After reading some of the reviews. I decided I had to say, I have no idea why people are saying the food is not good/awful. I definitely agree that finding Mexican food that is really good is hard to find. That’s why I’m going to say this. I’ve been to Baja, two times with a friend and we always sit at the bar. We have never had a problem with the service, but I can’t speak for what’s going on in the dining room. I had dinner last night at the bar. It’s my second time coming here last night. I had the chimichanga dinner. Absolutely delicious. Just not the chicken chimichanga. But also, refried beans, the guacamole, the chips and salsa. Basically what I’m trying to say. Delicious. I asked about how they made the guacamole. It’s homemade right along with the Tortillas. I’ve been to Mexico so many times. The first thing that came to mind is that I was right back there, because everything is so fresh and authentic. Also, have to give Cherie Our bartender two thumbs up. The margarita was so good. Probably too good. I would really like to get feedback from anyone that finds themselves in Hoboken looking for really good Mexican food. If I lived in Hoboken , I probably be there a little too much. Not just for the food but also the vibe of the atmosphere.

A Mexican bar that calls the cops on its own customers. We sat at the bar and were told margaritas were $6 plus $1 for flavor. But the moment we stepped outside to the patio, the price suddenly doubled to $14 each—because, according to the manager, the “special” was only at the bar. When we questioned the charge, the white manager came out and said, “the waitress told me you’re only not trying to pay your bill,” and before she even made it back into the restaurant she was already on the phone with the cops. No attempt to ask what happened, no effort at customer service—just straight to 911. The bartender later admitted the mistake and fixed the bill, but the fact remains: management’s first instinct was to criminalize paying customers. That’s not just bad service—it’s reckless, dangerous, and insulting. If you’re a person of color, think twice before walking in here.

I cannot emphasize enough how great this place is! My bf and I went on a Monday night. It wasn’t busy. We were the second table in there. They first serve you with fresh cooked tortilla chips and salsa. The chips were still warm both times when we asked for seconds. We order house margaritas, one mango and the other, passion fruit. Both are also great. My boyfriend ordered steak fajitas and I ordered Baja steak tacos. We were both mind blown! The seasoning on the steaks are just TO DIE FOR! As much as we tried to continue savoring all that flavor, we were already so stuffed! As much as prices go, I think it is worth it! I totally recommend trying it out!!

I’ve already left one review back in February about a disturbing experience here, and I never thought I’d have to write another. But after what happened on March 30, I can’t stay silent.

In February, my fiancĂ© and I came in for dinner. The bartender pressured us—especially me—into taking a shot, even after we explained that I was recovering from heart surgery and on medication. I only went along with it to avoid a scene. It was reckless and completely out of line.

Still, I decided to give the place one more chance—because I used to love it.

On March 30, we came back. The place was empty—just my husband (a white man) and me (a Black woman). We sat at the bar, and the bartender this time was respectful and kind. But when I asked where the bathroom was and walked toward it, a blonde Hispanic (at the back of the bar near the bathroom)hostess loudly called out, “Excuse me, excuse me, the bathroom is for paying customers only.”

I was shocked. I turned around and said, “I am a paying customer.” My husband was stunned—he hadn’t been questioned or stopped. She didn’t apologize, didn’t say a word. Just turned away.

That’s two visits in a row where I’ve been made to feel targeted, disrespected, and unsafe—first being pushed to drink after a serious surgery, and now being racially profiled and humiliated in an empty restaurant.

My husband was ready to blow this up online, even pay to have articles written about the discrimination and disrespect. But I told him no—that I’d leave another review and give you the chance to make it right.

Because this place used to be a staple in the neighborhood—and it would be a shame to see it ruined under new management. But if this is how customers are treated now, especially Black women, then something has gone seriously wrong.

I truly hope this review prompts change. Because I—and many others—deserve better and otherr people may not be as kind...

Baja Mexican Grill in Hoboken offers a delightful dining experience that brings the vibrant flavors of Mexico to the heart of the city. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with a warm, inviting atmosphere—perfect for both casual outings and celebratory meals. The colorful dĂ©cor, featuring bright tiles and cozy seating, sets the stage for a fun, laid-back dining experience.

The menu at Baja is a standout, offering a variety of authentic Mexican dishes that go beyond the typical Tex-Mex fare. Whether you're a fan of tacos, burritos, or something more adventurous like their ceviche or grilled fish, there’s something for everyone. The tacos are particularly impressive, with options like the al pastor, carne asada, and grilled shrimp all receiving rave reviews for their bold, smoky flavors and fresh ingredients. The portion sizes are generous, and the balance of spice and flavor is spot on.

One of the highlights of Baja is the freshness of the ingredients. Everything, from the salsas to the tortillas, tastes incredibly fresh and made with care. The guacamole, always a crowd favorite, is rich and creamy, packed with perfectly ripe avocados and complemented by a touch of lime and cilantro.

In addition to the fantastic food, Baja also boasts an excellent selection of margaritas and craft cocktails, making it a great spot for happy hour or a night out with friends. The service is friendly and efficient, adding to the overall positive experience.

Whether you're a local or just visiting Hoboken, Baja Mexican Grill is a must-try for anyone craving bold, delicious, and authentic...

Arrived Tuesday April 29th 4.05pm - told manager hasn't shown up to work yet so they can't open. Said they'd be at least another 30 mins. So we went across the street to Happy Hour in Madison instead.

Decided to give it another try the following day (hoping manager will be professional that day and open at the stated time), we sit down outside, beside a Happy Hour sign "$6 Margs, $5 Beers". Order margs, food etc. An hour in to our meal the sign was taken away and 5 mins later put back with HAND WRITTEN words saying "at the bar" at the bottom. (At this stage our party had been served 10 margs). Of course check comes and $12 margs charged each. THIS SORT OF PRACTICE TELLS YOU ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS ESTABLISHMENT.

Manager originally tells staff to not honor the sign that was there when we sat, and to charge full price. We asked to speak to her (blonde lady), she eventually comes to table tells us no, "its assumed it's at the bar only" (yet half way through meal decided to write it on the sign......hmmmm). She said customers the previous day had issue with it too (why not change sign then?). Anyway finally honored the happy hour but experience ruined by then with having to argue our rights with a manager that has a bit on an attitude and rude to be frank, food decidedly average as well.

If you want a FAR superior Happy hour go to Madison Bar and Grill or City Bistro right beside this place. Given word of mouth in Hoboken, I'd give this place another 3 months...
