Awful dining experience for food that's only ok; can't recommend.
I won't argue that it's authentic, but I've had far better Cuban elsewhere for less hassle. I went pretty early in the day, and there were only a few people here when I went, so I thought I'd get decent service. The waiter's english was so bad he completely messed up my order. When he brought out the food he sat it down then immediately left before checking to see that everything was right. Some minutes later when I was finally able to flag him down, I told him how the order was wrong and he kept repeating the same thing in broken english--obviously confused as to what I was saying. After a few minutes of this, he took my plate, came back some time later, and the order was only half right. He did profusely appologise for getting it wrong in the first place. The cubano wasn't even that good, it was just ok. For $6, that wasn't much of a sandwich. Frustrated as I was, I tried to order dessert; he took my order like they had what I wanted, then 6 minutes later another waiter tells me they're out of dessert. I guess they can't help being out of things, though you could at least tell customers 'hey, we might be out of this, let me go...
Read moreOne of the few and first Cuban restaurants here in Houston Texas. I've been eating at Cuban restaurants here in Houston since 1998. El Rey taquerias, down to a couple Cuban restaurants on bissonnet and rampart, I came to this restaurant when it first opened and never got a chance to give it a review. I went ahead and got the ropa vieja plate a very traditional Cuban plate. Although the decorations on the wall and the restaurant itself give you a great feeling of the Cuban tradition. The service and the food don't match it. You will feel as if you are not welcomed but I know that it's not it probably perhaps they lack the hospitality that Americans expect. When they go to an establishment. I will say that when I first received my meal no one came to ask me if I needed anything which I did. The rice and beans were great so would the plantains but the meat on the ropa vieja was very bland and dry. I know it's a dry plate but there's herbs that make it flavorful and it was lacking glavor
Do not be discouraged. Come try. I recommend it because it is one of the first generation wave of Cubans that have came Houston. So for that I recommend come try it and when you leave you leave with...
Read moreI have been to this restaurant many many times! It’s very close to my home… lucky me! My go to is the Media Noche with chicharritas, croquetas de jamón, empanadas, yuca con mojo, plátanos maduros fritos, arroz moro, and licuado de mamey. I’m sure I’ve tried more menu items but that’s my usual. I’ve done dine-in, take out and delivery and service has always been excellent. Food is always delicious and flavorful. Out of all my visits, my only complaint is that the meat in the sandwiches is a hit or miss… there are times that it’s juicy and there are times that it’s too dry. But that’s when the garlicky sauce they include comes into the rescue, so still 5 stars from me! The prices are also very affordable and they do not skimp out on portions.
I am Mexican-American… in Mexico, licuado de mamey is a very popular drink that is very common in cities like Mexico City. Y’all… you need to try the licuado, please! It’s a tropical fruit that is buttery, almond-y, pudding-like, sweet potato-ish, orangey and very creamy! Mix that with some milk and ice, and you’ve got a delicious licuado.
I’ve recommended this place to a couple of my friends and family, and they keep coming back....
