Wow! How time does change things.
Many years ago when Monument was located at the old location. I would stop in to get a quality meal at a good price. My whole life I go out to eat and I won't wait in a line. Food may be good but never good enough to wait in a line for 30 minutes or more. But, I would wait if need be to have something to eat at (The old location) Monument Cafe.
It's been many years since but I stopped in for breakfast today. Only because it was not busy and no wait.
Walked in and was very impressed. The spacious room between tables. The people working were a refreshing site of old school clean cut young works.
We sat in a booth. Very comfortable seats with plenty of room spaced between the table and area between my body. Not cramped in trying to squeeze another table.
When our waiter came he introduced himself (Ragan) and was very polite and knowledgeable about the menu. I'm particular about how my eggs are cooked. You order over easy and they aren't cooked completely through. Still raw egg in the mix. So I order over medium. I specifically request that they not have the scaly crap around the edges or all over the egg. Ragan reassured us that the cooks do a good job. I ordered grits and crispy bacon with toast and strawberry jam. The grapefruit juice was very good and tasted fresh squeezed. My wife got an over medium egg home fries and a pancake. The coffee was not too bold and had a very pleasant mild taste. I prefer heavy cream and not watered down 2% milk in my coffee. So we were very pleased to get heavy cream for our coffee.
After a few minutes a server brought one plate. It was the one egg and home fries. Talk about dissatisfied and disappointing. Half the egg had dark brown scale over it and the potatoes were cold. Not even a mild warmth to them. Need less to say we sent it back. After several minutes another plate came with the pancake. Surprisingly it was good. It was hot and had a good taste. My order came a few minutes later. The eggs were rimmed with a dry scaly crust. (Really? Who eats this crap?) I took the scale off and had half the egg order I wanted. I don't know about the grits either. Couldn't eat them. I'm not sure what they are made with but the taste was just off from true grits. I ordered crispy bacon. I'm not sure what the defining line is between crispy and burnt but mine was passed crispy and well into the burnt area. Again could not eat. Toast was good and strawberry jam was good. After sending the plate back and not really wanting a second attempt. Valerie, who is apparently in charge of the kitchen, came to our table. We discussed the situation with her and she was very understanding.
Over all, we did have a good experience with the right people taking care of us. I was disappointed in the food. But, the service was above average. The problem with the food overall is not a reflection of the people so I did leave a generous tip. Thank you Ragan and Valerie for making a potentially bad situation come out with a very pleasant outcome and a satisfied customer. I'm not sure about how fast I will return but I will definitely be back for a...
Read moreMay 2025 Weeeeerre baccckkkk. We have been back many times since 2022. Food is good. Choices are good. Services is good. Nice place. Everything improved.
Dec 2020 Well we have been going to Monument Cafe for 13 years+. The nice home town restaurant used to be know for giant biscuits, locally sourced food, healthy organic food when available, great iced tea, broad menu with great recipes and good service. It seems the good service is still there, but the restaurant is suffering. I know they prioritized El Monumento when it opened, moving Monument Cafe to a breakfast lunch restaurant. And I know covid has messed everything up. But this weeks visit was really bad. The seating was good and there are plexiglass partitions between the booths now. The server was good. I could not tell if the regular chef / cooks were online as there were pie boxes on the bar blocking the view into the kitchen. BTW, the bar seating is closed. I took my 10th grade son for a lunch. Our father / son lunches have been happening since he was two. We usually sit at the bar. The iced tea - brown and watery. There was a faint taste of tea. The server kept me filled as I was thirsty. No biscuits. We went to order the three salad sampler but that is off the menu now. I didn't realized that I was supposed to scan the QR code to see the menu. I scanned and it didn't display very well on Samsung S7 android device. Since salads were gone, we decided to order the best chicken sandwich in Texas. I learned as a loyal customer that I could ask for the grilled chicken sandwich but have it fried instead. Well that is gone. We could only get chicken friend chicken - not the same. The bun was stale and loaded with sesame seeds. This is a new bread. The chicken was greasy and flat. It used to be crispy fried, thick and very juicy. The lettuce was wilted. The tomatoes were whiteish inside indicating and unripe tomato. The fries were good, but mostly refried brown bits. Overall, a big disappointment. I know things are rough, but if you are going to stay in busy, get your quality back. If you like dennys or ihop, this is your place as the remaining menu doesn't resemble a good hole in the wall with healthy food, but a place to fill your gut with regular food. The checkerboard plate liners topped it off. No plans to return soon. Oh, by hungry high school boy, ate half the sandwich, put a napkin on the top and pushed it away. This never happens.
2007-2019 Great local place for basic good meal. We enjoy the three salad sampler for lunch sometimes. Other times we get the veggie plate along with a fried chicken sandwich - yum. The eggs over medium with the yokes broke with avocado on sour dough toast, with fresh...
Read moreWe went yesterday for lunch, two adults and four children, aged fourteen and under. We were sat in a corner booth right away. Our server didn't smile and I don't remember her actually introducing herself but it was a bit loud so we might not have heard her. She wore a ponytail and glasses and had visible tattoos. We ordered one burger, one chicken fried steak, one pumpkin pie french toast, one lite plate and one pearl sugar waffle. The kids also ordered $8 lemonades. I was told the chicken fried steak was "a good size" by our server so I ordered that to share with one of my kids. She also told us the pancakes were "big" so she suggested only ordering one for our daughter. When the food did come, our server did not bring our food to the table but rather a few different servers did, so when someone asked who ordered the "Mickey Mouse pancake" I let that person know we were told we ordered a "big" pancake, that server then said that was the big pancake. She only brought the food out though so she might have been confused and not known what we actually ordered since our actual server wasn't there. The waffle, French toast and burger were very good. The chicken fried steak was a tad burnt and the circumference of a large orange. It looked more like an appetizer. I had to ask our server a couple of times for straws as she kept forgetting them. The service wasn't the best but the food was good. When the check came (after our server finished stacking the plates on our table where we were sitting while we were still sitting there) there was an automatic 18% tip added because we were a party of six. I had noticed it printed on the menu before we even ordered which I was fine with but when I inquired about it, our server was very dismissive. Her attitude and attentiveness wasn't the best but if a tip isn't actually needed to be earned because the server knows they're getting it anyway, it's not surprising. Plus, I really don't know how places like this expect children and babies to pay for their food without adults present or to force people who don't actually order or who can't eat due to health issues to tip but like I said the food was good, service not so much. If we go again, we know to ask for three tables rather than one or just...
