For history sake, wife & I had to eat at the Original on their final night. Before commenting on food got to comment on the shutdown of the oldest restaurant in FTW,,the one that has not only history but great atmosphere. Shame on both the restaurant and building owner for failing to reach a new lease agreement. I find it hard to believe that the owner is going to turn around and lease to a new restaurant and also to the restaurant for being agreeable to pay a little more rent because of inflation. Learned a long time ago that when it comes to money: a little of something (rent $) is better than no money at all, not to mention how bad your customers wanted you to stay open at this historic location. In my opinion your food is not good enough; the reason I came was the memories. Again shame on both of you for killing a little FTW history; especially the restaurant thinking all customers will follow them to their sister Northside restaurant. We won’t follow you! Although your cheese enchiladas rice and beans are very good the beef & chicken ones are average at best. Your guacamole and nachos are below average. If I ever go back we will never order these two items again. Years ago this place l had the best in town, not now. But the chips and salsa and real butter was/are very, very good.
But the real reason I probably won’t ever go back to the relatively new restaurant on the Northside is because their/your prices are so high! Even my wife commented on how expensive it was/is. This place is good but not great in my opinion. There are several N side Mexican food restaurants that again in my opinion far better than the Original and far less expensive that have great atmosphere too. Am I glad we went in the last night; yes I am. Thanks for the memories, it was bittersweet. Decades full of them but no real reason for me to start new memories at its sister restaurant. I didn’t grow up on N Main, I grew up in the Camp Bowie area. That’s why I came back tonight; it sure wasn’t because of the food. Each time I pass this historic place in the future I will just shake my head and think that something could have been done to...
Read moreFist time to ever eat here. I had heard about this place and how great the food was. I was also told the beer-Rita was the best around. When we got there we noticed the patio dinning so we opted to sit outside. It was not busy at all. It took a bit to get drinks and chips out to us, but not a deal breaker. When we ordered our drinks we also ordered a beer-Rita. When all the drinks came out the beer -Rita was not one of them. We just thought ok well it has to come from the bar and it will be out shortly. We sat and ate chips and queso for about 10 minutes then the waiter came back to take our order.no beer-Rita in hand. So we ordered our food and asked about the beer-Rita waiter said let me go check on it. Never saw him again until our food came out. I had ordered 3 cheese enchiladas with fajita beef on top. It wasn’t on the menu but the waiter said yea sure we can do that, people do it all the time. I noticed when I got my food there was no rice or beans on the plate. So I figured they just forgot them. Anyways the food was really good. We got the bill and to my surprise the “$” it showed on their ratings was not any where near the “$$$” that was on the bill. 1 child’s plate, 1 taco plate, 1 chicken enchilada plate and the “pick 3” that I had ordered with the beef fajita on top, iced teas and the beer-Rita that never showed up. 90 bucks. I was charged 13.95 for 3 cheese enchiladas nothing else but on the plate. They charged another 10.95 for the maybe 1/2 cup of beef they threw on top. So for 3 enchaladas with fajita meat on top was 24.90. Wow. The food was good but not that damn good. The other plates were pretty reasonably priced I guess. 14.00 for the taco plate which was 2 soft tacos rice and beans. Needless to say their ratings should be “$$$” not the “$” it shows. We will not be returning to eat...
Read moreWe went here with the expectation that the food would be somewhat authentic. The restaurant did have the feel of a traditional Mexican restaurant, and the service was always very friendly. However, and I almost feel bad writing this review, the food was neither traditional nor good. Let me begin with the chips and dip. The chips themselves were fine, however the dip was either picante sauce, or made to resemble it, which was very, very disappointing. The house margaritas (we ordered 2), were a mixture of too much salt, a subpar margarita mixer, and a slight dash of tequila (and I mean SLIGHT). The food was visually unappealing (not sure how else to say this). We all ordered different things and each of us were fairly unimpressed. Perhaps the worst was my dish, a burrito. The flavor was simply refried beans, nothing else. To my surprise, that's all that was inside except for a few slivers of chicken. Even Taco Bell, the destroyer of true Mexican cuisine, has better tasting burritos.. by a lot... My friends didn't fare much better. Probably the strangest moment was when we noticed something weird about the guacamole.. It seemed... "fluffy" and a bit pale. It tasted diluted with barely any resemblance to genuine guacamole, almost as if cut with something such as corn starch. Overall, we were all very disappointed and vowed not to return. I believe they attempt to appeal to an older, white population with their complete lack of any spices (the kind waitress confirmed nothing in the menu was spicy), lack of truly Mexican ingredients, and very disappointing margaritas. We rated it 3/10 while leaving - We start @ 5/10 and then add or subtract - - +1 Service, +1 Good happy hour prices, -1 margaritas, -1 chips and dip, -1 main meals, -1...
