I have been enjoying sushi since its introduction to the Philadelphia area. I first became addicted to it upon visiting my sister in LA where sushi restaurants were everywhere. Coming back home, like an addict looking to score his next fix, the only relief available was a place on Penn's campus. And when I would rush down to West Philly to quell my jones only to find that I had arrived just a little too late, I would gnash my teeth, howl at the moon, and convulse in spasms of withdrawal.
It's been quite a few years since then and the Philadelphia sushi scene is much improved. I've eaten in some very nice establishments in my hometown as well as NYC, LA and oddly-enough, Salt Lake City ( it was pretty amazing). But tonight, after some research, I decided to give Bluefin in East Norriton a try.
I have just one word. Go. I'm a purist. The quality of the fish is superb, the preparation is amazing. You can have the best fish in the world but if isn't sliced at the proper thickness, the proper angle, and the proper direction with respect to the grain of the flesh, you have expensive bait.
Chef Kim and his staff know their art. It was absolutely amazing. Everything we ordered, and brother did we order too much (I doubt the doggie bag will survive the night), was a bite-sized blessing. Do yourself a favor, refrain from excessive tampering (don't drown it in soy or paste it with wasabi) and just put it in your mouth, close your eyes, and savor.
The staff is very friendly and efficient. The atmosphere modest and relaxing. You could (and we did) drive by this place in Northtowne Plaza a hundred times without ever noticing it but, once you've dined there, you won't be able...
Read moreMy wife and I went here for dinner and had a great experience. Two things right off the bat - one, you should make a reservation because this place is packed for dinner, and rightfully so. And two, it’s BYOB, so if you’re looking to have a few drinks with dinner bring whatever you’d like. My wife and I didn’t know either of these until we walked in. The staff was very friendly and explained that they were fully booked for the night but they might be able to squeeze us in if we didn’t mind waiting. We were in no rush so we went to grab some beer and came back and waited until two seats opened up at the sushi counter. As we were waiting, we struck up conversation with a few people who were either leaving or waiting to pick up take out, and every single person said “wait it out, trust me it’ll be worth it”. They were right; I’m glad we waited it out, it was indeed well worth it. We ordered the chefs pork dumplings and the tako carpaccio right away, and followed it up with three or four delicious rolls of sushi - each with their own signature taste and texture. The chefs on the other side of the counter offered great recommendations and general conversation without missing a beat on preparing the next dish in front of them. 10/10, fantastic experience. BlueFin will become part of our regularly...
Read moreI just had a Phenomenal dinner here! All the ingredients were fresh, the presentations were gorgeous (I wish I'd taken photos!) and the flavors of each dish were perfectly balanced. The Seaweed Salad was a really nice sized portion. The MVP Roll was a delicious combo of heat and acid, perfectly complemented by the creamy avo and fresh green garnish. The Baked Eggplant small plate was without a doubt one of the best things I've ever eaten! I love trying new things and I had no idea what to expect. It was so rich and savory/sweet it was almost like a desert! The presentation made it look like a giant fig, and I could taste the fig essence in the sauce it was baked in. And the way it was baked made the eggplant flesh so decadent, almost the texture of bone marrow. I can't wait to eat here again! I also like that its a BYOB. My entire meal was only $38 + tip!
*One suggestion: service was overall good, but it was a busy night and they only staffed one server, one runner and a busser to cover the entire dining room. They were all working very hard, but a second server...
