For those times you wish you could write a review without any stars. The menu is a bit strange because they do not make it clear what you are ordering or what you will get. When you ask someone what the difference is they think about it too. But that certainly does not warrant one or no stars. What does is the hygiene practices at this establishment. I watched the worker take the pita bread and put it on the working surface with his hand, open the pita holder and put it in. The pita holder is a barrier between the employee who for some reason does not wear gloves or a hat but works with fresh food that will be served uncooked. I was one of three people in line (not a peak time), it seemed like everyone was confused as to what to prepare and who ordered what. The gyro meat is shaved off the stake as normal, but they do this ahead of time and put it in a storage bin and heat it on the grill when you order it. This is definitely not the way this is supposed to be done. Falafel balls were mediocre at best just like the service and attention of the staff. Save your time, choose another spot. When I brought these issues to light, again, they just looked confused and sought no immediate fix or offer to remake the food. I'd rather give my 22.00 to someone outside and skip dinner.

So good! Highly recommend this place! Awesome that they have so many vegetarian and vegan options (maybe a little less than half the menu) as well as some gluten-free options. I got the 4x6 combo which had 6 falafels and 4 sides of my choice. All the sides are dairy-free (can add feta for an extra $0.75) and vegan, and the majority of them are gluten-free, too. I got the mushrooms, baba ganoush, green chile hummus, and roasted eggplant with tomatoes. It came with a salad with a tahini sauce as the dressing and a warmed pita on the side. So good!!! Every single item was so flavorful and fresh. It was so cool watching them make 6 fresh falafels just for me - they added the falafel batter into their falafel machine, turned it on, it started spinning, and it dropped 6 balls right into the deep fryer! The atmosphere is really nice. It's a counter service restaurant, but it looks fancier like a typical table service one. The chairs are wooden and really beautiful - they have different styles and some of them look like pieced-together wood slices so you can see all the edges and grains of the tree. Hard to explain, but it's a work of art. There is an outdoor patio as well, but it's right next to busy traffic.

When I was in my twenties, a day trip by bus to Boulder was a fun experience. My friends and I didn't go with any specific goals in mind, just hanging out on the 16th Street Mall, perhaps visiting a bookstore or record shop. I can't imagine spending a day so aimlessly now, and sometimes that’s a shame. In those old days, there were one or two reliable places for lunch or dinner, and Falafel King was one of them. Such good Mediterranean food - no wonder their hummus is now featured at Whole Foods, Alfalfa's, and similar outlets. Times may have changed for me, but Falafel King is still around, and I enjoy visiting the Colorado Boulevard location. It brings a little bit of Boulder to Denver, and has a bit of the feeling of those older, younger days, too. For another review of this establishment, see "Falafel King Rules the Plant-based Falafel Empire" by Amber Taufen in the March 6, 2012 issue of Westword.

Customers are at risk of getting a foodborne illness from eating at this place. This staff will cook raw chicken and turkey without using any kind of thermometer to ensure chicken is cooked to the proper temperature! The mint lemonade and sporty are basically pools of bacteria the mint tea is used over and over again with random water bottles floating around inside of the lemonade which are never washed. Food that needs to be refrigerated is stored in extremely dirty outdated fridges that do not work properly. Cold food items on the line where customers get to choose from are never temperature tested and always reused over and over again. There are also insects inside the restaurant ants can be found walking around in the main dining area. The Parsley used to garnish the majority of the food items served is never washed before being prepped. Many food items can be found stored right next to the restroom facilities which is extremely disgusting. Dishes use for dining and serving food are not properly washed under correct health code guidelines, dishes are usually washed with cold water half the time no soap or the proper sanitizer needed for washing and soaking dishes. Staff members are not properly trained most of the time extremely rude and do not follow proper food handling or sanitary techniques. All extreme health code violations which can cause very bad foodborne illnesses. Customers beware do not risk harming your family or yourself by eating at this awful restaurant from the moment you step foot in the door it's very obvious how filthy the place is just look at the walls and ceilings covered in dirt the vent above the food ordering area looks like it hasn't been cleaned since the day that place opened. Honestly this place should be shut down based off of how extremely filthy...

Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill sets the standard for falafel pitas. I decided to give Falafel King a try as I've never been to one before. I was looking forward to getting a dank pita falafel loaded with the usual stuff I get from Garbanzo. Well, I was sordidly disappointed simply over the fact that they charge extra for tabbouleh and baba ganoush which Garbanzo doesn't do. Sure, the green chili hummus was intersting. However, it doesn't redeem the over-priced pita I got. Garbanzo is cheaper and has better options that don't cost "extra." Not to mention, the staff was not wearing gloves when they were stocking the food counter which almost prompted me to ditch the place, but I was kind enough to over-look that part for the time being. Also, the falafel doesn't taste as good as Garbanzo's falafels. And then the pita wasn't an actual "pocket" as the menu suggested it would be. Instead, they just slopped all the toppings on top of the pita like a taco so guess what? The toppings fell out. Yeah, I should've saw that one coming, huh? Garbanzo actually puts everything INSIDE the pita like an actual pocket. Again, I am not mildly disappointed. I am sordidly disappointed. Never again, Falafel King. Long live Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill. I am annoyed as...
