During our travels, we like to try new places to eat at. It is rare that we try a new place for breakfast as we usually stay at hotels and motels that offer their very unique versions of “The continental breakfast”. This time we decided we wanted a heartier, more…complete breakfast. So we left our hotel and drove toward Bend hoping to find a nice place to eat along the way. Enter Elmer’s in Grants Pass. As we were driving my lovely navigator, asked her friend Siri to suggest a good breakfast restaurant. Siri’s top suggestion of Elmer’s peaked my wife’s interest and thus, we made our way there. Once there, the building seemed no different or more special than the IHOPs of old or the Sharis across the street. The only hint that gave away its ability to win “…the Best Breakfast place in Grants Pass…”, according to reviews, was a completely full parking lot. Summoning my best knight rider impersonation, I quickly and deftly pulled into the parking lot just in time to find a vehicle leaving its spot open for us. We parked and entered the building, all chuffed that we didn’t have to wait long. Once inside, we were warmly welcomed and brought to our table. Wishing a minute or two, our server brought us menus and asked what we wanted to drink. We made our choices and another couple of minutes later, our food came out, warm and smelling delicious! I honestly can’t remember the name of what we chose; all I remember is that her choice had the word ‘farmer’ in hers and mine had avocado. Well, the moment of truth came to us and, wow! Good breakfast indeed. Their hash browns are grated from fresh potatoes and pan-fried to a golden, crisp brown which is so difficult to get… My very, very big, three-egg omelette was replete with deliciously melted cheese and smoked, chipotle-infused bacon and coupled with the fresh fluffy eggs and avocado was, heavenly. Of course it needed a little kick but that is just ‘cause I need to put hot sauce on everything! My wife’s farmer breakfast was huge!!! Tons of hash, two over-easy eggs, two links of turkey sausage, two strips of bacon and two slices of the juiciest ham I’ve ever had. (Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it was too much for her and me being the nice guy that I am, helped her.) She found the coffee to be mediocre but still better that this she’d had at hotels. My orange juice was fresh-squeezed and chilled to perfection. Price point was good. Definitely worth the breakfasts. Service was excellent and friendly throughout. Will we come back? Maybe. But that’s just ‘cause we try to not go to the same place twice. Food here is good and plentiful!

In 1960, Walt and Dorothy Elmer opened breakfast focused Elmer’s Colonial Pancake House in Portland, OR. Truly a family owned and operated labor of love, Walt, Dorothy, and their three sons poured their hearts into serving the local community. It was an immediate success thanks to their commitment to bringing people together for home-style cooking, using only the finest ingredients. Built on the foundation of Walt Elmer’s famous buttermilk pancakes, the original recipe for pancake batter was purchased for $1,000 and rumor has it that Walt kept it locked in his safe. We still use Walt’s original recipe today! Over the years, the menu was expanded with lunch and dinner items and the restaurant became Elmer’s Pancake & Steakhouse. In 1966, Elmer’s began franchising and continues to grow to this day. Including the newest addition, Egg N’ Joe, there are now 29 Elmer's locations throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California and Arizona.

Our first Sunday brunch in January 2025. It was a very busy morning at Elmer's but the wait time, the service, taste and quality was still excellent. Menus are easy to read. They even have a nice children's menu with activities and games to enjoy, 🖍️ crayons are also provided 😊 Easy to find just off interstate 5 on the Grants Pass Highway. There's plenty of free parking, 2 handicap spots by the entrance and two more around the side by the bar. The entire restaurant is handicap friendly. It's a single level building. Nice clean restrooms, friendly staff. And always a good hot cup of coffee ☕ or hot chocolate with whipped cream in one of the famous mugs. We had omelets, reuben sandwiches, the kids had burgers and fries. We had to get 2 go containers cuz the servings were very generous.

Updated 5-12-2024 Breakfast with the grands today. Again, the atmosphere was relaxing with excellent service. Sasha was a pleasant server and bartender. Highly recommended. Updated 7-4-2023 Met our grands for breakfast today. We had great service, mimosas by the carafe and excellent food. I LOVE the quiet and relaxing atmosphere here. It has all the benefits of a bar and a restaurant without the noise of a restaurant. The Purple Parrot bar at Elmer's has a very relaxing atmosphere with lottery machines and a pleasant bartender. We stopped in for a night cap and thoroughly enjoyed the time spent there. Our bartender (wish I could remember his name) was a quick wit and can mix a great drink too. We will be back and highly recommended stopping in for a drink or a little gambling.
