Applebee's Grill + Bar — Restaurant in Elizabeth City

EVEN THOUGH THE STAFF WAS NICE, MY EXPERIENCE WAS HORRIBLE. I UNDERSTAND IT IS A PANDEMIC GOING ON AND THE VERY NICE HOST ASK ME TO WAIT IN THE HOST AREA UNTIL THEY CLEANED MY TABLE. THEN ANOTHER STAFF TOLD ME TO WAIT OUTSIDE . I DID AND I WASN'T UPSET BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THINGS ARE DIFFERENT BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC. BUT WHEN THEY CAME TO GET ME FOR MY TABLE I SAW GUEST WAITING IN THE HOST AREA. NOW I WAS FURIOUS BUT I DIDN'T LET THAT DESTROY THE NIGHT. THEN AS I WAS SEATED, I HAD TO WAIT AT LEAST ANOTHER 30 MINUTES JUST TO GET MY ORDER TAKEN. THE NICE MALE HOST WAS SWEET HE DID GET ME MY DRINKS BUT FORGOT THE LEMON TO MY TEA. I DIDN'T LET THAT GET TO ME BECAUSE HE WAS NICE ENOUGH TO SEE THAT THE WAITER WAS TAKING TOO LONG AND HE WAS PROBABLY HELPING HIM OUT. THE TEA WAS BASICALLY BROWN WATER. THEN FINALLY AFTER ANOTHER 16 MINUTES MY WAITER COMES AND TAKES MY ORDER. I WAITED A DECENT AMOUNT OF TIME FOR MY APPETIZER BUT WHEN THE SERVER GAVE ME MY FOOD SHE BASICALLY THREW IT AT ME. I DIDN'T HAVE ANY SILVERWARE TO EAT WITH SO I USED MY HANDS. IT WAS WINGS SO I DIDN'T SWEAT THAT BUT I DIDN'T HAVE ANY NAPKINS. MY WAITER WAS ONLY PAYING ATTENTION TO THE TABLES WITH THE GIRLS THE ONE IN FRONT AND BACK OF ME. I WATCHED HIM CHECK ON THEM CONTINUOUSLY THROUGH OUT THE NIGHT BUT NEVER EVEN REFILLED MY DRINKS. THEN I NOTICED THAT IT WAS TAKING A WHILE FOR THE FOOD. BUT AT LEAST IT WAS HOT AND VERY GOOD. I ASKED MY WAITER FOR MEXIRANCH WHICH I NEVER RECEIVED AND SO I COULDN'T REALLY FINISH MY FOOD. IT TOOK WILLIAM SO LONG TO COME BACK TO CHECK ON ME AND MY DAUGHTER I WAS GETTING UPSET BUT I DID NOT WANT TO CAUSE A SCENE BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT MY DAUGHTER TO WITNESS ME ACT THAT WAY. I ASKED FOR A NEW DRINK NEVER RECEIVED. I ASKED FOR DESSERT NEVER EVEN PUT THAT IN. MY TO GO ORDER FOR MY BOYFRIEND WAS OK. I CAN'T BELIEVE WILLIAM GOT THAT RIGHT BECAUSE IT SEEMS AS THOUGH NOTHING ELSE HE DID FOR MY TABLE WAS RIGHT ALL NIGHT. MAYBE IF HE WASN'T GRINNING SO HARD IN THE OTHER YOUNG LADIES FACES SO HARD HE COULD HAVE GIVEN ALL HIS TABLES AN EQUAL AMOUNT OF ATTENTION MY DAUGHTER IS ONLY 5 AND SHE KNEW THAT HE WASN'T DOING A GOOD JOB. I WILL SAY THIS . THE STAFF IS NICE BUT NOT ATTENTIVE AND THEY DO NOT LISTEN WELL I GUESS THEY THOUGHT THAT BECAUSE IT WAS ME AND MY DAUGHTER THAT I DIDN'T HAVE MONEY AND I WASN'T GOING TO TIP ANYWAY BUT I TIP BASED UPON THE QUALITY OF SERVICE WHICH WAS A 0 OUT OF 5. Completely disappointed in the management at this location. Our server was new and was struggling to get things right. We waited a long time for my wife’s salad which should have come out ahead of her entree, but I guess another server tried to help her by bringing my wife’s salad AND entree out at the same time. She asked if everything was ok and I mentioned that I was still waiting on my entree. A few minutes later our original server came out and asked the same thing and I had to remind her I was waiting on my entree and I pointed out the fact that my wife was already served. She went back to tell the manager and about 10 minutes later she returned to apologize and say they were just cooking mine. Mine arrived after my wife had finished her dinner. My wife asked to add a desert at this point which was forgotten. The bill was finally brought out and had an erroneous charge for the salad which was supposed to be one of two sides that came with the meal. We had her take it back to be corrected and when she returned, she said it couldn’t be fixed according to her manager but that we could now have the (forgotten) desert for free. The food was good; we had no complaints there. The young waitress was very nice and sympathetic to our situation and we did tip her better than 20% as we understand mistakes happen. Our complaint is with the manager who sat at the bar the entire time we were there yaking with whoever was sitting next to her and totally ignoring what was happening out on the floor! She never came by to apologize or offer any amends yet she knew everything got screwed up. She left that poor young waitress who was still in a learning curve out to dry! Very unprofessional! Coming to this location is usually a hit or miss, but tonight earned a review. I went to the bar to get a steak on a Sunday night, because most places in this area closed at 9. I ordered a capt/coke, house Caesar salad, bourbon steak m/r, and a desert brownie. During this time the music was blasting so loud throughout the restaurant it sounded like a rave some main character on a Disney show snuck out to. I was relieved to find that my Caesar dressing had salad under it. The steak was cooked perfectly, and the brownie was swimming in ice cream when it came to me. The big issue was with the bartender manager combo. First sign of concern was when she handed the customer next to me a tall boy with a 4 inch foam lid. He asked if she could get rid of it and she was struggling with it so much that he had to coach her through a decent pour. When my check came I realized I was charged for a double in my drink (def a single) and she insisted that it is the customers responsibility to notify them they just want a single. She went to the manager to remove it and the manager even got snarky with me because I “should have told them I just wanted a single”. I coached them both that it is the servers responsibility to ask if the customer wants a double. Captain and coke is my go to drink when I go to a bar and for them to say they gave me a double was laughable and I never had to make it clear that my small rum and coke is just a shot.
