Reservation for 12. Approx 25% full in the restaurant. Not busy but took 30min to seat. No menus. Server brings empty glasses and 2 pitchers of water and told to serve ourselves. Only had enough water for about 6. No menus. Server returned 10 min later for drink orders. We all start with just water. No menus. No water refill.
Server returns later to refill water. No menus. It's dinner time but still not busy and multiple servers on shift. A different server returns and gives us menus finally. Server returns about 10 minutes later and we start ordering. We order food and decide on coke and teas. As we order our drinks, the server would walk away and tell another server our drink orders. He would then come back and continue taking our orders. Kinda strange.
Ten minutes later, server comes back with a pepsi and tells us they don't have coke products. No issues with that, but usually servers would tell you that when you order, right? More strangeness. Later, one of the teas arrive in a really cool individual teapot infuser. Spoiler alert, but that's the highlight of the night.
Two orders of kimchi fried rice come out. Person across from me asks if one of them is his kimchi fried rice with pork. No clear answer but it's set in front of him. We watch him examine it hesitantly but we assume the server knows what he's doing. Keep in mind, it's still not busy at the restaurant.
The 2nd order of tea comes out in the same cool teapot. A few soups come out afterwards and there is some confusion on who ordered what. Minutes later, 2 bento boxes come out. One is correct, the other is not. The server takes one back to the kitchen. A different server brings out the same bento box and tries to give it to us. We tell him that it's the incorrect order and he says it must be for another table. Our patience turns to frustration and begin to get vocal.
The correct kimchi fried rice w/ pork surprisingly arrives, so now we have an extra bowl of regular kimchi friend rice. A few sushi plates come out and are distributed. Bento box returns again. We think it's the same one. Server says this is correct but will bring out an extra side of whatever was missing. I haven't received my food. Not quite sure if that's a good thing or bad thing yet.
At this point, everyone has their food. No servers are coming back to refill our pitchers nor checking how we are doing. I continue to patiently wait and give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe I ordered a special dish or something.
One of the servers return and we ask about my order. She apologizes and asks what I ordered. I tell her what it was and have her cancel since everyone is done eating. She apologizes again and walks away. Another server comes back and offers to make a to-go order for me. I politely refuse. It's a night of celebration for one our friends, so I don't want to make a scene of it. He offers me a 50% discount for the next time I return. I also refuse that. He actually asked me not to write a poor review, which makes the table snicker in unbelief. To get him to go away, I respond politely that I will not be returning.
The night is getting late and no signs of servers and no checks. One friend has to leaves and goes to the cashier to pay. We see him linger there until he can finally pay. The server returns with our checks and explains to us that the gratuity is already added in since we had a large group. No one says anything. We just want to leave.
Server does not return to collect our payment. We gather a few checks and hand it to a server. One of our friends goes to the cashier to check. She returns and jokingly says she now works here because the cashier sent her back with receipts and pens.
The server comes back to get the rest of the checks. One person in our group pays with cash. By the time we leave, she still doesn't receive her change. Granted, it wasn't a lot of change back but there was no attempt to even return it.
Food quality was not reviewed since my order...
Read moreStopped into Menya on New Year’s Eve to grab a bite with my girlfriend. We thought it was going to be packed and was pleasantly surprised when it wasn’t.
We’ve been to Menya a few times over the years, recently moved over to south Denver and if we are looking to get sushi/ramen and don’t want to try a new spot we’ll come here.
Since it was New Years I wanted to max out (I thought we did until I saw that sushi boat!)
We started with the veggie egg rolls and pork gyoza. Both are good but aren’t quite homemade I don’t think. Still would get them if I was hungrier that usual, she also got a miso soup and was very happy with it.
We then got some Tuna, a philly roll, a rainbow roll, and a diablo roll. The fish was fresh and looked nice. I commented on how cleanly all the food had been presented. The tuna looked pretty good and it tasted even better. The Philly roll was a Philly roll and I was not let down. My personal favorite was the rainbow roll. Generous size and very fresh tasting. (Remember this is Colorado not LA or Tokyo)
Lastly I got a big ole bowl of Pork Tonkatsu ramen. It looked very nice and the broth had a pretty color. Upon tasting it, I was hit with a very mild broth (In spice and flavor) and a big kick of ginger. I want to say the ramen was not bad at all, it just wasn’t very flavorful, the pork and broth was pretty bland, without any heat. I believe I just like ramen broth a certain way and my taste may be very different to many others. The majority might like ramen less spicy. (especially in cherry hills..har har) this last one is kinda silly but I also like my egg a little less runny. If your looking for a spicy/seasoned ramen with a harder than runny egg, maybe just get the sushi, if not dive in. I still ate the whole dang bowl!
So, sushi is pretty on point, apps are good, and the ramen is okay. The service was great, very polite, and the food came fast. Not too fast!
I hear they have a great happy hour I’d like to try because our bill was just over $70 pre tip. Not bad for a New Years dinner but I wouldn’t do it all the time.
Wouldn’t expect “pretty good” sushi and tapas next...
Read moreMy husband and I ate there this afternoon for Father's Day (he loves ramen) and we left VERY disappointed. The food was decent, but certainly not for the price. The service, was just awful. We weren't waited on promptly, and when we were it seemed like we were inconveniencing our server. The restaurant wasn't even busy! It was baffling on why it took so long to be served - and we were never ever asked how things were, or if everything was okay - or even how our meal was. It very much felt like they wanted us out.
The portion size of broth and noodles are pretty good, but the pork belly isn't much. You'd honestly be better off going to a Pho place if you want something close to ramen.
What was most shocking and upsetting is that our pork belly was cold in the middle - as if it had been frozen and recently thawed out, cold. I've never once had ramen with cold pork belly in it... it really ruined the experience of the entire meal. I even tried submerging the pork in the broth to heat it up, but it wasn't even that hot either.
Pretty disappointing over all, and the price just made it a slap in the face. I have no problem paying a high price tag for unforgettable food - but this is not unforgettable in a good way.
We will not be returning for all of...
