Deli News is as close to being in Brooklyn and Manhattan as it gets here in the metroplex. Tried so many other places in the past but none could achieve what Deli News has done. Went there last week for the first time. It was so good, I came back today to try the king of NY sammies -- the Reuben.
The sandwiches are reminiscent of those wonderful NY Jewish delis every neighborhood had with fresh, tasty stacks of cold cuts, toppings and cradled with rye bread that's the staple of any true NY deli sandwich. These sammies are good.
I've had the roast beef with swiss on rye -- absolutely delish. The Reuben, oh that Reuben. It was spectacular with a generous mound of corned beef and sauerkraut. That juicy meat, the tartness of the sauerkraut and that distinct flavor of the rye bread brought me back in time. Only thing I wish they did with the Reuben is put the dressing on the sandwich instead of ion the side n a container to spread yourself. To me, it's no longer a sandwich at that point, it's a DIY project. You should always be able to grab any sammie at the counter and eat it on the go. Dressing is killer too, by the way - good job on the dressing, guys.
Can't leave out the fact that in typical NY fashion, they give you a side of pickles with that genuine NY Jewish deli taste. Only thing missing was someone in the background saying, "How you doin'?" If you've never had a NY deli pickle, you'll experience it here.
One thing I loved but never really had in a NY deli is Deli News' onion rings. I think this is one thing for sure that's a signature thing I'll always associate with Deli News. Their onion rings are incredible. The fries? They're good but, fuggetaboutit. Trust me. The rings, get the rings.
The matzo ball soup is terrific, too. Broth has a wonderful flavor that would make my buddies' moms jealous. They also have a great selection of deserts. For those of you from NY, they have the BLACK AND WHITE COOKIES. Once more, they have the BLACK AND WHITE COOKIES guys. Danishes are to die for, too. Haven't tried the cheesecake and I'll do that next time.
Staff was incredibly friendly, which actually isn't typical of a NY deli but, nevertheless, I certainly appreciated it. If the people behind the counter were yelling across orders and bantering with each other, I'd believe I was teleported to one of the boroughs of NY. Just sayin'.
If you enjoy a good sammie, try out Deli News. And if you're like me and miss NY delis, don't waste your time settling for less. Check them out. You'll see what I mean. I'll stop here. Made myself hungry writing this review and have...
Read moreWe moved to Frisco recently, and stumbled on The Deli News for lunch one day. I expected the type of “deli” that you find in all the chains in every city; but this, somehow, was the real thing!
The owner, Jeff, is standing behind the register all the time they are open, and is always affable and pleasant. The servers are likewise very pleasant and efficient, and the young man who cleans up each table as people leave, is extremely conscientious, leaving each space spotless. I have stopped going to some eateries just because the hit-or-miss “cleaning” of each table leaves it wet, rank, and smelling sour. Not this place…it is always perfectly kept.
Then there is the food! In my view, this is the best lunch to be had in this area. The sandwiches are huge, piled high with whatever you have chosen from the menu. My husband continues to sample different sandwiches each time we come in, and is always enthralled. Even their fries are outstanding!
I, however, stick to what I first ordered, and it is always, always, perfect, fresh, tasty, and literally melts in my mouth. With their freshly baked New York bagels and breads, you can’t go wrong. My very favorite is the bagel with cream cheese, lox, cucumbers, and capers. All their products are flown in from NYC fresh every day…and Jeff goes to the airport to safely pick them up…every single day! I could go on and on about the Nova Lox smoked salmon…this practically melts on my tongue…flavorful, and lots of it. It is consistently delicious every single time. The freshly baked bagels are just like you get in NY delis…perfect.
Then there is the cheesecake…the best anywhere around! A tall, generous slice of this amazing cheesecake easily satisfies us both when we share a piece. This is definitely a taste of NYC, and maybe better.
I would love to work through their huge menu, but I can’t resist my favorite of cream cheese, bagel, lox, and capers each time.
This is a tightly run place; the owner is on site all the time, and keeps a tight and tidy place. Due to the uncanny consistency in the food (preparation and presentation), it is hard for me to believe that there is ever any change in staff. That, in itself, is remarkable.
These people are dedicated to the quality of their food, and don’t cut any corners. I advise anyone looking for an incredible lunch experience to take the trouble to find this small place. It is just off Warren at Preston. It is worth the search, and there is always...
Read moreWe've been to Deli News about 4 times. Compared to alot of NY Style delis in the area, this one stands ahead of most. (I can't honestly say all, because I haven't been to all.)
We've dined in & most recently did a take out order on the way to our kid's field trip. We wanted a good, hearty sandwich instead of dry Zoo chicken tenders.
As always the food, sandwiches, soups, desserts were good. My weakness here is their cheesecake with blueberries. Much better than Cheesecake Factory when comparing apples to apples.
The prices aren't cheap, but it's really par for the course outside of NY delis. It's unfair to compare NY Deli prices & local NY Style deli prices. I ran into the same pricing things at NY styled delis in LA.
What I do like is that this deli doesn't try to be chintzy on the food. The sandwiches are generous with with meat. The soup is hearty & well flavored. My favorite is a simple matzo ball soup, and theirs is definitely not bland.
If I had one legitimate recommendation of improvement, it might be the dine in service. But I can't put my finger on what it is that exactly needs to improve. The greeting or acknowledgement as we enter is usually weak. Not unwelcoming, but... lackluster maybe? It definitely feels "New York" abrupt if that's the best I can describe it.
But once seated or dealing at the takeout counter, the service is welcoming & great. 1st visit, was shortly after they opened & it needed time to improve. 2nd & 3rd visit, they had gotten better & found sort of their groove. 4th visit - takeout- was at the counter & that went well.
My family & I like this place, so hopefully more people share the same experience & we can continue to go for a long time.
*We did get to meet the owner on one of the first visits & he was a high energy, welcoming & friendly guy. You can tell he definitely has personality. In a good way.
Will return for more!
*I was hoping I had found a corned beef sandwich to replace the cravings for the #19 at Langers' in LA. Still searching, but not a bad bandaid for...
