First time coming to this establishment and it very well will be my last. Based off of the reviews, my boyfriend and I had high hopes for this Chinese food. Walking inside the decor is very dated and doesn’t give the impression of cleanliness. Yet, (again) we decided to give them a fair chance. We got the cheese puffs as an appetizer. I ordered the lemon chicken with shrimp fried rice and my boyfriend got the hot fried shrimp with crawfish fried rice (ALL OF WHICH ARE POPULAR ITEMS). Everything was horrible aside from the cheese puffs. Lemon chicken was bland, mushy (advertised as lightly fried), and swimming in an offensively strong sauce. Shrimp fried rice was also bland. The hot shrimp tasted like it had been fried in old grease and the sauce was not good either. We thought the crawfish fried rice was going to be the saving Grace for this place, but after a few bites we got a taste of some crawfish that had a ROTTEN flavor! We basically paid $70 for food that was barely edible (and I use the term edible VERY loosely). Also waiters were not the friendliest. Asked the waiter several times for their assistance and even politely said “excuse me” across the restaurant and he continued to walk past me. I had initially wanted to speak to the manager about the service and experience, but given how the waiters were acting, I didn’t feel the need to give this establishment any more of my time or energy. Money was wasted, but we’ve decided to cut our losses and simply not return. My advice: JUST GO TO PANDA, don’t pay for food poisoning. This place NEEDS to be closed.

**Response to the owner: As I previously stated I tried to speak with someone regarding the food and was ignored. As for the lemon chicken, the chicken itself was mushy and bland. Meat should...

I been going to China Garden for years and never been disappointed. Last Wednesday (4/7) I took a friend there for dinner it was horrible. The restaurant was kinda empty so I don't why the food and the service was so bad. The restaurant has gone down since Momma died about month or two ago. Her children were kinda of quite. The waitress who walks like she has something wrong with her feet waited on myself and my friend. She was very rude. We ordered the biscuits the first order was cold. The female owner came by our table to check on us. I told her about the biscuits being cold. She brought us some hot ones out. We ordered our dinner entrees. My friend ordered fried catfish with shrimp fried rice. I ordered spicy chicken with shrimp fried rice without green onions. The food came out from the kitchen wrong the shrimp fried rice was wrong. Mines had green onions and friend didn't. The waitress had the nerve to tell us to switch rice from one plate to another. I told her no. To take it back and correct it. The waitress was angry with me. I was upset because I didn't know what she would do to our food in the kitchen. My friend ask her for some ranch salad dressing instead of Tatar sauce for catfish. She informed us they do have any. I really didn't believe her because they sell salads. Please excuse my long review. The soda waters were flat also. I 'm so sad the wonderful restaurant is going down since the matriarch has gone on to meet our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I hope they get together. They already had to cut their business hour's down due to Covid. I hate to see this business close. Again sorry for this...

We had such a great experience at China Garden after the Astros game on 04/10/21. The egg rolls, wings and the special fired rice were as good as ever. The entrees we had were my favorite, the grilled tilapia, chicken with vegetables, and the legendary lemon chicken. All were amazing. But I am writing this review not so much about the great food but because the family that owns China Garden are very nice people and I don't know if they may be too polite to respond appropriately to the rude and mean spirited, recent review by Karen Roberts but I will. Ms. Roberts, if you really been going to China Garden for "years," you would know that: they have never, ever served salads. Check the menu if you don't believe that! Mama's son, Richard, and his wife, Nancy, have been taking care of the back end for years and they are still there. Nothing has changed in the kitchen! the female owner that you mention is Carol, Mama's daughter, and has been running the front end for years. Nothing has changed there either. your waitress, Mindy, is still as contrary and inappropriate as ever. Nothing has changed there either. You had a bad meal/experience at a restaurant, I get it. We all have been disappointed sometimes when we eat out but your need to point out someone's physical disability when it has nothing to do with your meal is mean spirited and, certainly, uncalled for. Furthermore, to include the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the passing of Mama in your review is beyond the pale. Please don't go back to the restaurant even if Carol offers to comp you a meal. They don't need...

2022: As soon as I saw the yung chou chow mein, I dragged my family here. Our food plans fit right in with our visit to downtown Houston. See, my parents’ friends used to make this dish in my little hometown, but since they’ve retired, no one has filled this hole until China Garden. We had lemon chicken, yung Chou chow mein, wonton soup, mixed vegetables, HUGE and delicious egg rolls, and the ice cream pie for dessert! Oh they threw in some wonderful hush puppies as well. I wish I had extra stomachs. My family and I were in LOVE!! For those reviewers griping about this isn’t authentic, you must not have grown up true Cantonese. What you’ve been eating is no longer whole Cantonese fare at other restaurants, even in Chinatown (yes, SF included). Most Asian restaurants serving dim sum and other dishes are mixed now with a Taiwanese or other Asian flair. So don’t knock this place. We met the owners. Carol is so nice and easy to talk to. Gwen on the staff is fantastic. Their parents created a beautiful legacy that this family is continuing. Check it out. You won’t be disappointed!! 2023: We returned late July. Carol recognized us as soon as we walked in the door!! We had the delicious egg rolls again as well as their famous lemon chicken, Yung Chow chow mein, and more! This time we added to our connections when we talked even more with the family, Cameron and Richard. All owners of the restaurant and absolutely fantastic! They’re such a sweet family, which makes the visit a delight and complete. Get to know them. You won’t be disappointed at all.

I'm still on the hunt for the best Curry Chicken inside the Loop, one that rivals Wong's in League City, so after seeing the great reviews at China Garden, I decided to give it a go. This place looks as though it has not been updated since the oil crisis of the 80' and I could not quite place my finger on what the decor was trying to be. That aside, we were seated immediately and there were quite a few people there because the Rockets were playing that night so everyone was eating before the game. We started with the egg rolls and the cheese puffs. The egg roll was super yum and full of goodness. The cheese puffs were good but I found the wonton wrappers were way too large for the typical serving of cheese. That aside, they did taste good! For my entree, as I noted above, I ordered the Curry Chicken. While it was good, it just wasn't on point with what I am use to. Nonetheless, I would eat there again if I had to. Husband ordered the Moo Goo Gai Pan and he said it was just ok. The sauce was too brown (normally it's white). We had the misfortune that our waiter did not give us any fortune cookies, yet other servers gave them to their tables. I guess no biggie, those cookies generally taste like cardboard anyway. LOL.

Having spent 10 days in Houston having amazing food, as Asians we still end up with some cravings for Chinese food. We Googled and found China Garden restaurant which is about 10 min walk from our hotel. No regrets! It has a homely feel and while I thought most food in US is slightly on the salty side (i dont take a lot og sodium and thus most falvorful food may be a little salty for me) but the dishes here are well balanced for me, not too salty for me and I tried a dish which children and non Chinese usually like...sweet and sour pork. It is one of the best sweet and sour pork o ever had....even surpassing the ones in my home country. Being greedy, I ordered an extra portion (a cup...for indivudual portion) of wanton dumpling soup. It.was so good. Generous portion of meat in the dumpling. The huge egg roll (looks like a gigantic spring roll) was yums too! I just wished I found this earlier so I could go back for more dishes before I left Houston. Thank you for the hospitality! For locals, pls do visit. It's amazing , one of the best and authentic dishes you will get. For those like me...missing home and craving for Chinese food, this place can be a second home 😂 Ohhh we got some hush puppies for dessert too!
