Happi Wok — Restaurant in Dunedin

We finally found a great Chinese take out place in Dunedin! We’ve tried a handful since moving back here and have been disappointed more often than not...BUT happi wok made our tummies very very happy indeed! We are a family with everyone having personal preferences, so naturally we ordered a variety of meals and extra tidbits, we all shared bites and all of us were thrilled with everything we ordered! I won’t get overly wordy, I tend to ramble so I’ll try to keep this short & sweet! the Wonton Soup, Fried wontons, egg rolls & Crab Rangoons- All great! The crab rangoons, though a simple nibble-on had the most incredible flavors, like that little extra something that added to the blend they were addictive & so happy we got a large order so we could have some today with our leftovers sweet & sour chicken - cooked perfectly, not doughy, perfect consistency of breading and had good chunks of actual chicken in every bite. Also not soggy chicken lo mein- AMAZING! It’s our oldest’s favorite Chinese dish and we all agreed we thought she had great lo mein before but after last night we realized the others places were dull and bland in comparison. The flavor was outstanding! The sauce and goodies with the noodles and chicken, just wow! It’s never been my meal thing but after having a bite of hers I might just have to order it next time for myself, it was just that good! Kung pao chicken - very tasty, great variety of veggies and lots of chicken! it could have used a little more heat but my goodness was it good! general tao’s chicken - I’ve only had one place that I’ve ever been to that made perfect general tao’s chicken and that was nearly 10 years ago, that is until I tried it here! Cooked perfect, with perfect sauce...the flavor was on point! The only thing is you have to eat it fresh, reheating it today...well was eh? But last night for dinner - outstanding! I was hesitant ordering here on some of the reviews but the people who gave good reviews - gave outstanding reviews so we gave them a chance and SO SO...

I have tried 3 different dishes here so i will review all 3. The best was the last one i had. It was Happy Family which is pork, chicken, shrimp, crab meat and beef cooked with mixed vegetables. Happy Family traditionally has mussels also but i thought i would try it since its under chef specialties. It was priced at $11.25 and comes with white rice. It has a nice flavor and had a pretty good proportion of meats and vegetables. The 2nd visit was C30 combination platter for $7.95. It is mixed vegetables with your choice of chicken, shrimp or beef. I had chicken and it comes with fried rice. There were hardly any vegetables and it seemed mostly meat and sauce. I would give it 2 stars for flavor but the fried rice on 2 visits was so bad we threw it out. Has a nasty after taste that suggests it has been sitting for a while. The first visit was General Tso's chicken combination. It's supposed to be spicy but tasted like the meat was cooked in sweet and sour sauce. It had a bitter sweet flavor. As mentioned earlier fried rice really bad. I give this a 1 star because it's flavor was way off from what it should be. Horrible experience. I order beef and broccoli via uber eats. Delivery was timely and fine. However I got what appeared to be chicken and broccoli. Ok. Mistakes happen. I tried it thinking I'll make do but the chicken was gross. The eggrolls were really greasy, and the broccoli was greasy and coated in oil, gross. The chicken was worse. Did not taste like anything I had ever had, seriously the most processed, injected and flavorless chicken I have ever had! . So I called to complain and was told I was sent beef and broccoli. I assured her I did not get that and she argued with me!! So, I scooped up the meal and headed there. (Even though I ordered in so I wouldn't have to go out tonight.) I showed up with the chicken and broccoli, "oh, they said. It's chicken." Duh. They offered to make me another meal but I asked for my money back. They refused. Said I had to get it back from Uber. I "but you are paid by Uber."' That did not seem to register. Again she said I had to contact Uber! For a wrong order they sent out and the food was disgusting!! Not Uber's fault!! Bottom line. Bad food, bad customer service and I will never order from...
