I was sad to see the former Las Tortugas in this location close down in favor of a different place. They were one of the only good taquerias in all of southern Colorado. But I wanted to get Tacos El Amigo a try, and I'm glad I did.
The dining room at Tacos El Amigo #3 is a vast improvement over the former Las Tortugas. It's still in a gas station, but they have real furniture now - comfortable wooden booths and tables. It feels like an actual restaurant. I also love the jukebox playing appropriate music. From the looks alone, this is a real Mexican restaurant, and not the fake deep-fried-covered-in-gravy ambiance one normally finds in southern Colorado.
I'm surprised at the negative comments from others about the aqua fresca. Mine tasted really great. And I love the free refills.
The menu is decent. I will need to come back here several times to get a good sampling. * Today's review is therefore only preliminary. * I'll update once I try more food.
Today I had a torta pastor. And it was... decent. Not as good as Las Tortugas. But, somehow, a bit more approachable. If you don't eat Mexican food that often and need a torta that feels more like a regular sandwich, you may find this pleasing. That describes a lot of folks around here, so I have to say it's appropriate for the area. Still way better than most places in the region, but not quite as good as what was here before.
But, I gotta give this place an A+ for service presentation. My sandwich came with a blistered jalapeno on the side, and three kinds of sauces - without my having to ask. And it was all brought to me at my table, instead of me having to wait around the counter.
OVERALL: The service, ambiance, and presentation make this place somewhere between 4 and 5 stars. My torta was good, but not as good as I hoped for.
THIS IS A PRELIMINARY REVIEW. I can't wait to come back and try the rest...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOnline ordering was seamless, order was ready in less than 15 minutes estimated time. Ordered 2 items only eaten 1 so far and wow!𤯠love this place already. Chicken quesadillas is a meal in itself for sure, generous with both the chicken and the cheese. Love the cheese not being cheddar or some other generic American thing, white salty cheeses always pair so much better with chicken than cheddar in my opinion. feta is always awesome with chicken too. Salsa is a good solid medium spice, Iāll ask if they have hotter options next time.
I am new to the area and it looks like Las Tortugas is too. Iāll be growing larger along with you for a while I hope. Thank you for being worth every penny. Excited to sample more of your flavors asap.
I ate half the quesadillas before stopping for a photo because I knew I must appreciate this...
