I wish I had taken some photos!! This place was a MUCH NEEDED break from the normal on the road stream of greasy, fast food places! The lady that helped us was not only very professional and genuinely welcoming, but also wielded her knowledge of the business and menu options like you'd expect from the reading of alcohol selections at a top notch restaurant. She took the time to explain her personal recommendations, why they were so uniquely special and what set them apart from the others. The price point was comparative to franchised sub shops, but the atmosphere had an updated Ma & Pop vibe to it. Hungry Hippo, an institution in greater downtown Gainesville that does not take itself seriously (in a good way). The friendly staff does take making subs very seriously. Meats and cheeses for each order are taken from the amply supplied cooler that forms the backdrop for the creation station. For a faster built-to-order sub, the vast selection of add-ons are presliced. The line of Hippo devotees* moves at a steady pace. After picking an order, a table with the current newspapers is available for those who want to relax, eat and catchup on the news.

Possibly the best sub sandwich I’ve ever had!!

Stayed in in Gainesville over the weekend and the Hippo was recommended by locals. Has small town charm (ask about the hippos on the wall) and great sandwiches.
