There really isn't anything great with this restaurant but Mixteca does have the potential to be. As you enter you're immediately made aware of this establishment's confusion. It's a restaurant named Mixteca that plays "country" music loudly overhead. The interior lacked Latino vibes you'd expect from a restaurant named Mixteca but it appeared to be clean and well maintained. There's no table service here nor any menus to sit and view which would have been a huge plus for this place. Instead you feel rushed to order at a counter like you're at McD's while mazing through bars like cattle to order from a vast menu overhead. There is a self serving salsa and chip bar (which is a nice touch) that's stocked and maintained well. I'm happy to report the bathroom was clean and well maintained as well. When your order is ready they actually call out a number that is printed on your receipt, clearly impersonal as if customers are just a number. The meals are placed on a tray like in an elementary school cafeteria and the plates are the offensive foam (such a waste). The sides are served separately in small foam cups and the utensils are flimsy plastic. The Mexican inspired meals are "white-washed" (doesn't taste authentic) but still decent. There isn't much inspiration to the flavoring here but better than taco bell for sure. This restaurant also has a small bar that opens up to the inside as well as an outer lounge-like area. The bar serves beer and mixed cocktails. We were surprised there was a DJ playing good music near the bar but it was difficult to hear within the restaurant because of the annoying loud country music playing overhead. There's also an outdoor patio but you couldn't hear any music out there but it's layout seemed nice. Mixteca has a LOT of potential and could be a Hotspot with its location if only they'd invest more energy and effort in the quality of the food, service and the all the easily improvable small details. There's nothing negative to say about the employees, just wish they wouldn't sweep the floors near tables customers are eating at which is unsanitary. Seriously who likes dust/debri flying about when you're food is exposed?...
Read moreMe and my bf tried this place for the first time, he got 3 ground beef tacos and I got the supreme quesadilla with chicken. We went around 8:30pm ish and the place was pretty empty besides two guys at the bar and a small group of friends sitting at one of the tables, the staff was really nice and we didn’t wait long for our food to come out. I’m not gonna lie the food did look pretty mid when we checked it at the restaurant. My quesadillas were greasy and soggy the tortilla didn’t look cooked despite the cheese and chicken being melted together and the ground beef on my bf tacos looked kinda weird but we were hungry so we went home. It didn’t get better from there. my bf said that his taco tasted really bad and that were was something wrong about the beef. I took a bite and bit down really hard on what felt like a piece of bone or cartilage in the ground beef.. like I’m not an expert but since when is there bone pieces in ground beef? My poor tooth :( And the smell of the beef was just off. My bf tried one of my quesadillas and was equally disappointed. he seared it for a bit on our flat tortilla pan to give it some crisp and it honestly looked really good like how a quesadilla would look at any other restaurant but sadly the flat pan couldn’t save it. The chicken by itself tasted bad like it was spoiled almost or there was something else it was cooked with that gave it a weird tingy taste, same with the beef it had a weird tingy taste. I know saying the chicken tasted spoiled is a REAL reach but idk what it was. ive definitely had unseasoned/ dry chicken before and by itself cooked doesn’t taste bad like that. If anything the cheese should’ve compensated, but it didn’t the whole thing just tasted so off. I got guac and sour cream on the side with the quesadillas and the quac tasted sour as well. It was a sad night. This place seems like it has great potential so maybe we just got a bad batch idk but we were extremely...
Read moreI have been to just about every state in the American Southwest and have tried the mexican food in each one. And as an AZ native I have been all over the valley and have had Mexican at dozens of restaurants here. None of them beat Mixetca. NONE.
I've been coming to Mixteca for over 8 years now and for that entire time it has remained the absolute #1 place to get Mexican food anywhere north of the border. It is THE standard that I compare every other restaurant against. Their salsas are fantastic, their beef is exquisitely prepared, well seasoned and juicy, their guacamole is excellent. Even the beans and rice are undeniably up to snuff. Their Carne asada burrito is the best I've ever had. I can scarcely think of a single thing I could criticize even if I tried.
The only thing I could possibly think of is that some places have more creative street Tacos, like La Santisima. But if you're just looking for some good old Carne asada Tacos Mixteca is still unbeatable.
As I mentioned I've been coming here for near about 8 years now, and during those 8 years I have visited nearly every week, or at least around once a month. You'd think after that many visits I'd have experienced my fair share of quality issues. But no, they are incredibly consistent, and consistently the best. I genuinely can't remember ever having to send an order back after all these years.
If you enjoy Mexican food, go out of your way to give this place a try. You will...
