We celebrated our wedding anniversary at Huggo’s and were extremely satisfied with our meal. Victor M. was our waiter and he was friendly and had a great sense of humor. We arrived just before 5 when they start serving dinner and had no wait. There was a steady line of people waiting to be seated over the time we were there. We started with a Huggo’s Mai Tai, which they claim is the best on the island. It was okay, but not a drink that blew us away. Fortunately, this was the only disappointment of the night. For dinner, we had the Hook Line and Sinker (Ono) and Kalbi Style Beef Short Ribs and Shrimp followed with the Hualalai Kea Cream Pie (Mud Pie). The Hook Line and Sinker is listed as Chef Albert’s favorite creation and it did not disappoint. The fish was cooked perfectly….we loved it! The Kalbi Style Beef Short Ribs and Shrimp was also an excellent meal. Tender rib meat that had great flavor. We finished our meal with the Hualalai Kea Cream Pie, which we would call a typical mud pie with Kona coffee ice cream. The portion was huge and plenty for two people to share. Huggo’s was the perfect place to spend our anniversary. Besides the slight disappointment with the Mai Tai, the rest of our experience was phenomenal. Watching the beautiful sunset was the icing on the cake. We highly recommend Huggo’s for the great food. We won’t wait for our anniversary to go back!

TLDR: disorganized, overpriced gross food, horrible music. This place is super disappointing. Way overpriced for frankly bleh food. We showed up for our reservation and were told to wait in the lounge where we were approached by a waiter asking for our drinks order. Before our drinks came the hostess came and told us our table was ready but when she found out we had ordered drinks she was disaproving because apparently we shouldn't have ordered drinks and wouldn't be taken to our table until the tab was closed. We then had to wait in the lounge area for our drinks and bill to come, then we had to hunt down the hostess so we could finally be seated. Waitress was fine, she did her job. We were seated close to Huggos on the Rocks on the balcony where we were subjected to what I must assume was a lady being paid to sing continuous karaoke. Perhaps she's a professional singer but I hope not because it was earsplitting. When our food came the fish was overcooked, the risotto was bland, and two of the beef dishes were oversalted. If we weren't paying $35+ a plate for this I would have let it slide, but at that price the food needs to be cooked properly and at least taste ok. They gave us a slice of coffee cake since we were there celebrating but we just took it home so we wouldn't have to listen to the live music any longer than we had to. Skip this overpriced tourist trap.

After great experiences at the sister restaurant of this original dinner location up the street, we closed our vacation with a final dinner here. From what we can tell, this is one of, if not THE best place to eat in Kailua-Kona itself. The food was really good! I had a new item on the menu, the glazed pork roast. When it said it was "a pound" I expected it to have a bone in it to be part of that pound - but no, it was a full pound of glazed meat! The grilled asparagus that came with it was excellent, but the mashed potatoes, while flavorful with a bit of a spicy powder on it, were a bit too dry for my taste. The pork was almost perfect and had a great flavor too, but it was also just a bit drier than I like. Maybe slightly overcooked, but only a smidge. Servers were friendly and attentive. We were thanked each time we said anything, which was a little odd but, very friendly. Same as with the sister restaurant, we were seated right by water. This location is a bit cramped though, so it did feel like I needed to pull in my chair quite a bit to make sure I wouldn't be in any rushing server's way. Loved the huge list of cocktails (over a dozen) inspired by different Hawaiian islands. Wish I had had time to drink more than two of them. The driest one, to my Wisconsin palate, was their Hula Fashioned - plenty of booze in it! The live music was also very nice.

Excellent service, Good atmosphere, good presentation, pretty good food. My entrée (fish) was good but nothing exceptional, especially for the price. The curry it was served on was pretty tasty but the carrots were pretty boring. My wife's entrée had some of the best lamb we've been served with some of the worst couscous I've had. The couscous was bland and hard. Evidently it's supposed to be like this as our waiter mentioned it's a common complaint (as an aside, our waiter was amazing too!) I could look past except for the fact that there's only five entrées on the menu. If a restaurant's selection is that limited, I expect each one to be executed perfectly. This was not the case. Besides the entrées, I was very happy with the other offerings. The cocktails were great and the cheesecake was outstanding. Huggos is overall quite good but my rating boils down to the fact that I've been to maybe 8 restaurants in Kona during my vacation here, and I'd recommend almost all of them before I'd suggest somebody take a trip here. Not quite worth the price when there's some more enjoyable options down the road.
