Read moreThe Peanut Barrel and Crunchy's are, in my opinion, the best bars near MSU's campus. They both have outdoor seating, good staff (I've personally never had a negative experience with service at either place having been to Crunchy's ~6 times and The Peanut Barrel 30 times) but even though The Peanut Barrel's beer menu is nothing special the thing that makes them really unique out of all the East Lansing bars is that it is extremely low key. There will never be music so loud you can't talk to whoever it is you came with, there will never be loud/drunk college kids making your evening less enjoyable. There are still college kids (myself included here) but the clientele there is really just there to enjoy having a drink during a game or after a long day or to catch up with friends. The menu is short, simple and to the point. The food is good and reasonably priced and although the beer menu is nothing to write home about their mixed drinks are good and you can never go wrong with getting a Long Island there. I've been going to The Peanut Barrel my whole life (my Dad is friends with the owner) and I've always had a positive experience. This is the best bar to go if you're looking to just relax and have a drink with...
The burger was not bad , but it was not good. It was nothing special to be worth $9.50 with a side of BetterMade chips (and a pickle spear).
I could not believe that they charge $.85 for lettuce and tomato. I called the waiter over and asked if that was a joke.
Only reasons the place is still in business: 1. Nostalgic returning customers, 2. Location on Grand River.
They don’t even offer free peanuts and the place is called Peanut Barrel.
Don’t know how a place like this is still open while there are free peanuts at Five Guys down the street and HopCat’s extraordinary burgers/fries right around the corner.
If you have family visiting and they know what good food is, take them elsewhere. But good luck, East Lansing has nothing to offer for decent people.
Coming from someone who’s been in East Lansing for 6 years.
In summary, my 1 star review is due to disaccording prices for the quality of food served, the fact that peanuts aren’t given when you get sat, and that this was the first place that charged lettuce and tomato for a burger that tasted like what I would grill on a summer day on a lake.
Make your burgers $6.50-$7.50 and maybe you’ll have another Peanut barrel to open...
Read moreWe were looking for a spot for a bite to eat before a MSU basketball game at the Breslin. Our tried and true spots were all on an hour+ wait, we'd never been to the Peanut Barrel but I called and asked if they had room for three. The man on the phone (I assume the owner) was friendly despite their pre-game rush, and told me there were a few tables leaving so we headed over. We were able to park easily in a lot in back of the bar and found three spots at the bar rail as soon as we were inside. They owner and his daughter (our server) were beyond friendly and accommodating, despite the fact that my nine-year-old was taking up one of their bar seats. Burger's and fries were delicious- my dad ordered an olive burger on a friendly patron's recommendation in the parking lot and said it was the best olive burger he's ever had. Thank you to the owner Joe and his lovely daughter for the afternoon hospitality. We will be back the next time we're looking for a great...
