Update 2: Back again to our favorite hole in the wall Japanese restaurant- we ordered the following: sashimi 22pcs and sashimi 12 pcs , miso soups ( so salty today and tasted not the same homemade miso soup they make), crispy fish salad, sashito peppers, shrimp yaki soba . We were so full and weren't able to finish everything. We will just order the regular deluxe sashimi for next time. Overall another enjoyable dinner. My only comment is for them to keep their bathrooms clean.
Update: Came back with friends. We ordered our entrees and I can say that food were served on a timely fashion. As soon as the last dish was served though, we decided to order for another noodle dish. However we didn't expect to wait for 30 minutes for a noodle dish. The owner/server should have given us a notice that it will take a while if the kitchen is backed up with orders. So just an advice that order all at once otherwise you will get stuck there.
Initial- Ok... here's my take on Masamune. Definitely a legit Japanese place if you want fresh sashimi. I agreed that this place is a hole in the wall but definitely a hidden gem. My husband is a sashimi snob and am glad we found this place . We live next town and we drove to try this place based on the reviews.. Take note - the chefs behind the counters preparing the sashimi and sushis are Japanese. We couldn't believe the price for the quality of fish. Dishes we ordered- Sashimi de luxe, grilled octopus, soft shell crab, live oysters , seafood miso soup, regular miso soup , matcha cheesecake and crispy fish salad. Our favorites were the sashimi , miso soup ( definitely not same with the ones you get from other Asian restaurants) and the fish salad. For the live oysters, they were served with sauces which I found too salty. Soft shell crabs were good but didn't like it served with spicy mayo. I suggest to have it on the side and you can ask for ponzu sauce too so you can try both sauce. Grilled squid was kinda on the tough side otherwise marinated well. Yes, we...
Read moreIt was my first time going there today. Unfortunately, I live about an hour away so I can't go anytime soon but 😍😍 I had their Special Mune Box (chicken teriyaki, cold noodles, fried dumplings, california rolls with wasabi & ginger, and four pcs of sushi (1 was tuna, the other was salmon..idk the other two)) and for dessert I had red bean Mochi ice cream (i love mochi so much). Sooo the Hostess was super nice and enthusiastic. They have great service. It's a small place but nicely decorated. The two guys making the sushi also seemed to be having fun while working. It's quite a friendly atmosphere. I wish I could go more frequently. Anyway, my food was really good. It was my first time having sushi so I tried the salmon only and gave the rest to my father. The cole noodles were really helpful when it came to having the wasabi lol The prices for Lunch were also really good. Special boxes are $11-15 dollars and the regular boxes are $8 something. The boxes also come with miso soup and a salad to start with which were also good. The appetizers from what I can recall were all $4 or really close. I had Gyouza, and there were 5 of them? I wish I had pictures but my phone was dead. But I'd say no more or less than 5-6 gyouza. And they actually put the soy sauce in a nice little ceramic pouring thing instead of putting out those Kikkoman bottles. The outside of the shop is also really nice and gives off that authentic Japanese sushi place feel. I really will like to come again whenever I come back to this area. They also have a special card (?) for regular customers. When I was there like there were three separate groups/persons that were regulars and that the hostess knew well. Anyway. I really recommend this place. Very nice atmosphere and good...
Read moreMy wife and I first discovered Masamune about 6 months ago. We now drive an hour just to have dinner here. This place isn't good, it's not even great. It is hands down the best sushi restaurant I have been to. Ever. Soon as you walk in the staff greet you the same way you would be in Japan and going into restaurant. But let's talk food. Let's start with the miso soup. It's normally a bland and almost unwanted additional to any meal. I have often turned it down because I like a bit ore flavor in my soup. I ALWAYS get the miso soup here. It's much more flavorful and the broth has a richness that is hard to beat. Then there's the sushi. The first time we came here we asked for a few rolls and then also had some pieces of sashimi ala carte. Very tasty. Our second time we wanted to be a bit more adventurous and asked the chefs to just give us a sample of their more exotic stuff. What they brought out was the single most delicious sashimi and sushi I have ever tasted. Then I found out how old some of the fish was. Turns out they age some of their fish, just like a restaurant ages their meat. We had 5 week old kingfish that tender and delicious and frankly it was hard to believe the fish was that old. They offer the traditional California rolls and others that are catered to the American palette but they are about as good as you would expect them to be. They serve traditional warm dishes as well and we always steal most of our daughters katsu for science. I really can go on but I'll leave it at this. If you are an adventurous eater and don't mind trying new things ( or paying a bit extra) ask for who they don't have on the menu or to be the chefs surprise you with that they have. You will not be...
