This wonderful hidden gem, to anyone not under a rock or anywhere near the neighborhood of Fullerton, is a "Gem". It's low ceilings, warm lighting and Authentic Britsh Atmosphere, along with the fact that you can find your regular friends there, and always a new mate at the bartop... is absolutely wonderful. Those who come into The Old Ship know what they're coming in for. The food is most definitely 'pricey', but we are assured it is always made fresh and on the premises daily. We have been coming here for decades, and it was a pleasure to bring my now adult Son to a place that he only sat in booths at as a young boy. Coming back about 15 years later, we learned you can come home. Kourtney, the Bartendar, was wonderful and very gracious. We met great people at the very small 8-9 comfortably seated bar, where the social game is either not there at all or there in abundance. The dinner food is not something I can speak to, only because we order apps/starters and that is usually enough to fill us up. We had the "Garlic Sauteed Mushrooms" with 2 cups of the "Fresh, Daily Made Clam Chowder". It was Divine! The Clam Chowder could have more Clams in it, as it was more of a "Potatoe Soup balance". I'm not complaining about that because it is sufficient, but the price line needs to fit the amount of food you're getting. Just a pinch more clams please. 🤔 Either way...It's so creamy!...and it reminds me of eating right on the waterfront. When you show up at the bartop you can choose to be solo, but remember when you sit at one so small, it is a very social game. Kourtney can handle it, and we were delighted to see her there and watch how well she interacted with the entire restaurant. While she stood behind the bar, she kept pace with everything in the diningroom. We and another couple decided to stay a couple extra hours! Kourtney's continued excellence balancing service to the servers and her bartop group was superior! Her sense of humor was so great as well. Thank you Kourtney! For sh pi wing us we can come home!!! Love ya'll! Debra, Jared,...
Read moreThis evening we ate at The Olde Ship.
Lemme start by saying Service was non-existent. Our waitress Chandra was the absolute worst server I have experienced in a very long time. If I were rating the service she would get a 1 since there is no way to mark a 0. Although I usually weigh the service in the review, the restaurant earned a full 4 stars regardless of Chandra. We saw other waitresses and they all seemed excellent, it was just that we had the misfortune of sitting in Chandra's section.
The food was different story...
The Yorkshire pudding, was not what we expected. Of course we were not expecting Puddin. It tasted eggy and was quite small. We were expecting more for the price. Also, traditionally it is served with gravy not au jus.
We ordered the Beef Wellington, which was large enough to share, and our atrocious server seemed quite anxious to split the order for us. I looked through the menu and could not fine a split plate fee, but someone on Yelp said they charge $3 to split. We did not have her split the orders. I really enjoyed the Wellington, it resembled pot roast inside a pastry, then smothered in gravy. Served with mashed potatoes and smothered in gravy, then peas and carrots. (makes me think of Forrest Gump)
I tried some kidney pie and it was really good, the kidney was surprisingly delicious. I am not usually a big fan of organs.
My gf had Fish & Chips, the cod was overcooked, soggy on the bottom and the breading was too thin.
For dessert, we followed the advise on Yelp and ordered the Sticky Toffee Pudding. It was pretty fabulous. She would go back just for that.
I forget, did I mention how bad Chandra was...
Oh yeah, I did mention that. It was the tip...
Read moreExcellent food in a restaurant saturated with old world atmosphere! I had heard about this restaurant several times in the last two years and now I know why; very memorable and definitely not your average chain experience.
The service was very good, our waitress, Rusty was very busy but she did her best to keep everyone of her customers happy. The barman Tim was very personable.
The Clam Chowder is excellent! I had a side cup (served with delicious heated sourdough bread) with my Fish and Chips (Haddock or Cod.I had the Haddock as our waitress recommended it). The plate included a non-descript Coleslaw and tarter sauce; I wouldn't recommend either. Fries were perfect on the otherhand, thick cut, golden brown and quite tasty.
I enjoyed a healthy taste of Cheryl's Shepard Pie (not sure that is what the Ship called it (basically mashed potato covering a bed of tasty beef).
I rate The Olde Ship as one of my top 10 for 2018 (I go out to a lot of restaurants... a whole lot).
We parked on the side street off of Harbor although I am told they have a small parking lot behind the restaurant. Fullerton and this area are (within 6 blocks to the main downtown area) are very nice loaded with special restaurants, shops and style.
The Olde Ship is well worth the money, about $$$ out of four. You will certainly enjoy this quaint artistic restaurant.
Hope this review helps you.
