention to customers satisfaction is the main culprit. My hope is that management might recognize this and assure that future customers donât have a similar experience to ours.
Unfortunately, this has left a poor image in my mind about Cheddarâs, and I feel inclined to choose a different restaurant when I dine in...
