Drive by the place constantly, as we live nearby and finally decided to try it. The decor was really nice, and the staff was very friendly. Went on a Thursday night and they were actually pretty busy but we were seated right away. The chips and salsa were decent, and we liked their queso. My husband ordered steak tacos, which is his go to dish at Mexican restaurants, he did like them, but they weren't his absolute favorite from the many other restaurants we've tried. And although the portion of steak was generous they were actually really messy on the plate. The presentation was terrible, as if everything was just thrown on the plate. Maybe since they were a little busy, they were trying to get everything out quick. But, it wasn't like the place was full, and I'm sure they have busier days. My plate came the same way, messy. I ordered enchiladas, not a normal order for me, but wanted to try something different. When I got them I completely forgot what I'd ordered since it looked like a huge mess on the plate. They tasted ok, but wouldn't be something I would order again. Overall, we would go again and just try other options. Plus its convenient and there's decent parking for a downtown location.
New location---- tried today(Easter Sunday,) really nice decor on the inside and I really like that there is more natural light. They weren't busy today at all but our apps came before our drinks, which made my husband mad. The queso is still good and the chips and salsa are as well. The steak tacos got better from the old location, my husband really liked them. I ordered a burrito which was very good as well. Downside of this visit, the hostess was really unfriendly and made it seem like a big deal when we asked for a highchair for my 8 month old. Maybe she was in a bad mood from working on a holiday? Also our server seemed overwhelmed even with just a couple tables. And again the restuarant wasn't busy at all, but we didn't even have a chance to ask for anything as she never came to check on us. We even went to the host stand to pay the bill as she never brought it to us. So food seemed to improve but the staff did not, so I'll keep the rating at a 4 as I'm sure we will still go again as the location is...
Read moreMy wife and I went there for dinner last night and it was not a resounding experience. When we walked into the front door the lobby was empty with only a coupe paying for their meal. There was no one taking care of them and no one at the reception stand. I should say that the place was moderately busy. We stood there for a while with no response to us or the other couple. Finally an employee approached and took care of the paying couple, still no acknowledgement of us. After a few more minutes went by the receptionist finally came up and took us to table. The receptionist literally drop the menus on the table and walked away. No waiting for us to sit down and hand the menus to us, like almost every good restaurant will do, it was like we had bothered her for being there.
After that it took a little while for a server to show up but when she did she was very polite and professional. We ordered drinks and the server brought my wife’s drink but did not bring mine. I thought that to be odd. The serve said she still had to get mine from the bar. She provide us with salsa and chips but the salsa seemed like they went over to Walmart and bought some jarred salsa and the chips were stale. The server came back with our meals but still no drink for me. She did finally bring me my drink.
My meal was the Burrito Maya and it was more beans and rice then anything else. There was a small burrito filled with beef underneath all the beans and rice. There was some lettuce and sour cream up top to. It was not bad but not the best. My Wife had the Fiesta taco salad and she said it was good. So that was a plus.
Out of the our experience I can’t say it was the worst but not the best either. So 3 stars is all we can give. I really do believe that he management should look into the way people are greeted and brought to the table. I thought that was just...
Read moreFor a couple of months now, they've been unable to sell alcohol. We went there for dinner last night. I asked our server about the liquor license issue... he said they fully lost it but didn't go into detail. I also learned during the course of that conversation that from his understanding, they are actually closing their doors for good... he said next week would be their last week open. Such a profound loss for our area. It's been a local favorite for over a decade! It will be greatly missed. I'm still hoping for a miracle, but preparing to have to find a new 3rd place for my family and friends.
Original Review: My family and I have been going to Riviera Maya for years, back when they were at their original location! It's a family favorite. We probably go at least twice a month, sometimes once per week. The staff know us. Their customer service is second to none! The food is delicious... they will let you customize anything. I'm gf and at times even when I was doing keto, they were incredibly flexible in letting me order the way I needed. Their queso blanco and salsa are always a crowd pleaser!!! One visit, just after "Día de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead), our server surprised me by giving me a box and said "this is for you because you're one of our favorite regular customers"... it was a painted mug in the shape of sugar skull. It's beautiful and really made us feel valued! I regularly recommend Riviera Maya to friends, family and coworkers. Just remember, a one off bad experience can be had at any establishment once in a while... this restaurant has a 99.9% success rating in my book. The only time I really have issues or feel their customer service isn't top notch is with the hostess/checkout stand. The wait staff are always...
