This is an update to a mostly positive review I wrote a year ago. Things have certainly changed since then.
Iam a pescatarian and I buy more fish in a year than most people do in ten (about 5 lbs. of fish per week). I've also eaten in some of the best seafood restaurants in Manhattan. And I speak from 35 years experience.
I wish I could write a positive review here as this business is in the town I live in (Fairfield), the location is convenient, and the selection wide. But there are multiple reasons to find fault here. My first gripe is that the selling prices have gone from absurd to ridiculous. Here are some examples with comparable purchase prices at other fishmongers: $60 per pond for stone crab claws at Nordic were $38 per pound at Paganos in SONO. Grey sole at Nordic: $28.99 per pound; the same fish: $17.95 at Paganos. Two pound Iobsters: $22.00 per pond at Nordic were $17.95 at Paganos. I could go on and on, but this is likely the most expensive retail seafood store in Fairfield County. (Are Fairfielders rich and careless, or are they unsophisticated?)
Just yesterday I was told by one of the owners to purchase some frozen Langostinos---purportedly a deal at $30 for a pound and a half. It turned out that they had been frozen for over two years and their expiration date was more than 30 days past. I cooked them anyway, and they were tasteless.
Last, there is almost an air of desperation on behalf of the owners: they exude a need for money that is palpable, and a desire to sell at any cost. It's unpleasant.
Experienced fish buyers in Fairfield County purchase their seafood at reasonable and reliable fishmongers. I can recommend three: Paganos in SoNo; Fjord in Westport (while also pricey, less so than Nordic), and Superior Seafood in Westport. If you have money to burn, go to Nordic. But...
Read moreMy family and I ordered 5 fish and chips advertised for $14.95, as displayed on both the board and online menu. However, we were charged $16.95 without any prior indication of the extra cost. When we raised the issue, the staff dismissed it, citing outdated boards. The order was already placed and she took the money so we felt bad just leaving. The least she could have done is honor the price on the board after failing to mention the up charges. This is how business gets resolved literally everywhere. This lack of transparency is concerning and disappointing. As visitors from Jersey, it left us with a negative impression of the business during our first visit to...
Read moreMy wife and I eat sushi weekly and just got back from a trip to Japan. Been meaning to try this place for a long time given how highly rated it is around town and was WILDLY disappointed. Got three trays of take out sushi on a Friday evening. The fish was clearly very far from fresh given how strong the fish smell was and most rolls had tons of rice with minimal fish. Pretty average experience but then when it came to the edomae style sushi we actually had to spit out the tuna nigiri and feared we’d get sick from it.
Ive heard the place is very busy so maybe all the good stuff goes early - would not advise for dinner! We’ll be...
