Aside from the fact that my wife and I have been patrons of Ocean Diner ever since I met her in 2000, I've been eating at Ocean Diner since the 1980's! I've known Rick, the owner of the diner ever since my sister started managing Rick's two businesses ... Ocean Diner and Java Man Coffee House, both of which are located in the wonderful little beach side town of Hermosa Beach, California.
Ocean Diner is literally the epitome of the 50s California diner. It's not a New York diner, it's a California diner.
The food is definitely ALL American, but with that wonderful and amazing California twist.
What's a "California twist", you ask? Well, you have choices! Lots and LOTS of choices! You can get biscuits and gravy with eggs, crumbled bacon, AND sausage, I mean, what's more American than that? Or, you can get scrambled egg whites with green onions and mushrooms served with brown rice and a side of homemade pico de gallo salsa.
Their menu goes on and on! Not only that, but Ocean Diner has daily specials which are posted on a marker board up, behind the cash register listing even MORE amazingly delicious dishes.
If you live in the L.A. area, and you and your loved ones (or some friends) have been talking about getting down to the beach area for a weekend, you really ought to consider stopping by Ocean Diner and order yourselves a meal.
I suspect that Ocean Diner will most likely become one of your regular haunts.
A word of advice though. Get there early if you're going for breakfast on the weekend. If you show up anywhere after eight-thirty, expect to wait for up to thirty-five or even forty-five minutes to get seated.
Also, make sure that someone in your party goes inside to the register and gets one of your names on the list, otherwise, you could be there a long time.
Tell them that Blaise recommended...
Read moreThe Ocean Diner is a great place to eat. You know you're in for something special as soon as you walk through the door and you hear the 40s music playing and you see the serving bar with the case next to it filled with homemade baked goods.
Each dish is made with fresh ingredients. I was in town for three days, and had a different item each day. I started out with Erica's Special which is grilled veggies over brown rice with an orange ginger soy sauce that is awesome. I topped mine with 2 eggs over medium and had the fresh muffins. Day 2 was Rick's Special which has egg whites, mushrooms, and green onions with brown rice. I ordered the fresh biscuit with it which was like a slice of cake. Today, I finished my week with Greg's Special which is chopped turkey breast, onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes scrambled in egg whites with brown rice. I went with an English muffin which was perfect.
Come hungry and come early. This place gets packed on the weekends, but it's...
Read moreClean fresh traditional American diner food in a traditional small cafe restored to 20th century. Pre- & -post WWII newspaper front pages are framed on the walls and period music plays subtly. Primary sources from the time bring new insight if you step up and see what's there. Food is made to order and the plates are generous. They even make real malts and have special featured flavors on the menu board. Bakery case up front. Last time I saw a strawberry 🎂 It had the most attractive fluffy ballerina pink frosting imaginable. I haven't seen a fluffy frosting like that for so long that I think many people have never seen frosting like that. It looks like the old boiled frosting whipped with egg whites. It was the ballerina pink color that pulled me in. I've never seen such a pretty pink in sugar. It was so beautiful it defied photography. It was...
