When I first entered, there were four or five people seated and a small gathering at the cash register. I stood there looking around for a few minutes as the person at the register was hanging out and casually talking. Finally a nice young man greeted me and offered me the choice between a booth or a table.
After choosing a booth, I was seated at the end, just across from the kitchen doors. I was handed the menu and asked what I would like to drink. After looking briefly at the menu, I stated to the waiter that the menu was completely new. I will admit that I was a little taken aback by the fact that he did not offer to help me sort out the new menu.
After looking through, I decided on the $21 14 Oz steak dinner and chose the Mac n cheese as a side. I was then shown where the salad bar was and told it was included in the meal. When I walked over, initially I was overwhelmed with all the options only to find that a lot of the pasta salads and the chicken salad looked old and slightly dried out in parts. There were bits of food particles mixed about between the tongs. When I glanced over at the soups stations; the (I think) Chicken fajita soup looked way too thick and slightly dry at the edges as well. I made a small plate. The eggs tasted like icky mop water, tomatoes a little sour and the soup very gummy and thick. When my steak came out, he immediately started to apologize and explain that the Chef cooked a rib eye thinking it was the Steak I ordered and tried to argue with the waiter about the difference in Steak’s.
He asked me if it was okay that he give me the rib eye and I said Sure as long as I didn’t get charged the price for the other Steak. He was very sweet and appreciative. The steak (despite it not being the one I wanted), was excellent. Cook with a nice char on it and that Smokey grill taste. The Mac-n-cheese was very thick and not as good.
Something that was slightly concerning was that two men came out at different points with gloves handling Yellow cones and touching the doors and counter at different points with the same gloves on and proceeded to go back o to the kitchen. The man with the overalls was identified as the dishwasher. When I asked about the man in the black jean shorts, there wasn’t an answer. I did see him through the double doors handling a plate that appeared to have food some minutes later, but I cannot say that it was a dish with leftover food needing to be washed or a plate that had just been prepared. What was noticeable was that he had the same gloves on as it had the same dark marking on the right hand.
The head waitress and two other waiters did an excellent job of covering each other and communicating. They were vigilant of of People coming In and needing to check out in addition to clearing the tables as they emptied. As far as that was concerned, I would give them a strong 5. The head waitress was met with a tyrannous group of young men speaking about her in an appropriate manner. She never missed a beat with them. She handled it very professionally. The customer service is excellent.
Update: as I was walking towards the bathroom before checking out, I noticed the same man in the black jean shorts was mopping the floor in between the bathrooms. He was very nice, but again, he still had on the same blue gloves as there was the male on the right glove. I went to use the bathroom and noticed the small intake vent above the handicap stall very dirty. It was completely covered in dust, and the bathroom was extremely cold. I cleaned the toilet then used it.
As I was walking out of the bathroom, I noticed the same man who was just mopping the floor now at the salad bar pulling out trays of food and Saran wrapping them to store away with the exact same gloves. When I mentioned it to the waiter checking me out, he immediately got nervous and said he would mention it to the man. I told him that it was a direct violation of the Department of Health and he scrambled to finish my check, so that I...
Read moreFour of us traveled about 45 minutes to try the Exeter Family Restaurant. We had read the reviews; both positive and negative and decided it was worth a shot. It was a busy Friday night, the place was packed but we were seated rather quickly. Our server came to our table seven minutes after being seated, not unreasonable for a busy diner. Three of us ordered entrees; Chicken Croquettes, Meatloaf, and Pork Chops. All came with a salad and soup bar. Though we weren't told to go help ourselves to the salad bar by our server, I think it's a given to do-so off we went. The positive of the dining experience= the soup and salad bar were well stocked, and fresh! The greens were as I would have them at home. The soup choices of seafood bisque and green filled pepper were pretty tasty. Don't waste calories on the awful pre-packaged roll. I should have stopped at the soup and salad bar as my pork chops not only were unbelievably over-grilled but, also absolutely off-flavor. What was that awful taste??? I chiseled off two bites just to make sure they were inedible, and yes, totally awful chops. My friend who had the meatloaf was also disappointed, it was cold and strangely hard. It's meatloaf. You should be able to cut through it with a fork. Not his. The Croquettes looked good and my friend liked them a great deal. The other guy at our table had the patty melt. Hmmm. I think maybe his sandwich was done first and sat in the natural juices of the onions. He said the flavor wasn't bad but the bottom of the sandwich was wet from the onion juice and it fell apart as he was eating it. His fries were cold and they sat uneaten on his plate. When we were done with what we did eat our server came back to check on us and, I told him that I couldn't eat the chops and wanted them off the bill, which he did, explaining that I would be charged for the salad bar. That was totally acceptable. Other than the food, the parking lot had broken glass near our car and wasn't very clean. The chairs we sat on had tears, and there isn't any ambiance. None. If the food was as good as the salad bar it would easily had been a four...
Read moreI live in Exeter, and this family restaurant is the best diner I've ever, ever eaten at. The menu selection is so extensive. They will always be able to satisfy anyone's food preferences. It's just totally super good food. Can't say enough about how hard the waitresses work. They make sure all their tables are taken care of and have everything they need/want. If you haven't eaten at the Exeter Family Restaurant yet, you don't know what you're missing. Went there again on April 24th with my husband. I had the BLT with a bag of chips, I didn't want any soup which also came with my sandwich. My husband had a bacon only omelet with hashbrowns. It was so big it took up 1/2 the plate. It was so thin we didn't think it was folded like an omelet should be, but it was, just extremely thin. But very good. My BLT was awesome. I had it on wheat bread. Actually I could only eat half, and also took bag of chips home too. But, I just had to get their rice pudding with whipped cream. OMG! I know, I shouldn't have, but it's just so good. Lol. If you've never stopped in to Exeter Diner you have no idea what you missing. What are you waiting for?? Won't let you down. UPDATE: Still awesome food. We got there a little before 5 and wasn't that crowded but as we were getting ready to leave oh boy there was a line forming to get in. They hired a lot of new waitresses because all the times I have eaten at that time I never saw these young ladies. Out waitress was awesome 👍. Great service. Checked on us to see if everything was fine and kept up with our drink refills. So our new waitress, new to my husband and I, was great 😃. We'll see you again in the...
