When it comes to local plate lunch places, one shouldn't expect much because they are what they are. Supposed to be greasy, filling, local style comfort food, but this place is mediocre at best. I regretted giving them a try, but I was hungry and it was there.
I ordered a local classic favorite, the Loco Moco. It is white Calrose style rice with 2 basic hamburger patties (the type you get in a bulk frozen pack) on top, brown gravy over it all and finally topped with 2 sunny side up eggs. If you aren't from Hawaii or have never tried it, you wouldn't understand how something it could be considered comfort food, but it is and perfect if you have a hang over. The dish sounds simple enough, but some how it just was horrible from top to bottom. Also, I assumed that my eggs would be sunny side up, but they came over medium which looses the addition of the runny egg in the dish.
Maybe it was just that day, but considering how simple of a dish it is I doubt it. I like to give places second chances, but I wont with this place. Only thing that was good was the lady who took my order was very pleasant...
Read moreOrdered the chicken katsu curry at this local/Chinese BBQ spot in Don Quijote’s outdoor food court. The chicken cutlets were thin with mostly fried breading. The curry was pretty good - wish there was more of it. Rice was overcooked and macaroni salad could be better. On the positive side, mini portion was large and prices very reasonable, but given the quality level, I couldn’t finish.
While I was waiting, a guy with two large Walmart bags was selling 40 cans of Spam “wholesale” to the owners for $70 - I guess this is how they manage to keep the prices down.
Would not repeat unless really hungry and in desperate need of cheap, freshly prepared food. I’m guessing there might be a few items on the vast menu that may be worth trying. Was thinking of Loco Moco, but the photos were unappetizing.
Maybe their breakfast specials are worth a try. For a comparable, L&L on Kamakee has much...
Read moreHad a really good Breakfast Special at AAA. My $ "value meter" may be impacting my Food score, but I was happy. Eggs where actually "over easy" with the yolks runny enough to mix in with the fried rice, bacon crispy..
As good as any other Hawaiian BBQ plate lunch place and it's right next door to my work.
Things that would have made it "awesome"? Fried rice was a little bland and could have been kicked up a notch (but that's what Sriracha is for) and I prefer my Spam...
