Sweet Journey Soft Serve — Restaurant in Hawaii

What Happened to the Wonderful Service at Sweet Journey Soft Serve in Kailua Kona, Hawaii? I was delighted to discover Sweet Journey Soft Serve when they opened in August of 2020. I have serious allergic reactions to many of the foods I once enjoyed. Finding a friendly, inviting place that offered a wonderful, safe taste treat like their soft serve macadamia nut based ice cream was amazing. Plus the owners were very friendly and even offered a menu item they could prepare for me with my restriction. I was delighted to share this business with my many friends and family to support and promote them whenever possible.

I have been disappointed to see the initial friendly customer service that made visiting Sweet Journey & Cafe so enjoyable, drastically decline over time. I did contact one of the owners a several months back to express my frustration in the hope that would encourage them to take some corrective action. Instead, I found his response rather rude and quite defensive.

Yesterday, while treating a friend from the mainland to Kona, after a wonderful lunch at Teshima’s Japanese restaurant, we decided it would be nice to get some ice cream for dessert. We drove to Sweet Journey Soft Serve and found an extremely frustrated young lady attempting to help the customers in spite of their computer system being down and off line.  People were angry with her that they weren’t being helped as quickly as they would like. Others were upset to find that the soft serve was now made with chickpeas rather than the macadamia nut base ice cream they expected. We talked to several out front. The owners were not at the store and the young people there were doing their best to assist the customers.  Quite a few customers left, some after making rude comments to the young lady at the counter, leaving her close to tears. It was Not her fault!!

Having hyped how amazingly good the mac-nut soft serve was to my friend and spending over 20 minutes to get not mac-nut but chickpea ice cream that’s nowhere near as good as the macadamia nut product was embarrassing.  It’s the third time I’ve brought a friend and had another disappointing experience. I had hopeful expectations for this ice cream. I ordered a vanilla and chocolate twist, with some chocolate drizzle. It looked delectable when I first got it. But then I tasted it and it was unfortunately not delicious. The consistency was how soft serve should be, but the flavours were sour/tangy, and it did not taste like vanilla at all. The chocolate flavour was very very subtle and the choco drizzle itself had a weird grainy texture (also couldn't taste the chocolate flavour in it). I liked that the ice cream was not too sweet and that is the only positive thing I can say about it. Sadly, I am now feeling very nauseous to my stomach. Maybe the sour taste meant spoiled ice cream? Sweet Journey Soft Serve ice cream is just AMAZING! Literally the best ice cream I have tasted so far during my Hawai’i trip. The ice cream is organic and made of fresh and local fruits or vanilla beans as well as organic local macadamia nuts. I have had the flavors blueberry and vanilla and they both have been so delicious and as a topping you can choose nice fresh fruits. The iceman Nick was the BEST, always had a smile, very nice and fun to chat with! Amazing service, which you don’t find often! If you are in the area of Kailua-Kona, definitely grab some of sweet journeys ice cream. You will not regret it and on top of that you also support local organic farmers!!!...
