I recently had the pleasure of visiting Ala Moana Dental Care for a tooth extraction, a crown procedure, and a thorough cleaning, and I cannot express enough how impressed I am with the level of care and service provided by their amazing team.

From the moment I walked into their modern and inviting clinic, I was greeted warmly by the friendly reception staff. They efficiently handled all the necessary paperwork and made me feel comfortable right away. The waiting area was clean, comfortable, and had a calming atmosphere, which helped ease my nerves.

I came to ala moana dental care after a filling done by another dentist office had repeatedly fallen out. I was looking to move purely to get the correct treatment for a surface filling that apparently is prone to coming out due to the area it is in.

I came in three weeks ago for a teeth cleaning and x ray, after explaining to the staff why I was coming in and which tooth exactly was missing a filling. The dental hygienist who did the cleaning even saw it, identified it by sticking a tool into the cavity on my tooth and was the one who explained to me that it could be tricky.

After he finished the cleaning, Dr. Chen came in to do an examination, and from what I understood during that exam is that she saw it as well. She also reiterated to me the difficulty of that particular filling.

The following week I come into the office to get the filling fixed. Dr. Ryan, who performed the procedure, then tries to explain to me that the part of my tooth I was complaining about could simply be a "natural ridge" on my tooth, and that he didn't deem it necessary for me to get it filled in. This was after he had already worked in my mouth. So I asked him which tooth he did a filling on and he said a completely different tooth. This whole thing cost me $180 out of pocket.

After two days, the original tooth I had complained about was sore, and now also the other tooth he decided to fill in was sore as well. I called them and complained the following week, and asked to reschedule the appointment to get the correct tooth filled in. A third doctor entirely did it. I asked him many questions, he explained to me that ala moana dental care wouldn't do any work that was unnecessary, and asked if wanted to speak to the doctor who did the filling. I declined.

I asked her to explain everything to me thoroughly and she did, and she was forthright and gave me every piece of information I asked to. She explained to me why insurance wasn't going to cover a tooth that has a filling fall out within a year, which made sense. But then I asked her why I was charged for a tooth where I didn't even have a cavity getting a filling for the first time then and she explained that Dr. Chen charted THAT tooth, and not the one that had actually had a filling come out.

I’m writing to formally file a complaint regarding the repeated negligence, poor communication, and lack of professionalism I’ve experienced at Ala Moana Dental.

As someone with a very demanding schedule, I made considerable effort to coordinate my dental cleaning around my braces and work. This included arranging for my orthodontist to remove my wire, scheduling the cleaning, and then returning to have the wire replaced—all on the same day. I made multiple calls and confirmed my appointment well in advance. Despite that, when I arrived, I was informed that the appointment had never been scheduled. This careless mistake completely disrupted my day and showed an unacceptable lack of organization and respect for patients’ time.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. I also received a filling at your office that resulted in extreme pain and prolonged sensitivity. The pain was so severe that I was physically shaking afterward, and for months I could barely eat without discomfort. I had to seek treatment from four other dentists and even required numbing injections just to eat normally. Every one of those professionals independently warned me about the poor reputation of Ala Moana Dental, specifically regarding low-quality dental work.

It is also clear that there is a serious issue with staff turnover and lack of experience among your personnel. Nearly every visit, I’ve been seen by someone new, and the quality of care has been inconsistent at best. My first cleaning was poorly done, and while I gave the office another chance with a different hygienist who performed well, I later learned she no longer worked there. This revolving door of staff reflects poorly on the management and training standards of your practice.

I’ve now had three separate negative experiences, each worse than the last. What I once assumed would be a reputable office, based on its location and appearance, has proven to be the most unprofessional and unreliable dental provider I’ve ever encountered.
