Sushi Masa Houston – A Must-Visit New Spot in Houston

The dining experience at Sushi Masa felt far more like traditional Japanese hospitality than a typical all-you-can-eat buffet. Each menu item is made to order, ensuring every dish is fresh and thoughtfully prepared. The service was exceptional—Tommy was patient, kind, and happy to explain any dish I wasn’t familiar with. With experience helping to open six Sushi Masa locations, his expertise and attentiveness truly enhanced the meal. Thank you, Tommy! The Tuna Tataki was beautifully presented and delicately prepared. The sear on the tuna was perfect—lightly crisped on the edges while keeping the center tender and flavorful. The citrus and soy dressing complemented the fish’s freshness perfectly, reflecting the care taken in both preparation and plating. The Pepper Tuna was another standout. Nicely seared and fresh, it had just the right amount of peppery kick without overpowering the tuna. The clean presentation and satisfying portion made it a very enjoyable dish. The Shrimp Tempura was light, crisp, and beautifully golden. The batter offered a nice crunch without being heavy or greasy, and the shrimp inside were tender and fresh. The Unagi was tender, flavorful, and perfectly glazed. The sweet-and-savory balance enhanced the eel’s rich texture without overwhelming it, and the elegant presentation made it a pleasure to enjoy. The Tuna Toro was a true highlight. The cut was clean, fresh, and beautifully presented. Its texture was rich and buttery, just as Toro should be, while the flavor remained delicate and balanced—simply exquisite. The Shaggy Roll was a delightful treat—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The combination of ingredients worked harmoniously, making each bite satisfying without being overwhelming. A must-try for anyone seeking a creative and tasty roll. The Philadelphia Roll with Tuna was excellent. The tender tuna complemented the creamy avocado and smooth cream cheese perfectly. Each bite was flavorful and well-balanced, delivering a truly satisfying sushi experience. Finally, the Baby Tiger Roll was absolutely delightful. Fresh ingredients and balanced flavors made every bite enjoyable, and the thoughtful presentation added to the overall experience. A wonderfully satisfying roll for any sushi lover. Overall, Sushi Masa offers a memorable, high-quality sushi experience with fresh ingredients, artful presentation, and attentive service.

Service is very slow, so order alot. While server is nice, it's absurd it took uncomfortably long for some of the items to come out and for them to come back around. Atmosphere is just bar atmosphere. I would recommended to order 225 roll and lychee alcohol. Eel - it's not horrible but it's ok. Katsu - chicken cutlet also ok Tonkotsu is about 1/3 size it's very solid. Quality is ok the individual ingredients like egg (basically hard boil egg) and chaschu (no char) brings it down very hard since they weren't good. Shaggy dog is very bad, get 225 roll as that is just the shaggy dog. ChickenFried rice ok but the rice is very bland and slightly too wet and no fragrance at all. (Egg was good though) Combination Noodle very soggy but flavor good, shrimp taste like shrimp. Steak Teriyaki slight to sweet like bbq sauce, not too bad. Steak alright. Fish katsu is worse then frozen fish sticks Cheese cake bread crumbs is phenomenal, the actual cheese is lacking and is worse then store bought. Tamago is also ok Smoked salmon is ok Edamame was horrible, literally ate it and almost vomited. Rainbow roll is good Yellow tail is good White tuna is good Salmon is good Lychee alcohol is crazy good Everything is just ok, and I'm ok with that. I treat it like a buffet so the quality wasn't that off-putting. Would never go again though since the quality isn't there. Probably the worst ayce I've been too due to just ok quality and very poor service. 3.5/5 stars tbh but 5/5 no drama. The bill was about $119 for 3 people, tip to a clean $140.

I eat a ton of sushi and have been to more AYCE sushi spots than I can even count, so I really thought I knew what to expect going into Sushi Masa. Right from the moment we sat down, Bree was an absolute superstar — genuinely one of the most kind, welcoming, and attentive servers I’ve ever had. She was quick with refills, checked on us regularly without ever feeling intrusive, and always had this warm, friendly energy that put us at ease. Bree remembered our orders without missing a beat, gave helpful recommendations, and honestly made us feel like we were her most important customers. If I could rate her alone, it would easily be 10/10, and I’d come back just to have her serve me again.

That’s why it’s such a shame that my experience was ultimately ruined by Mike Chen, the manager. After ordering seared salmon nigiri — something that should obviously be included at an all-you-can-eat restaurant — Mike decided to march up and inform us that it would be an extra $1 per piece with absolutely no exceptions. The way he did it was so abrupt and impersonal, like he couldn’t wait to squeeze every last penny out of the table. I’ve never seen a manager at any other AYCE sushi place be so aggressive and stingy over something so small. It’s the kind of nickel-and-dime mentality that completely cheapens the entire experience. Honestly, if this is how they want to treat paying customers who just want to enjoy their meal, they’re going to lose a lot of business.

It’s especially frustrating because Bree clearly understands what great service is — she made us feel welcome, appreciated, and well taken care of the entire time — and then Mike had to come along and undo all of that goodwill with one greedy, unnecessary policy. It’s ridiculous that a restaurant that touts itself as AYCE would try to slap on hidden charges like that for something as basic as seared salmon nigiri. I’ve never encountered this at any other AYCE sushi restaurant, and it left a terrible taste in my mouth.

If it weren’t for Bree’s exceptional service, my review would have been even harsher — she is the only reason I’d even consider coming back. Mike, on the other hand, has guaranteed I’ll be telling all my friends and family to avoid this place like the plague. Save your money and your patience, and spend it somewhere that actually respects...
