I love finding a local hidden gem, so hidden that some of the other locals might not know about! This popular spot is hiding behind a Dairy Queen, and has that very cozy, friendly, home-y feel to it. A great spot for breakfast and brunch, especially if you like those home cooked or diner-like food and atmosphere. Inside is not very large, and with its popularity, it gets busy very fast.
They are not fancy, very unassuming, no-frills kind of place. The only fancy things they have are the variety of baked goods and desserts in/on the window display. They all looked really good!
For breakfast, we ordered two kinds of Eggs Benedict, French Toast, and a Breakfast Sandwich. They were all very tasty, especially the Portuguese Cacoilha Benedict with marinated pork! But the French Toast was made with rather thinly sliced bread, therefore they were a bit on the mushy side... We also added an order of cranberry muffin. The waitress asked if we wanted it toasted, and upon request, she cut them in two, and toasted them to perfection. It was soooo delicious!!! Buttery, fluffy, flavorful…one of the best muffins ever!!!
The service was very nice and friendly, but remember, they have “No substitution” rule, and they are cash only. My husband says “all the best places are cash only” – you will be the judge. And if you can’t make it there in the morning, don’t worry. They serve breakfast all day! Read my full review of the restaurant and food on my food blog,...
Read moreAfter searching for a solid early morning breakfast spot in Falmouth, Mary Ellen’s Portuguese Bakery had all of the requirements with amazing sounding food, opening very early and close to where we were staying.
The location is a little obscured by the Dairy Queen which Mary Ellen’s shares the building. The restaurant space is an average size with a small section to buy the bakery items. The bakery breads and sweets looked amazing. We bought some Portuguese Sweet bread to take home.
When arrived before 8am, we avoided any crowds or line to wait. We were sat immediately. It is a very relaxed local and homey place. The waitress and staff know the regulars and welcome newcomers. We were a party of four so we ordered quite a few items. We had Eggs Benedict ($9.25), Portuguese Cacoilha Benedict ($11.25), French Toast ($5.75), French Toast with bacon ($7.50) and Linguiça, Egg & Cheese sandwich ($4.50).
The Portuguese Cacoila Benedict was the real star of the meal. Mary Ellen’s has specials so I would recommend going with any of the specials that they have.
If you would like to enjoy a local spot, I would highly recommend Mary Ellen’s Portuguese Bakery. Next time that I am on the Cape, I look forward...
Read moreAll my years living in Falmouth, I've never noticed this Bakery since it's been hiding in Dairy Queen's shadow. My first visit was with some friends. It’s not the prettiest location- the inside feels small and the furniture is rickety. Nothing’s wrong with that of course; the little imperfections make the diner feel old school and homey. The waitress managing all the tables seemed very experienced; she was was super kind, fun, and offered quality service. The menu had lots of amazing options. It is one of the only places in town where you can order breakfast later in the day. I tried the Portuguese toast, and it was marvelous. My omelet was hot and steaming. I thought the potatoes were a bit on the dry side. All of us were very satisfied afterwards. We paid in cash, which is a necessary part of the quality side-of-the-road diner experience. No complaints whatsoever. I would absolutely recommend and I...
