I’m really hoping this review can help to make this restaurant succeed. Me and my partner went in with very very high hopes. The atmosphere was lovely, the entire space is perfect for a live scene and great authenticity. The folks who run this are obviously very hard working and have everything they need to run a great business (except maybe seasoning).
We were seated and when looking at the menu we asked about the large “ASK ABOUT FREE BEER ON SUNDAY” on the menu. “Oh we don’t have that today.” Oookay that’s fine but why even advertise it. So we order and chat while we wait. Though our waiter forgot a couple times that we asked for flour tortillas it was a perfectly fine interaction.
The food was unfortunately more upsetting than I could have even expected if I HAD gone through the drive through. My partner ordered a chicken Gordita that was quite literally beans, chicken, and chicken bones in between two half cooked corn tortillas. Thank goodness he had half the brain to open the gordita up first, and not us finding out after our child after taking a bite. I asked for the chiles rellenos and had more cheese than I could even expect to fit into a Chile. Yet with the presentation overall being perfect, there was almost no flavor at all. Like, make me question if I had covid (which after asking for Valentina sauce I was assured I don’t). And taking it apart without any knives was like trying to wrestle a violent, oily octopus.
The kicker? We came here for the “great prices”, but the menu doesn’t have accurate prices. The only warning about the prices being jacked up was the apology on the receipt after we had already paid. Maybe a sign would help? A sticky note on the table? A sticker on the menus? Nothing?
Really sad to be so disappointed, and to be typing this as I head somewhere else for lunch. I was really hoping to find a good tex mex place to enjoy with the family close to home. Here’s to...
Read moreGreat food. I ordered the torta al pastor, 2 tacos lengua, and 2 tacos birria. All were good, but the torta was one of the best I have ever eaten. The food was piping hot. The tortillas were fresh and supple. You could tell that these weren't sitting up for long time under a heating element.
The bread on the torta was toasted both on the inside as well as outside which allowed the bread to stand up to the sauce, meat, and veg inside. They were generous with both the meat and the avocado. And it was very good and balanced with some sauces added inside the torta. Well seasoned but not very spicy. If there had been a roasted jalapeno or serrano or two added, it would have been perfection in my opinion. The torta was bigger than what I have been served before. Had I known, I likely would have not ordered the tacos or only ordered one of each. 9.5/10
The tacos, like the torta, were generous in the amount of meat added. They were good examples of what a good street taco is. Simple but good and balanced. Good tortilla, good meat, onions, and cilantro. I've had better lengua and birria elsewhere, but, compared to most places, they were still good. I think the birria edged out the lengua in my opinion. 7/10
The sauces were far milder then what I expected. They tasted ok, but lacked a punch. The green sauce has a fresh green chile taste and the red was a bit smoky. The red was best on the lengua whereas the green went well with already smokey sand seasoned birria. If they were to up their game on the sauces, it would take their phenomenal tortas and great tacos to the next level. 5/10
Overall, highly impressed and will return if in the same area...
Read moreWow! That's all I can say about their steak burrito! I am from out of town and staying at a hotel nearby, so when going through the Mexican food options (after all, I AM in Texas!), I came across this spot which was not only the cheapest, but when I looked them up online seemed to be a legit family spot, so I ordered their carne asada burrito and queso fundido.
I was HANGRY so I was downstairs waiting for the driver and got back to my room to find a well packed and piping hot meal. First, this is THE BEST burrito I've had in many, many years! I should know, I've eaten burritos from all over the U.S., Mexico and having lived in Southern California for a good chunk of my life. This burrito was a winner for all of these reasons: It was BIG! It had amazing carne asada (beef), tender, hot, not salty, no grizzle at all and lots of beef top to bottom. It was wrapped in a good quality tortilla that wasn't the chewing gum junk you find from Chipotle... Best and my favorite reason is that it had ZERO rice!!!! Beef eaters rejoice!!! No starchy fillers and solid protein.
Some beans in-the-mix would have been fine, but nope, these guys take their beef (carne asada) burritos seriously...
BTW, the queso fundido is a runny, gooey cheese sauce served hot (like nacho cheese), but meant for dipping your chips in and it was fantastic. Again, not salty, mild with some chopped peppers and chilis in the sauce.
I definitely recommend this place for REAL...
