As a general rule, this place is pretty good. It's a large, airy space with lots of seating and options for plugs if you're working. The wifi works well and the options of bar or coffee is good depending on what kind of drink you need to get your work done. Parking is extremely limited in front but usually you can find a spot right around the corner.
Typically, the people behind the counter in the morning are perfectly nice and get everything done correctly with a smile, albeit sometimes really slowly, especially if you order food that needs to be warmed (like a burrito or a muffin). Most of the people who work there, if it's not busy, will take the care to bring your drink to your table, which is a nice touch. I've been in this space for my fiancée's office party, and the staff were always wonderful.
I'm knocking off a star for this otherwise 4-star spot because of the experience we had at 7am on Wednesday 2/20/19. My fiancée and I arrived to a completely empty coffee shop, with the exception of the barista (white, straight black hair to her chin, and bangs - she was wearing a yellow beanie) and one man who had already ordered and received his drink. She was chatting with him at the time we walked up to the counter, and proceeded to ignore us for several seconds before turning to us, irritated, and saying "hi?" as if there were a question to why we were there. We both ordered - a small almond milk latte and a medium regular latte, both "for here" - and she sighed at us and put the order in the computer. She didn't have anything to say to us that wasn't rude or snippy, though as I said she was just able to carry on a pleasant conversation with the guy before us.
When the drinks were done, she never called them out to let us know they were ready (we had sat down around the corner) or brought them over to the table. I went up to get them, said "thank you!" and she just goes, "yup" with her back to me and no attempt to be polite. BOTH of our drinks were made incorrectly. They were both put in to-go cups, despite us asking for mugs to stay (maybe an unconscious desire of her's for us to leave?) and the almond milk latte was made medium and the regular made small instead of vice versa. Keep in mind, this woman had NO other customers in the store and therefore nothing else to do except make two very simple drinks. We sat there, drinking our incorrectly-made coffee because we were too fed up to ask her to take forever to remake them. We watched as she interacted perfectly nicely with the next several construction men who came in from the job site across the street before leaving. Overall, a very disappointing customer service experience from an otherwise nice place to grab a...
Read moreI've been to Improper City numberous times when friends lack creativity and effort to pick another spot. This place is spacious, lively, and dog-friendly outside. They open early as a co-working space with a full espresso bar, which is cool.
Special shout out to Duncan and Gianna. They're cool bar staff.
My issues with Improper have been rather consistent. I have a common last name, so my tabs have had two to three times more drinks on them than I ordered. Sure, I can be blamed for not checking before I pay or leave, but that's what the bar staff is paid to do - charge the correct customer for the correct drinks.
Staff tells everyone they'll add a 20% tip if you forget to close your tab, and I'd find charges of $60-$100 on my credit card statements. I brought this up with two managers, and they said, "That sucks." Not, "How can we fix it?"
The bar's drink prices keep going up, and they have no happy hour specials. Their cocktail menu is rather uninspiring and rarely - if ever - changes aside from a "seasonal Old Fashioned."
They don't post on their website if parts or the whole place is closed for special events, which is pretty common.
The bar itself doesn't serve food, but they regularly bring in food trucks. In the dozens of times I've been here, I have never once ordered from the same food truck twice. They're that bad. I know the bar has no control over the quality of those food trucks, but I don't get why they put their own reputation at risk for $20 tacos.
Last, which can be said about this entire area, there's no readily available parking. The nearby apartments take most of the street up, so you'll likely have to walk a few blocks. Again, this is not exactly the bar's fault, but for such a huge venue next to a huge gym, it's not suited for commuters who want to visit.
The only reason I go here is because it's popular and easy to host larger groups. The place is substantially mediocre and overpriced...
Read moreLove the atmosphere. They decorated this place so nicely and it's incredibly spacious. The drip coffee is so good. But, the staff is alright depending on who's there. All the women are always so kind. But I remember dealing with a red headed guy who was incredibly rude for no reason. I believe he tried to heat up my bagel without gloves and when I mentioned it, he was clearly in a mood but eventually remade it. Also, he just kinda tossed the coffee cup top on the table when I asked for it. He must not like money shrugs. So now I just buy my own pastries and make my own coffee. I visited here at night as well. So at night it was weird. They had a paper waiting list where I wrote my name down and said they'd come get me when they had a table inside available. I asked how would they remember my face in relation to the name like would they text me and they said they'd just come find me. Did they? You guessed it, they did not. I had to go to the host multiple to times to ask for where I was on the list. She tried to sit me in a tent FULL of non mask wearers. There was no space between anyone. So I said I'll wait until something is open inside. I get the feeling it was a race thing. I felt like I was intentionally not prioritized. I already felt a type of way about the rude red head. Anyway. They do have nice people working here but, it's like I want to like this place because it's convenient since theres plenty of parking. But I'm good. I'd rather fix myself a drink at home then deal with all that stress of...
