Hunan Garden — Restaurant in Houghton

I would rate this place a zero, if I could. I never complain at restaurants, nor leave bad reviews. But we had a very bad experience at this restaurant. We ordered General Tso Chicken and almond boneless chicken. Neither of the dinner meals came with anything except one side of rice (which was on the small side for two meals). That's not the point. There were no vegetables served with either of the meals, just sliced almonds on top of the almond boneless chicken and some scallions on top. When I ordered I asked if there were any mushrooms in my dish and if so, to please leave them off. Our waitress said yes, she can do that. Never asked if I wanted another vegetable in place of the mushrooms.

Waitress didn't come back to check on us until we were almost finished eating. At that time, I brought up our concerns as the rice tastes old and not good. And neither of us received vegetables with our meal. Her excuse was I asked for no mushrooms and that's what came with my meal. For the other meal, she said no Chinese restaurants serve vegetables with the general tso's chicken. She said we cannot give you vegetables now at the end of your meal, you should have asked us when you ordered. Well shouldn't she ask us if we want vegetables or if I want to substitute my mushrooms for another vegetable, since she knows it doesn't come with vegetables? I don't know of a Chinese restaurant that doesn't serve vegetables with their entrees. This is the first one I have discovered. She didn't offer to give us new rice that was fresh, we didn't eat much of it. The almond boneless chicken had a dark brown sauce that looked a lot like the sauce that was on the general Tso's chicken. I told her I didn't like the sauce that was all over the chicken, and that usually almond boneless chicken comes with a light brown sauce. She said that all Chinese restaurants make their own, different sauces, we are not a franchise. Ok, so what I have learned from eating at this restaurant is, what you are used to getting at Chinese restaurants, do not expect at this one. I have eatin' at lots and lots of different Chinese restaurants in many different states and countries. I do believe this is the worst Chinese food meal I have ever tried to eat. Definitely not worth the $27.

We should have left when we Sat down and everything was filthy dirty. All the silverware at our table was dirty, the table was dirty, the plastic sign on the table was dirty, the decor needs updating, the carpet needs to be cleaned, and there were no lights on in the restaurant. They sat everyone by the window, so we could see from the daylight. When I asked for clean silverware, the waitress seemed mad. We just deal with things when we go to restaurants and do not like to say if we don't like things. But it was so bad here, that I decided to say something to the waitress, which she didn't try to help with anything. And thus why this review is here, to try and help others decide not to dine here. From reading some other reviews on this restaurant, it seems this restaurant is used to dealing with upset customers and make things up to try not to fix their poor quality of food. Neither of the meals were remotely good, and the restaurant was very dirty. We should have left and not ordered....

I went in there with my husband and our 10 month old daughter today. I ordered the garlic chicken and he ordered the sesame chicken. It came out just as quick as we ordered it. I took one bite and had to spit it back into my napkin. It was PURE chicken fat, So i thought maybe it was just a bad piece. I took another one, same thing. I let my husband try it (who eats ANYTHING) he couldnt eat it either, he had to spit it back out too. His chicken was okay. I called the lady over, who was the owner, and politely explained to her that it was inedible and i didnt like the texture of it. I asked if i could order something else. She seemed very reluctant and so i asked to see the menu again. She said to me " why order soemthing else you no like" i said okay you know what forget it. She puts my food in a to go box like im going to take it home with me. They literally tried to force me to eat this chicken fat. I told her she may as well throw it away because im not eating it now or ever. Then her husband/owner comes out of the back with my plate and starts YELLING AT ME in front of my daughter "WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THIS? I GET 20-30 PEOPLE IN HERE ORDER THIS EVERY WEEK NOONE SAYS WHAT YOU SAY " i calmly told him its not my fault i just dont like it he continues screaming at me "YOU PAY NOW" i said absolutely not will i pay for food of that quality no way. So the wife starts shouting shes calling 911, i told her to use my phone. After she calls the husband/owner continues screaming at me from across the restaurant saying im a "low quality customer" at this point im in TEARS. Finally the police show up. They come over to me and i explained everything to them. They were on my side(thank god) and told the asians that i dont have to pay for my chicken fat. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO DISRESPECTED BEEN TREATED SO POORLY HAD SOMEONE LET ALONE THE OWNER OF A RESTAURANT TREAT ME LIKE THAT TO THE POINT I WAS IN TEARS. I WILL NEVER AGAIN RETURN TO THIS RESTAURANT, AND I DONT ADVISE ANYBODY ELSE TO EITHER UNLESS THEY ARE LOOKING FOR 10$ COLD CHICKEN FAT AND A CRY FEST. WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY...

If I could give this a negative 10, I would. This restaurant baffles me to the point of confusion. WHY ANYONE would spend their hard earned money on this disgusting ‘food’, I’ll never know. We walked in and there was ONE other table eating. A round table right smack next to us, six person table were just gettting up to leave, as we sat down. That table stayed dirty when we walked out the door. The entire establishment is filthy. Not dirty, FILTHY. We should have turned and ran. Precursor as to what was to come with the so-called food they served. I cannot even express how tough and chewy the orange chicken was. Almost like they took it off another plate and Reheated it in the microwave. I have no clue what my husband’s dish was even, it just looked like a pile of garbage. Yes you may think that I am being crude but I promise you I’m a very positive person and I try to look at everything with a glass half full, but I was mad when we left.
