We visited Amato's tonight for my oldest daughter's birthday dinner.
Bad experience. Kitchen needs better coordination.
Our dishes arrived over a 30 minute period, with the kids dishes arriving 50 minutes after ordering, my pizza arriving at an hour, and my wife's finally arriving at an hour and twenty minutes.
Out of respect for my wife, I didn't eat my order while we waited for hers.
We boxed our orders up, and left when hers finally arrived. My pizza was cold by this point. The kids all really liked the pasta that they ordered.
Everyone that walked by our table had to kick my wife's chair (employee or otherwise, one server even joked about it), it seems.
To their credit, Amato's did take my wife's sandwich off the bill - we didn't complain nor did we ask them to. The waitress was polite, and repeatedly apologized.
I'm not annoyed at the time it took to receive our order - it's Saturday night, and I had no expectation that it would be out quickly. There should not have been that much of time difference between our orders.
It is unlikely that we'll be back.
On the pizza itself:
The crust was decent, but cold and soggy by the time I ate it. Crust had a decent char, and the outermost edges were still crispy in places with a good chew. Was probably really good when it was hot. The crust was a very thin crust, and the pizza was cut pie-style.
The sauce was flavorful, and the best part of the pizza. I got the tomato sauce, which was perfectly seasoned, very slightly spicy, and even cold was amazing!
The pepperonis were moderately bland, and not crispy. Good quantity, not too much, not too little.
The sausage was bland, but at least was fresh sausage, and not the generic precooked sausage pellets that some places use. The quantity was a little on the low side.
The cheese seemed to be a good quality hand-torn fresh mozzarella, and tasted good. Quantity was perfect for this style of pizza.
Overall, I'd give the pizza an adjusted 4 out of 5 for cold pizza. Better pepperoni and sausage would have knocked it out of the...
Read moreI had been wanting to try Amato’s for a while. The outdoor seating area looked charming and the reviews seemed promising. We went on a Tuesday around 3 p.m., and there were only two people seated at a booth. A sign at the entrance said to seat yourself, so we did—but no one came over for nearly 10 minutes. We genuinely thought the two women already seated might have been staff having a meeting. At one point, we even checked Google Maps to make sure the restaurant was actually open. Eventually, I walked next door to the takeout counter to ask what the process was. When I returned, a waitress finally came over with menus and took our orders.
My husband ordered the black and blue salad (no tomatoes), I got the spaghettini and meatballs, and our kids shared an 8-inch pepperoni pizza. The food came out relatively quickly, but my husband’s salad had tomatoes and had to be sent back. The waitress brought it back fairly fast, but the food itself was a letdown across the board.
My pasta was incredibly bland. The marinara lacked flavor, and while the meatballs were cooked well, they were under-seasoned and dominated by an odd-tasting herb I couldn’t place. Honestly, a jar of Rao’s would’ve been a major upgrade. The garlic bread that came with the dish tasted stale and unpleasant.
My husband’s salad was underwhelming—just lettuce, red onions, and an overcooked slab of steak on top. He requested medium rare, but it arrived medium well. The steak was fine, but nothing special.
The kids’ pizza was just okay. It didn’t have the pillowy, wood-fired crust you’d expect, and it certainly didn’t taste wood-fired. It was edible, but forgettable.
In the end, Amato’s might be a nice spot for an evening cocktail on the patio, but based on the food alone, we won’t be returning. I always judge Italian restaurants by the basics—pizza and spaghetti—and Amato’s missed the...
Read moreMy wife and I just recently moved back to Delaware after moving away for many years. Amato's is quickly becoming our GoTo Restaurant. The Service has always been top-notch for us and NEVER a bad meal. My wife just loves the Three Cheese Tortellini's with Alfredo and plain Cheese Wood Fired Pizza's. My favorites, where to begin...the "PMS" Wood Fired Pizza is amazing. Pep, Mushroom, & Sausage always my goto pie and this one did not disappoint. The Steak Sandwich is hands-down the best I've ever had anywhere. Super-tender every time. and their Sausage & Peppers in Marinara comes really really close to beating out my Italian Grandmothers Sausage & Peppers. The only reason I did not give the 5th star and the only reason the Sausage & Peppers did not beat out my Grandmother's, is the dish didnt come with bread. I had to order the plain garlic bread (twist my arm.) :-) it is almost required by religious rule that you must have good crusty bread for dipping and spooning your sausage and peppers. :-) I still love this restaurant and these wonderful people and I'm coming back for more Sausage & Peppers, & Killer Steak Sammiches!! Thank you Amato's!! Keep up...
