Came to dee dees pizzeria after seeing finally open after a long construction period. Walking in, there seemed to be a good selection of good looking pies, although I decided to try the wings. I asked the cashier if the wings were full wings or sections, and she seemed confused by the question. After explaining to her the difference, she told me that they are full wings (both sections of the wing counts as one wing). As such I ordered 6 buffalo wings. The wait was reasonable for the food to be ready, although as I was waiting, I noticed a minimal amount of seating, and food debris, crumbs, and other dirt on all of the eating surfaces. The overall aesthetics of the interior felt cheap and rushed unlike the very well done exterior.
Once I received my wings, I found out that they were not full wings, rather they were wing sections making the 13+$ for what is essentially 3 chicken wings and absurdly high price.
The wings are described as lightly breaded, and that was an oversell. There was no discernible breading on the wings. Additionally, they were overcooked, dry , and had a smell and taste of rancid oil permeating through the chicken.
I ate two wingdings of the 6 and threw the rest away. They were that bad.
Overall, the experience was a loss. Maybe they will improve on their experience as time goes on, but when you only have two items on the menu (pizza and wings) and your staff can't competently talk about the food, and you can't cook it properly it seems unlikely. I recommend trying a different location in the area if your...
Read moreAfter much hype and excitement, I brought my daughter to DeeDee's a little before 7 pm on a Friday night. I wish I could rate how the food tasted, the crust on one of the pies looked amazing! As a bread baker myself, I appreciate a good crumb and it looked very airy and light.
When we finally were next in line at the counter, we waited several minutes while who seemed like a manager/supervisor made ZERO eye contact and was very preoccupied. At one point, I started thinking maybe we were expected to place the order ourselves.
When he finally acknowledged our presence, he assumed I was picking up an order. He never smiled or thanked us for waiting. I told him we were there to place one and was told they officially sold out of pizza; we could pick something from whatever was left in their case. On a Friday night before 7 PM?
He never apologized, never offered any comp/coupon. He didn't wait around to see if we wanted to order anything else or if we needed a few moments to decide, he walked off.
I was planning to order wings. But after the poor customer service, we left and decided to go to Skullboys Pizza Shack in town which has really good pizza for way less with much nicer customer service.
Nothing about his demeanor was personable at all. He looked like he could not have cared less. For a place selling pies for $28 and $31, that just opened one would expect much better service.
I don't know if...
Read moreWow, what a treat to have DeeDee’s open in Highland Park! As someone from Essex County, I’m pretty picky when it comes to pizza, but this spot has quickly become my favorite in the area. The chef/owner, who used to run Fatto Americano in New Brunswick, set my expectations high—and they were met, if not exceeded.
I tried the Cacio e Pepe round and the square salad pie with bacon marmalade, and both were incredible. The dough was light, crisp, and chewy in all the right ways. I loved that they served the arugula, cheese, and pepper on the side for the Cacio e Pepe without me even having to ask. Tried all three dipping sauces—usually not my thing, but they were fun, with the “Italian ranch” being a standout for crust dipping.
Big thanks to Jackie for opening this gem! Can’t wait to explore the rest of the menu. The only downside is the limited indoor seating—it would be great if this became more of a sit-down spot. On the plus side, parking is a breeze, and online ordering was super easy and precise. They’re impressively well-organized for only being on their second day, and you can tell they know what they’re doing!
Looking forward to...
