There are two Japanese steak houses in Florence Alabama and the two are literally within a football field distance of each other. Ichiban is the newest to the area of the two between UMI and ichiban but there are some stark differences.
If you have one person you can only get hibachi where you set at the table at UMI as ichiban's forces you to set at a booth and will not serve you hibachi for one person. Regarding the lunch portion servings the servings at ichiban are smaller and not as tasty, in my own opinion. The steak I got was extremely tough even though I had it cooked medium rare. It actually was cooked more medium to medium well. I also had shrimp which was excellent and about as good as could be expected. The shrimp was also large and in my opinion the best value.
One other major difference is at UMI you get soup and salad with your lunch selection but at ichibans you get neither soup nor salad but have to pay extra for either so that adds an extra $1 for soup or a $1.50 for salad to the price. Ichiban's menu prices are lower than at UMI however the extra quantity you get and the additional soup and salad makes UMI The better value for your money.
Both restaurants serve similar selections however the taste of the fried rice at ichiban's was not near as good as it was at UMI. There also did not appear to be much egg in the rice at ichiban's whereas at UMI you do have egg mixed in with the fried rice and it is a noticeable amount.
Ichiban's is a good place to eat and the food is tasty but the quantity of the meat portions could be larger but offsetting that the amount of fried rice you get is more than you get at UMI. Both Japanese restaurants are good however I think ichiban's could stand some improvement in some of their areas as I do feel it a mistake that they eliminated the soup and or salad with the selection. Even before they eliminated the soup and\or salad they allowed you only one either soup or salad but not both. Over the year UMI has increased their menu prices and Ichiban's has maintained their menu prices.
One additional thing I did like about ichiban's is at each booth they had a bottle of hand soap which in this day and time is a welcome addition to the...
Read moreOnline the hours said that they closed at 9:30. I pulled up about 9:03 after being thoroughly excited about what I was going to order when I pulled up the open sign was lit up and me and my wife are super excited. All of that excitement came crashing down into a soul crushing disappointment when as soon as I open my car door and looked up the open sign that was just lit up like a Christmas tree had gone dark and was off.. I walked up to the window where you can see in where the employees are, and asked the gentleman if they were closed for some reason, and he looked at me and just gave me the indication that yes they are now closed even though I watch them watch me pull in to the parking lot and was given no indication a reason to believe that we were not going to enjoy a wonderful meal that we were thoroughly excited about . But before I let it get to me, I went online and found the rice box gave them a call and placed the order with them instead. I don’t typically give reviews I don’t believe in reviews because I’ve worked many places and I know how the whole review system works and the majority of people don’t leave reviews unless they’re bad or you have a bad experience in the very many people that have a great experience typically don’t leave on, unless you ask them to or bribe them to, so anyway, there’s that . Thank you so much....
Read moreExcellent atmosphere and hands down the best service I've had in Florence. Which is saying a lot considering how excellent the service had been all around town. The menu has classic Japanese dishes like katsu, udon, soba, miso, hibachi/tepanyaki, gyoza etc. It also had some very creative and locally inspired sushi rolls as well as incredible bento boxes. I was hoping to see either a traditional or an inspired take on ramen on the menu, but the complexity of the other selections more than makes up for the absence of ramen. I've sampled the yaki-soba, seafood fried rice, gyoza, the carousel roll, the surf and turf roll, and the Auburn roll, so far. Every dish has a uniquely crafted flavor that is absolutely irresistible. If I reviewed each one here, I'd need my own web page! I have grabbed a couple pics, though. Suffice to say that if you're in florence and want Japanese cuisine, this establishment has my highest...
