This was the starting point for an epic 9 day backpacking trek across Isle Royale. The visitor center is not much, but it is the location of the Ranger III, the vessel that crosses Lake Superior to Isle Royale. The park rangers on the Ranger III were outstanding. During the six hour ride to the island, the rangers provide an overview of the rules and issue permits. They will answer any questions you have. My guess is that the visitor center does not see many visitors, except for days that the Ranger departs or arrives. The VC stocks the standard shirts, maps, books, and other souvenirs.

As you know I am a big fan of National Park Service and visit as many sites as I can. Cars aren't allowed on the island and there is a ferry to take you to the island. I was more interested in learning about the place instead of going there. There is a short video to watch.

Great place to get information regarding a journey to Isle Royale National Park. The staff was friendly and informative, and there were plenty of wares to commemorate your adventures, be it a trip to the island or a drive to Houghton. This is a must-stop.

I was extremely disappointed with the ranger I spoke to in the phone. I am on vacation from SC and called to verify closing hours, since I had seen 4pm, 5pm, and closed all day. I informed the ranger I was on the way to the VC, but wouldn’t make it before they closed. When I asked if they had a passport stamp outside for when they are not open (Voyageurs NP did) they rudely told me no. When I asked if there was any way I could get a passport stamp, he rudely told me NO. I asked if he could leave one outside somewhere, he told me they don’t hold up in the rain-like I didn’t know that!! He wouldn’t leave it in a brochure box or anything. He proceeded to tell me there was no way for me to get a stamp. And they would be open again Monday @ 8am. They are closed on the weekend-and I’m going to be long gone by Monday!! I have never asked a VC to do anything with getting a passport stamp after hours, but have heard great things by those who have—getting theirs left in a spot to pick up, or even the rangers sending it in the mail!!! I have never been so deterred from NPS visiting, passport collecting, or supporting—such a terrible...

Well thought out Visitor Center with plenty of parking for us since the Ranger III was not yet running. Not sure how it would be when it is. Interesting video and some nice information. Rangers on duty were informative and well versed in the Park and talked about the area and the park. We did not go to the actual park since it was early in the season and snowing. But they gave us options if we did want to...
