Escape to Grapevine for Fun
This place is new to the DFW escape room scene but don't let that deter you. These rooms are high quality and obviously created by lovers of the game. They are obviously working to evolve puzzle quality and push the incorporation of tech to the next level.
We journeyed here as party of birthday celebration. There were seven of us, most of whom had only a single room under their belt so going in everyone was anxious and excited. The birthday girl's hubby had booked the Winery Room, which I was thrilled about because it was a new theme concept. It does get tiring seeing so many prison breaks and bank heists. I get that they are exciting ideas for new players but after you've played a couple they tend to blend together. But I digress.
Right off the bat we met the owner and the most adorable little pup named Saki. She was going to be the game master for our group. We were told she was the best in the business and we shouldnt let her little squished face fool us. Okay, not really, but she was definitely the cutest dang escape game mascot ever.
The room was very high quality. It fit the theme extremely well and there was no denying the game makers eye for detail. The story was pure escape rather than adventure. You're trapped and need to find something to let you out. But it was wrapped in a theme appropriate tale that worked with the room to make a very immersive experience.
The locks were a mix of combos, keys, keypads, and my new least favorite thing ever, the date lock. I only say that because I can not seem to read these dang things for some reason. The puzzles were inventive and exciting. There were several we had never encountered before, which is always thrilling because you have to figure out this new challenge. Note, pay attention. There is one puzzle we had to use a hint on because we just kept missing a detail when we encountered it.
There are some difficult aspects of this game but the game master is really good so don't fret. I should really just make a blanket statement here also that you should think outside the box in this room. Stop and look at things. Use your intuition and logic skills. Remember this room was designed by someone who loves puzzles so think like them. If you love puzzles too then you will love it.
In the end, our group conquered the space and escaped to freedom. The birthday girl was given the honor of entering the last answer to set us all free. Everyone had a great time and the buzz of excitement and happiness was palpable. This was a great experience for all.
The owner gave us a sneak peek at the Wedding Chapel room and, OMG, that space looks freaking amazing. I cannot wait to get back over to Grapevine and take it on. If you love a good escape game then this is the place for you. If you're new to this whole concept, this is a great...
Read moreMy sister and I had a great time trying to escape from Grapevine Escape's wine-themed escape room. Grapevine Escape is a "mom and pop" independently owned escape room company, and yet the set decor, props, and clever puzzles rivaled and even exceeded some corporate-owned escape rooms my sister and I have done. Our gamemaster was Dane and he did an excellent job giving us only enough guidance (upon request) to get us past wherever we got stuck. Dane was very response and friendly, and in fact during the intro he and the owner explained that their gamemasters are dedicated to one room at a time instead of multitasking between several rooms at once, which makes it really challenging for the gamemaster. I enjoyed their "dino punch" which I think was Hawaiian punch and Sprite and got free refills brought to me even during the game, which we've never seen before. We got close to escaping but didn't quite solve all the puzzles in time (in our defense our team was two people and the wine room is recommended for four or more players) and we really appreciate that Dane took the time after our experience to walk us through the puzzles we didn't have time to get to. My sister and I very highly recommend...
Read moreI've never been so sad that I was only visiting a city on business, because I wish I could come back to do all of the rooms here. Our gamemaster Ron got off to an amazing start, calling to let us know that the previous group cancelled so we could come early if we wanted—which was amazing, because we had been wishing there was an earlier time available as I had to be awake early the next morning. When we got there, he was super fun and welcoming. Throughout the room, he gave helpful hints that still let us solve the problem ourselves. He was funny, encouraging, and uplifting, and was able to give us a bit of extra time since there was no one booked after us so that we could finish the room and resolve all of the mysteries. I've done a ton of escape rooms, and I think he's the best GM I've ever had.
We did the wine room, and I loved that not all of the puzzles were simple locks. The two interactive bottle puzzles were especially fun (and I specifically found the puzzle with the green and clear bottles oddly therapeutic), and I also really liked the clue for the directional lock and the little decoder wheel for a different puzzle. This is the most fun wine tour I've...
