We arrived 7:30pm tonite to celebrate kid's achievement. She likes sushi. Waited 20 minutes for a table which is OK. Could have been seated faster if more staff were available to clean tables. First round AYCE came at 8:00pm which is not bad, and we immediately put in second round order. Then the problem came.
We waited and waited and until 8:46pm , we still have not gotten our second round of food. Mind that it's a 2 hour AYCE, so we spent half of the time allowed waiting on one round of food. Kids are starved and began to grow grumpy and tired to a point she fell asleep on the table. Significantly understaffed, total joke for AYCE. I saw all other tables got served big plates of sushi and they filled a lot of to-go orders, just no food for us, and no respect for kid customers being hungry. Maybe they think the kids are not eating much and didn't need to take care of them or give them much food, even they pay the same price as adults, or even higher because the younger one paid $19 for approximately just one half roll of sushi and some calamaris. I demanded an update for order at 8:35pm did they start making it. I asked if they accidentally forgot to put in our order, and she said no. That mean it was deliberate that they did not work on our order for at least 35 minutes. Upon checking, I had to constantly stare at the chef's direction with a hungry look on my face to make them work on my order. They did escalate it, and the food finally came at 8:50pm. A whopping 50 minutes for just 24 pieces of sushi.
I swiftly put in my 3rd order knowing how long they take to make it. This time the food came super fast at 9:00pm. So they were able to make the food fast. They just decided not to do it in the previous round.
Pushing so close to store closing time, and they were reminding us the kitchen is closing and we need to order fast, we had to put in the final order before we even had time to start eating our third round. It was a lose-lose situation. We had to gobbled up a lot of sushi in a short amount of time and ordering what we don't know if we can finish, and they had to make food that could be wasted. It was no satisfaction eating in a hurry. The dining experience was totally ruined, even though the food is quite good. I asked for ice cream for the little kid cos she waited too long and didn't want anymore sushi. They only gave her a small cup. Won't even let her have second. I felt like total wasting the money paid for her AYCE. ( Before she was able to have as many ice cream as she likes. The rules have changed without letting customer know).
Finally, the last order came at 9:20pm. To compensate for time lost it would only be fair if we were allowed to eat beyond the 2 hr limit. We had to eat while staff were cleaning the entire restaurant except our table, until we only have a few pieces left they then gave us our check. And we wanted our ice cream since the server said it was one per person. They refused because it was beyond the 2 hour limit. (But when my kid wanted more within the 2 hr limit they denined her. So is the ice cream AYCE, or just a compliment dessert for each customer, which now we were denied?)
The food, though just buffet quality, is not bad. But service is horrible. Staff is not trained to pay attention to customer needs. Their guidelines for AYCE is not clear even the staff had to get calrity when being asked a rule. Their guidelines conflict amount themselves. The experience was a total chaos and disappointment. And because our food came late, and in turn we ate late, when we were ready for go, my younger kids was deep asleep on the booth bench.
Although I still like their food, I will NEVER BRING MY KIDS HERE AGAIN. It is definitely not a family friendly restaurant, unless your kid is just a baby and won't consume any food. I will be cancelling our date with other families there. The food was also not as good as we previously had.
Sorry to say, but I had to revised it from a 4 star down...
Read moreAll you can eat sushi? More like all we’ll allow you to eat. I was recommended this restaurant a few times by friends so my cousins and I decided to try it and all I can say is we will never be coming back. We arrived at the restaurant at 7:45 and were told that there would be a 15 minute wait which we had no problem with. However, those 15 minutes ended up turning into 30 until they finally had our table ready. By the time we got seated and ordered our drinks, it was about 8:30. The service was incredibly slow and our waitress barely checked on us. It seems like she was intentionally ignoring our table so that we’d order closer to their closing time and she’d have an excuse to not bring out our food. Since we were waiting outside for so long, we looked up their menu and had our order ready within 5 minutes of being seated. However, it took her forever to not only take our sheet of paper with our order, but also bring out our food. They took a long time to bring out the rolls and on top of that they were brought out one by one. It felt like we were waiting longer than we were eating. Once we were ready for our second round of all you can eat, we placed our order yet the lady came back several times telling us we can’t order some of the rolls we wanted because they were “out of the ingredients.” Essentially, we were only able to order the generic and basic rolls only because they were easier for them to make. After lots of miscommunication, their chef came to our table and basically told us that the waitress had lied to us and they just didn’t want to make our order because they were closing soon. He also made the assumption that we wouldn’t be able to eat it all which was bold considering there was 6 of us total and I alone can eat 4 rolls myself. Who is he to tell me how much I can eat? On top of that, we had all been fasting and it was our first meal of the day so we were starving. His demeanor was incredibly rude and ignorant. The chef’s solution was that he’d cut our order in half and only make certain rolls yet he gave us no choice or say on what we’d get to order. Mind you, when we were ordering our 2nd round, the waitress specifically told us that since we wouldn’t have time for a 3rd round (since they were closing soon) we could order as many rolls as we wanted. So that was another lie she told. The place has a rule that if you don’t finish your food, you have to pay for each remaining roll. I’m just confused as to why the chef told us he wouldn’t make our rolls because we “wouldn’t finish them” when we would have gladly paid for what we couldn’t eat. After that, the waitress said they’d give us a discount which we appreciated. What was the discount you ask? She took off the two (!!!2!!!) sodas we ordered. Pretty much everyone at our table ordered water. What kinda discount is that!? Total BS. I will never be coming back to this restaurant. So many tastier and more friendly all you can eat sushi places near me. Worst restaurant experience...
Read moreI visited this restaurant for my sister's birthday January 17, 2020.
My older sister wanted to let them know ahead of time that we were a big party of about 12. The person on the phone interrupts her "No reservations!" We assume this person on the phone is the host, but he was the nicest person during dinner.
My younger sister picked this restaurant so we pushed that interaction aside to at least enjoy a place of her choosing. We get to the restaurant and the host was very nice. He set up the table and silverware for us.
At this time, 8 of 12 from our party was at the restaurant. We took our seats and waited. And waited. And waited. I am not sure how long it took for our server to greet our table let alone ask us for our drinks. From a guess it was probably at least 20-25 minutes before we were even greeted and given water. Just please. At least drop off water to us for the love of being a server. Initially, I wasn't sure what may have taken so long. It could've been because of confusion on who was assigned our table or a busy restaurant. Gave the benefit of the doubt.
The rest of the party arrives including the birthday girl. We asked for the buffet sheets which was given by the host.
We ordered and the sushi was excellent! There is vast variety of sushi, rolls, and appetizers to choose from that's included in the buffet. I commend the sushi chefs and kitchen staff for the dinner.
However, the service from the 2/3 servers were not satisfying. The older lady server was very nice and helped our 2 servers run food. She smiled every time she came by. The two younger servers did not seem friendly. The younger lady did not seem like she wanted to be there at all. Her and the other guy server would seem upset when we asked for items. They have some bad attitudes working here. We seem like a bother to them. We had to remind them several times for my youngest cousin's chicken which took a way too long.
After dinner, we pushed what ever plates we could to the side to sing happy birthday. We asked for a lighter and plates and assumed guy server would also bring forks. We ended up asking for forks also, guess we should've been specific. Not a birthday friendly nor big group friendly place.
We were charged gratuity which was expected. We paid for the entire bill out of courtesy since we have worked in the restaurant industry as servers from Blue Fish. Your younger servers, or whoever was taking our table, seemed to have taken advantage of my party's young age and guest count to have a decent tip percentage regardless of the service quality.
This was our first experience at Sushi Damu, but despite the great food, it will...
