Read moreSadly disappointing. I'm getting a bit tired of Torchy's largely unchanging menu when looking to scratch that taco itch, so I was originally happy to see Velvet Taco opening. Unfortunately, they didn't meet expectations. The chips were so oversalted that the coconut curry queso (which sounded interesting) was essentially overpowered--you could barely taste anything at all (and I LOVE salt, so if I'm saying they're oversalted, then most cows in dire need of a salt-lick would avoid these chips). I tried 2 of the tacos (the green chile pork and the chicken tikka). Both were substantially rice, and largely flavorless. Not worth the calories, if we're being candid. The final nail in the coffin for me, is that they decided to go with almost all high-top tables, and that there are only 4 normal sized tables in the air conditioned area (hello, Houston weather?!?). I don't like my legs and butt going numb on high chairs and stools. Which, let's discuss that for a moment--pick a syle. They have like 5 or 6 different types of stools, chairs, etc. All uncomfortable. WHY?!? This place tried to go all style, and forgot any substance. It's the food that will bring people back, not an attempt at edgy decor. Sadly, they failed...
Read moreIn my Wyclef Jean's voice, "Someone please call 9-1-1!" It should be a crime to make tacos this delicious and take a trip around the world! Who does that? VELVET TACOS!!! Just like that! OMG!!!
Let me tell you about this place. Check on the photo of the tacos. 4 tacos but one is missing (that's a whole nother story) photo, #1 Buffalo Chicken, #3 Spicy Tikka Chicken, #14.5 Sweet Chile Shrimp and #17 Mexi-Cali Shrimp as well as the Queso Blanco. Since our friends suggested this place, we gave it a try and we weren't disappointed! The hubby devoured or should I say inhaled his tacos (that's why one is missing)! The Spicy Tikka Chicken taco had me reminiscing about my favorite authentic Indian restaurant. All the flavors of India paired with basmati rice was a genius move! Then, taking a bite of the Sweet Chile Shrimp taco was FLAVOR TOWN amazing with an Asian twist! Panko fried shrimp, kimchee slaw and sriracha aioli were a hit!!! Okay, so my husband came up for air and he loved every bite.
Ooopsie! Let me not forget the Queso Blanco served with Blue Corn Tortilla Chips because we practically DRANK the cup of queso. Yes, that good! Bye!!!
P.S. They have Vegan options...
