This place deserve 1 star, and don't get me wrong, the food itself is top notch. It is the overall atmosphere is very Japanese and you can only feel the micro aggression IF you are East Asian culture influenced as well. The reservation is very confusing, because looks like whoever answering the phone does not speak good English. Fine this is Hawaii, if they don't speak English we asked a Japanese speaker friend made the reservation for us. Finding parking is a headache, because the area itself has limited parking space, we went to a paid garage and walked towards the restaurant. We were purposely seated with a wiggly chair that is under less attention from the Chef and you can tell they are judging us because of whatever reason we don't even know (maybe one of the friend that is going with us appears overweight? And this friend doesn't know that much about omakase style and is loud which is on us we should communicate). We asked to be seated further from the door and they refusee , and decided to put instagram leveled white couple in front of the chef, still giving us the bad seat, during the entire round we can tell the chef is avoiding eye contact and turning sideways. Sometimes we don't even know if he is too old so he can't pay attention to everyone that was seated or he really just refused to serve us. You know, they are Japanese they just 不安, instead of spending time to explain. So we spent an akward 1 hour feeling inferior to the white couples that were treated as customer. The food was good we were billed $100, which I think there are plenty of options available in Hawaii that can be around $50. So only go if you are good looking or if you speak Japanese and understand the...
Read moreOne of the best sushi I have had in Hawaii. We are sushi lovers so we have been trying to go try every good sushi restaurant in Hawaii. FYI, Master chef, Kinji-san, speaks little English and his wife is shy so you just have to break the ice and they will warm up to you. He is quite a character. The portion is more than generous and each piece of sushi is simple, yet has so distinct and amazing flavor. They only do Omakase so no menus, but you can ask what you like to have on your Omakase course. Also, no Sake menus. The reason behind that (which is clever) is he wants customers to see the actual bottles of Sake displayed right by the sushi counter and choose based on what you see and hear from the master chef by asking questions. He doesn't like when he orders sake and they bring it to you from behind the kitchen, not knowing how old (or maybe expired) the sake might be. Price is reasonable given how much we ate and drank. We felt we are too much cuz we wanted to try everything. It was about $610 for two with Sake before tips. What we had there would have been $900 + at other places we went. If we ate and drank moderately it would have been much cheaper. Def highly recommended. We have been to Hihimanu, Ginza Onodera and Sushi Sho (the place is a joke), and a fee others but Kin Chan is def...
Read moreThe worst meal at Honolulu for our one month stay. No price list for anything: Saki or food. So we went to the liquor store got a bottle of white wine. Ordering choice is everything ( appetizer, sashimi & sushi) or just sushi. I ordered the everything which is a big mistake. Sashimi is terrible: piled with a lot of raw slice onions on small pieces of tuna with some avocado/hot pepper. Appetizer is a small cold abalone with some vegetables. Nothing tasted good but they almost filled me up. Sushi were good. After 4 pieces, I was full. Told them to give me a uni sushi & a miso soup. Our bill was $260 for 2 people without liquor. They charged $15 for a small cup of tofu miso soup. $20 for one piece of Santa Barbara uni sushi. They are much more expensive than other sushi places in town. (Sushi Sasabune or Sushi Izakaya Gaku). Since there is no price list for anything, wondering if they overcharged us. Their sashimi & appetizers are terrible, sushi is good but everything is way overpriced. That is why this is the worst dining experience we had...
