I’m not sure why I keep giving this location a chance. I’ve been to the Sawtelle location dozens of times and everything has always been perfect. I just recently moved to Glendale, and every time I have been to this Kura location, something extremely disappointing has happened.
The first time I went, I made a reservation for a specific time, but despite that I still needed to wait an additional 40 minutes after checking in. This is not a waitlist situation like the Sawtelle location, this is supposed to be a time slotted reservation. The food was fine but the belts were completely empty and not being replenished. All that was left was edamame and watermelon.
The second time I went, my partner and I both ordered negi toro hand rolls, and they used spoiled fish to make them. They smelled and tasted so bad and sour that we had to say something, but thankfully one of the staff also recognized the issue after smelling the hand roll and was able to remove the items from our table. The staff was puzzled too. By that point, our appetites were spoiled and we had to leave. We both ended up getting sick that evening. That alone probably should have been the last straw, but I loved the Sawtelle location so much that I was willing to forgive it and thought it was just bad luck.
The third time I went, I ordered a tantanmen ramen. I received a miso ramen instead, I thought ‘okay no big deal I’ll let the staff know’. They came over, I explained the situation, and he responded by clicking on the item on the iPad, navigating to the ingredients, and saying “see, the ingredients are exactly what you ordered”. I responded, “yes I know it says that, but this is not tantanmen. I’ve ordered it here before, the broth is supposed to be red. This broth is clear” he responded “I know, confusing, right?” and he walked away. I thought he would re-appear with the correct order or something, but I never saw him for the rest of the meal. I did not eat the ramen in case he came back with a replacement, but he never did. I ended up paying for it anyway and I left.
This location has some serious issues, and it has put a really bad taste in my mouth both literally and figuratively about the whole franchise. I’m not sure I’ll be coming back ever, and it’s a shame because I used to consistently visit the Sawtelle location a few...
Read moreFun concept for a conveyor belt sushi joint! This joint reminded me of my travels to Tokyo because of the quirky tech. Not the food though, just the tech...
I arrived an hour before closing on a Friday night for a table for 1 and still had a 30 min wait. Luckily, it's in the mall with quirky shops around and they text you updates.
$3.65 every plate. The plates aren't color coded for price. There's a sensor on top of the lid when you pull the plate. Then when you're done, you shove the plates in the chute in front of you, which turns out to be pretyy fun!
And you order other items via the tablet above your head and they slide it to you with precision on the 2nd level shelf. However, I didn't notice descriptions on the items. What's in a tiger roll? What's in a crunchy dragon roll? Who knows. Just order it and try it. (Probably sucks for dietary restricted people, they should have a filter feature on the tablet).
A server never came to me but did introduce themselves to the couple next to me. Ordered a water with the tablet and it never arrived (user error?). Probably because I was by myself and they didn't notice. However, the server I waved down was really helpful with my questions.
I ate about 9 plates so it came out to around $40 before tip. Is that a good deal? The food was nothing to rave about but I do stuff my face more than the average person. So price is okay... I do wish they had more sushi variety. Got bored quick with the sushi plates.
Fun concept to introduce to friends/family, but I probably won't be a...
Read moreThis location is just as nice as the Cerritos and Buena Park locations. It's fun to go if you want to go as a couple, double date or by yourself. Each plate is charged differently depending on which location and which sushi you order. There are cooked and raw sushi options for people who don't want to eat only raw sushi. There's also udon and ramen options if you don't want to eat sushi completely. Mostly If you only select off their seasonal foods and events, there will be an extra charge but you will be made aware of it prior to selecting it. If you like sushi and you don't want to wait for the sushi to make its way to you, you're welcome to order off the touchscreen. Especially if you want ice cream or mochi. For every 15 plates (around 15) you eat, you do win a prize as a reward for clearing that many plates. It's a fun way to pass the time if you go with more than 2 people if your aim is to win the prizes. If you don't want to eat so much food to get the prizes, you can always pay for them from the touchscreen menu. You have the option to pay on the touchscreen or have a server to complete the transaction at the end...
