$54 dollars for 12 oz of black coffee.
People visiting this shop should be warned that a typical 12 ounce cup of black coffee will run between $54 and $24 dollars. Typical coffee shop servings are 12 oz for a small. This place gives you 4 ounces. The size is not listed on the menu. The 4 ounces will cost between $8 and $18 dollars; to get a standard 12 oz cup, one will need to spend between $24 and $54 dollars.
This coffee tastes good! It is also $8-$18 (yep) for 1/3 serving of black coffee, which for environmental reasons they put into a random glass jar to serve That glass jar could be any size.
Mine was 4 ounces, or 1/3rd of a typical 'small.' For $8. Picture shows how full my mug was once I decanted it from the jar.
ETA: By the response of the owner, they seem to think I was surprised by the price. I was not. The price is clearly listed. They also claim the amounts they will serve you are clearly listed. This is a false claim, see image of menu posted with this review.
The lattes are listed at 12 oz. The pour overs are not given a size. One may assume the size will be 12 oz, as that is a very standard size for a small cup of coffee. One would be wrong--a black coffee is 1/3rd the size of a latte--4 ounces--while being more expensive.
See second image: Latte sizes? Listed. Black coffee? You get to guess! Surprise! it's 1/3rd of a typical 'small.'
From the owner: "Our prices represent the hard work from coffee producers, coffee roasters, and the dedicated baristas who made your drink. "
It's weird that every other small coffee shop in Indy specializing in single origin, small batch coffees supporting hard work coffee producers and roasters manage to make a cup of coffee that is more than 4 ounces. Stop with...
Read moreI LOVE coffee. Seriously - I’ve ordered exclusively from micro roasters for the past 12 years, have all the gadgets and preparation devices, and spend probably $2k+ per year on coffee.
But this is a bridge too far.
I stopped in on a break from a work trip expecting to get a takeout cup of coffee to go back to work. I picked a single-origin brew for $8. A little expensive, but fine. I was then rung up for $9 and told they don’t have any paper cups, and instead charge a dollar for a reusable or returnable glass jar. I’m from out of town and walking through; I’m unlikely to come back here. I almost canceled the order but then thought ‘Hey, sometimes you gotta suffer for great coffee!’
The pour over process was appropriate. And then I was handed a glass jar HALF full of coffee. Upon expressing my surprise, I was informed it was a 220g pour. That’s just under 8oz. It was more than $1/oz. One block later I had finished my thimble of coffee and dropped the container in the nicely placed recycling containers around the city. Absolutely absurd.
This place gets 2 stars instead of 1 because the coffee was good (but not phenomenal), and I wasn’t prompted for a tip on checkout like every...
Read moreTL;DR, Amberson is an Indy specialty coffee essential. If you love high-quality specialty coffee, this is your spot.
Hands down, one of the best specialty shops in the city. Not only is the shop itself charming, but their coffee (bean) offerings are always varied, eclectic, and delicious. Be willing to take time out of your day when you go to Amberson - not because they're slow or anything, but because the coffee they serve deserves your attention. Not to mention the palpable passion the baristas have for their craft (they're really nice peeps, too, always friendly and engaging).
A couple weeks ago, I went in to try a bean I'd been excited about for a while (Wush Wush from Proud Mary, if you care). While I was waiting for it, the barista came outside and told me they weren't very satisfied with how the brew turned out, and asked if it was okay if they took a few minutes to remake it for me.
That's a level of quality service, passion, and dedication that - in my experience - you really don't get from many other spots around town. I just wish I knew the barista's name, because damn, they deserve high praise for that cup.
If you haven't figured it out by now, I really can't recommend this...
